Analysis of Sightstone(s) cost vs benefit. (Shut up about SS wasting inventory space)

TL;DR sight stones are massively gold efficient for supports

What's their cost and stats?

item 2049-800G -150 hp -3 wards each time you back 50% gold efficiency without counting unique passive. 400g value Counting unique passive, assuming that wards are 75g(the price before they were removed), all you need is to place 6 wards before it starts being positively cost efficient.

item 2303 -2200G -500hp -200% hp regeneration -spoils of war -4 wards each time you back 87.88% gold efficiency without the passives. 1933.33g value In order to compensate for the remaining 266.67 gold you would need to wait 22 minutes and 14 seconds, place 4 wards, or kill approximately 11 melee minions.

item 2302 -1900 -200hp -100%base hp regen -100%base mana regen -10% CDR -favor passive -4 wards each time you back 84.21% gold efficiency without the passives. 1600g value In order to make up the extra 300 g, you would need to place 4 wards, get the gold from 60 minion deaths, or (counting for the fact that one minion deaths heals you for as much as 26.67g of health potions) only 10 minion deaths.

item 2301 -2200g -25 ap -200 hp -100% base mana regen -10% CDR -tribute passive -4 wards each time you back 83.81% gold efficiency without the poassives. 1843.75g value In order to make up the extra 356.25 g you would need to place 5 wards, wait just under 30 minutes, or proc tribute 24 times.

item 2045 -1600 gold -500hp -4 wards each time you back 83.33% gold efficient. 1333.33 g value in order to make up the extra 266.67 g you would need to place 4 wards.

These items are not gold inefficient unless you go out of your way to not use the passive. They can technically be infinitely valuable in a game but more realistically they can be around 200-300% gold efficient if you place enough wards and use the passives effectively. The gold generation passives can pay for over half of the item just by themselves. I greatly stress this next point.

Sight stones are not built in other roles in the game because the majority of their use comes from the gold gen passive along with the wards. The different passives are useless if you are the one last hitting CS.(With the exception of ruby sight stone being kinda worthless in comparison to other SS items.) Technically you can build a support item to get the warding done yourself. The barriers to this are that you waste an item slot on the incredibly low stat item 2049 or waste a gold gen passive on nothing. Most people just cross their fingers and hope the support is competent enough to cover vision by them self.

They are not a loss of inventory space in a sense that it is not gold efficient as an item

It loses inventory space in a sense that every support is forced to buy it because it's so mandatory and if they don't no one else will and thus they lose build flexibility and their spells are less impactful because sightstone gives mediocre stats.

No you.

It wasting an inventory slot is a very valid complaint.

If you could explain how they completely waste an item slot even when they provide invaluable support to a team, i'd greatly appreciate it.

Because aside from the active, it is a really reaaaaaally terrible item? A terrible mandatory item no less.

Especially if you, like myself, prefer item 3401.

So the item is a waste because, if you ignore the purpose of the item and only look at bonus stats from it, its terrible.

Yes, as an item it is terrible. Especially considering the mandatory nature of it.

Why should Warding be the only active in the game where you have to sacrifice good stats for the active? You have things like item 3512 item 3107 which also offers unique utility through an active, yet it is allowed to have stats that make it worth picking up. These items are desirable both for it's active and it's stats.

Why is vision supposed to be so uniquely punishing? The thing is, I don't think it is. meant to be that way Riot have shown a desire to improve upon it with the Eye-line of Support/Ward hybrid items. They just seemingly forgot about the baseline Sightstones in the process.

If you wanna go fully upgrade your Support item rather than Hybridize, you're screwed.

Probably to stop it from being built on other champs because, like I said, it is a support item. And supports dont need stats because they generally have good base stats and are useful with their utility, not their stats.

Sightstone should not be a support item if vision is a "team game". It should be good enough to be an every role item (it sort of is a jungle one now) or not be an item at all.

See if you read my post you would notice that support items will pay for themselves. Oh right it's just the "active" of the item, not anything important" Sure it's an item based upon placing wards, but let's just ignore that it places wards and only look at the base stats because that's what smart people do

See if you read my post, too... [zombie-brand-clap]

I suggest you go back and so so and try and answer the question I posed.

It is not a Support item. In no way is it restricted to Supports only. The only class-specific items in the game are Jungler items.

Speaking of which, here's item 3711 to crap all over your "Support only item"-argument, LOL.

It builds into support items only, supports are the only champs that regularly buy it... its a support item m8

I will keep posting this 'til you get it, mate.

Thats like saying Zhonyas isnt an item for AP champs because anyone can buy it or Tear isnt an item for champs with mana because Gnar and Riven can buy them too...

Sightstone cost and support item upgrades seem to be an issue I see in many posts lately. I am hoping they remove sightstone from the game and instead make make the second tier of the support item to include 3 ward charges, then subsequently the third tier of the support items to include 4 ward charges. So basically item 3401 item 3069 item 3092 would all be able to carry ward charges.

The only issue is that these items already have active abilities and I am not sure if Riot would want to have an item with 2 actives which would require 2 key bindings to a single item. You would also need to do something similar to how jungle items are only purchasable by people bringing smite, making it more or less a jungle exclusive item with support items. Something along the lines of only people who are in the support position in champ select can purchase to prevent it being used in mid lane like the old frost queens.

just a thought

It is slot inefficient and the role that takes is pressured to take it is the one most pressured to take control wards as well.

It is nice that they provide survivability And sustain And income And vision, but it would be nice if there were options with some sort of throughput stat. Be it AD, (noticeable) AP, AS, Bonus healing or something.

The major problem of the items is that they are skewed to provide utility for utility classes and ... not much for others, whereas if the stones either did not exist or had stat options useful to all roles then supports would finally have equal vision responsibility with other players on the team.

I don't think anybody is claiming it's not efficient for what it does, or at least anyone thinking critically here.

There's a reason why we buy it, after all.

It's just not a very interesting item.
