How exactly does matchmaking in normals work???

I'm like permanently outclassed by absolutely everyone at all times. Every game I get matched with or against anything above Silver 1 (average is Gold, and I've been up to against Diamonds before) whereas I've been permanently unranked for years. Shouldn't I be matched with and against other players who are either unranked or at least Bronze? I can't help but always feel like the weakest link who's unable to do anything just because I get matched with and against people way above my level.

Normal MMR and Ranked MMR are two diffirent things so someone can be challenger but have normal silver MMR.
