Aatrox broad build worries me

So he was originally a bit more slender and looked like he had some artistry behind his fighting style (as described in his original lore) even though he was given kinda the same style as tryndamere. I was hoping he'd keep that same look but that this time they would actually deliver on that swordsman stylistic fantasy. I'm already afraid they opted for just another muscle-bound brute like DrMundo Darius Garen Galio Gangplank Hecarim Sion Olaf Volibear Trundle Udyr Renekton Garen

So, I'm not going to jump the gun too much here. I could be completely wrong but I'd be pretty sad if it were true. So many cool, interesting fighters that apply some bit of elegance and style in the way they fight yet they're all female (or Ionian, but cant play Yasuo because then I'd be a terrorist). Was hoping they could break away from that trend but looks like they might not be capable. Male fighters are just big dumb brutes who swing big thing and hurt good. If he's just another Renekton (which it looks like he may be) I'll have pretty much no real reason to play this game anymore lol. I mean never say never but I'll be pretty okay with not playing it.

P.S. Actually I'm already a bit sad they scraped his original build aesthetic. There are so few male (non Ionian) fighters that had that. Shame.

I'm pretty sure this goes in "Story, Art, & Sound" or somewhere similar.

Not really. It ties into his gameplay or at what least his suspected/suggested gameplay may or may not be.

But what you're suggesting is a change in his overall style, which is about his lore/art. I don't believe you're thinking of changing his actual abilities in terms of balance.

Gameplay isn't only about balance though, which is probably why they removed the word "balance" from "Gameplay & Balance" some time ago. Gameplay is just about the game in general, play-wise. You can talk about turrets here because turrets affect gameplay.

As far as what I'm talking about, if I said "I don't like the way he looks. You should change it." Then I could see your point but I am specifically talking about his aesthetic and how it relates to or may relate to his in-game mechanics and playstyle.

When the devs make champions, they are concious of how the champion will look when making their kit because it delivers a sense of realism/believability. Just like almost every female in the game hops around and is super fast and all that because most of the devs make a correlation between the two. Look at Nautilus for example: why doesn't he flash around and do backflips? Probably because the overall feel of the champ is consistent from his visual appearance to his gameplay and vice-versa as a slow, big-hitting tank.

So... Do you want to change his look or his abilities?

I'm pretty sure they're reworking him anyways.

Can't change his looks now and I don't know his abilities. Im speculating. I'm not saying for sure he's going to be a big dumb brute, but thats the initial vibe I get from the cinematic.

I'm pretty sure they're reworking him anyways.

What gave that away?

Rhaast ? Jax ? Yi ? Pantheon to some extend ? etc.

Well, Rhaast is actually fairly big (bigger than original Aatrox). Kayn is somewhat slender and guess what: He's Ionian. Path, sure. Panth is one of the few I mentioned. I also think panth is Ionian. Jax is also Ionian and his playstyle isn't elegant at all. He's an auto attacker like trynd, trundle and everyone else.

The only real champions who have intricate kits with a sword is Yasuo Fiora Riven. No, I dont include Yi because he's pretty much just another auto attacker. Still, thats two females and one Ionian. Aatrox was the only who who had a chance at being in that group but now (probably because he's not Ionian) he's joined the ranks of the plethora of globs of muscle.

Again, I could be wrong in terms of his kit. He could be very dynamic and have some interesting mechanics but I'm just not getting that vibe at all. I have a feeling he's going to either be even more of an auto attacker now or just be another Renekton, some mobility with mostly on-hit effects and a super steroid ult. Whats funny is, I like renekton but he's just been like a step-up from garen in terms of mechanics. They really cant get past that as a melee, male, non-ionian fighter.

Wake up dude,Jax is icathian and he was in recent icathia lore (Saijax). Also have u seen Jax in new dawn cinematic ? He is outdated thats it,but this is his thing(hell Jax and Fiora even considered best duelists on runeterra or smth and rivals).Panth is from mount targon and he is also outdated, but he is meant to be that elegant, skilled warrior.

Ok, but my point still stands. Why, if there are so few already, would they move Aatrox from the elegant fighter towards the other generic, muscle stacked juggernauts when not only do we have a kajillion of them already, but lack those types of kits even in the "elegant" male fighters we already have (due to them being outdated)?

Basically, from what you're saying there's even more reason for them to have kept Aatrox as an elegant fighter since there are so few of them and the ones who are don't even convey that style because they are outdated.

I'm also mostly concerned with this in terms of gameplay, not cinematics. I mean I could play a stick figure who did one attack all the time and imagine in my head what the character cinematically looks like all I want. That's not conveying it in-game at all. That's just imagination.

You have to remember that the character types come from a more midevele era (demacians and noxians) with a little bit of a later century where they have early technology. So besides assassin, the close combat fighters are going to be more burly. Jayce is one of the exceptions but he’s from the city of progress so he has his hammer as a tool. And since Aatrox is the Darkin warlord I think that’s why they want him to seem tougher than Rhaast.

See, I don't agree with that at all. Riven isn't burly and she's an awesome swordsman. Why's the male have to have piled on muscle to use a sword? Your logic doesn't stand. Then there's fiora, yi, and yasuo who all use swords. I don't belive that just because you're not female or Ionian, if you're a male fighter you also require extreme muscle mass.

Actually my logic does stand. Yasuo and yi are swift swordsmen who excel in precision over brute force. Hence why they are smaller. They come from a land that is more Asian like so the blade weilders arent burly men.

Garen excels in brute force which is why he has the big blade. Darius same. Aatrox is THE Darkin warlord. It’s coming from an era where physical strength holds a little more than anything else. So because of this they went for a more strength build for him. People are more likely to fall in line behind a giant monster of a leader over a slender small more humanoid looking fellow. I had this same conversation about the Swain change, are you more likely to follow an old cripple man over a seasoned looking war vet that walks with Noxian values.

I know it sounds like a very masculine/sexist view but we can’t use our current world views to judge the character designs/lore of a past time.

I just don't agree. I think the way he looked was awesome. In fact, the idea that he wasn't strictly human makes great sense that he can have less muscle mass. his strength and power came from an unseen energy source (Within the sword), not just pure muscle.

And, won't you feel the same way about Riven then?

I have level 7 aatrox,

I also thought it was strange you felt compelled to add that as if it meant some proof of authority in the subject or something. lol I have about 90k points on him but its not like I have to throw that around as if it meant anything.

I think the players who play the champion who is receiving a rework have more credibility to discuss the rework, my opinion.

I like big burly brutes to be honest.
