PSA: Don't play top

TheDevice··78 votes·4,359 views

I think Riot has pretty much let everyone know at this point that Top doesn't matter and plays no real purpose in this game anymore. There is nothing important about top lane. There's no emphasis placed on top lane other than herald. All damage and all that matters is bot lane. If your adc sucks; you lose. Thats the game. If their bot lane is better than your bot lane; you lose the game.

Had a jungler completely neglect top for bot lane. Sure whatever do what you gotta do right? Its a bot lane meta so whatever. Somehow I still got the only tower for our team and our bot still lost.. hard. 0/10 jhin and like a 3/10 veig. There was nothing to salvage. Nothing I could do. Even helping your bot lane doesn't even ensure victory. It call comes down to who is the better ADC in that game. Who's using the better adc. Who has the better support. Thats it. Obviously MF > Jhin hard right now (btw don't play jhin if you're not like extremely good at him right now. He's not freelo like he used to be) and yes our ADC player was probably playing for the first time. But why is it nobody can do ANYTHING to stop some fed adc at this point?

Too much ADC emphasis. Purposefully so. Maybe Riot felt like Mid was always getting the attention in pro play and nobody payed enough attention to the ADC players. IDK but why can't riot feels the same way about top then? Wheres all the love for top?

Toplane still serves a clear purpose: Getting your jungler fed early so he can then wreck the botlane which then wins the game. Toplane is by far the easiest target for early ganks unless there is a really save champ like spellbook vlad with ghost+flash, si that's where you get your feed as jungler that you need to succesfully ~~gank ~~ camp bot.

Oxyrotten3 votes

It's only the easiest to gank before you figure in team comp, champion kits, player skill, wave management, team communication, strategy, cd and flash/escape baiting, commitment baiting, map design, game time, objective priority, and a number of other things that come after champ select. Saying it's the easiest lane to gank is a bit misleading.

Jungle CAN'T get fed in my majority of games because he simply is not interested to gank his top.I'm a Jax main and believe me or not noone wants to take advantage of my "late game".I have no impact other than splitpushing and be the slave of my team.

If enemy's jungle camps me and die a couple of times i get flamed,if i refuse to use TP for my adc that decided to suicide in enemy's jungle i get flamed,if i use TP to bot lane and both my adc+support are wathcing me dying when i was about to kill enemy's adc i get flamed.Whatever top lane does always but always he is at fault.Even if i win my top lane noone will care and the whole team will play around a 0/10 adc.

I finished Gold 4 and started from silver 2.Almost all junglers in my recent games would totally refuse to help their top lane win and push and tried again and again to help our monkey adc only to fail yet again.

While there is definitely too much bot lane emphasis, I don't quite agree with the whole "top can't do anything" posts.

I'm still finding success in top lane, even in games where our ADC isn't carrying and when theirs is.

Yeah, I've had many games myself where we lost due to a fed top laner completely dominating the game.

Can't talk about diamond (and perhaps high plat) and up, but at the very least, for gold and lower, saying top laners can't carry is wrong.

I've played games where I've either been the Fed top laner and lost or been dominated by a counter pick and they lost.

These games are far more common than you'd think

Problem with the mirror argument here is that it doesn't translate properly.

If people say top can't carry anymore, but someone says top can actually carry at times, that basically breaks the initial statement.

If you want to direct the discussion to how hard it is, or what champions can do it, then that should be the conversation starter. But stating that top can't carry, at the very least up to gold level, is false by the simple fact that people have proven to be able to do so.

Yup it's easy to just go "Top Can't Carry" which is a non factual statement, if anything an exaggeration I've been guilty of this myself, I think a more fitting comment would be "Top has a much harder time carrying" due to the lack of influence they have over the game flow compared to what they used to have.

I'd say it's very possible to carry from the top lane, but the proviso is you do need to have someone else on your team that's half competent in their role to ensure "Okay, our ADC is not up to snuff but our top lane is snowballing, let's concentrate our resources on using that top laners lead to shut out the game before their ADC becomes able to stop them"

Whereas bot lane?

Just be a competent ADC, even if you have bad team mates, they can meat shield for you while you destroy the enemy team from the back line.

Any role can carry, it's the variance I suppose we're really talking about, right now the Top lane has a much lower chance of carrying the game compared to mid, jungle or ADC, I'd say they're currently even with Support for Carry potential in that they can carry if they have competent team mates they can work with.

Actually, do play Top. Pick Rengar with Ignite and Electrocute. Do nothing but sit in the bush because your leap range is as wide as the entire lane. Stack up passive, jump on them the instant they dare to farm a single cs, Q-auto-Q Ignite and oneshot them at level one. You're now snowballing unstoppably at the 2:30 mark and can solo carry.

Except, the Rengar cheese only works against anyone whom hasn't played against him.

If you're gonna try the brush camp, I'm going to sit and farm under my tower, watch you get frustrated and rush tabis

Then you'll try tower dive, realize I'm Shen or Maokai or Jax or Fiora or Vladimir or Pantheon and die.

Rengar cheese again, only works against anyone that hasn't played against it, once they know what to expect, they won't fall for it twice.

Low elo top laners can carry, always have, Tryndamere for example historically has been known as low elo top lane stomper. Doesn't mean that he is a good champion or that, top lane is in a good spot though.

same... i can carry if bot success to stay even (the issue is here XD)

Z3Sleeper2 votes

That's the real issue. Bot lane can never go 0-0 or 0-1. It's either they go 12-0 or 0-12, there is no in between. But when there is, that's our time to shine.

Considering there are two people to carry bot, but if support carries it'll only show on the adc's KDA, you should expect to see more 'fed bot's win a game.

But I don't consider them the carry role. Top and jungle are the lanes I see go most out of control.

A Renekton top- who beats their lane opponent, and then gets ganked by (ohoho) our ASSASSIN jungler, when he's already 3/0? And he has demolish? I'll be sitting there botlane trying to get my ADC their third kill, whilst this dude reaches inhib turret.

The trick to it - Juggernauts. Not flat tanks. Illaoi, Renek, Garen, Darius, Tank Vlad, Mundo, even Olaf- they're the nightmares from toplane right now. They don't 1v5 the team. They 1v2. They focus objectives- and if the whole team comes to stop them, they peace out (while their own team forces another objective). The enemy adc tends to get giant slayer 3rd item and you can often win before that point.

EssenceOfPoo2 votes

pretty much my observation and reasoning as well. bot lane is more impactful because usually it's not just one person feeding or dominating, it's both of them. if one player is going to die, the other feels obligated to help out and sometimes result in their own death.

not to mention that's where the drakes are.

it's a lane with the least amount of outplay because it's mostly item dependent. half of the champions in that lane rely on their auto attacks to dish out damage and marksmen don't rely on mechanics to outplay your opponents as much as items. so if a marksman is ahead of the other, it's usually difficult to comeback.

I don't play top anymore. Took many shit games versus hard counters

vgamedude5 votes

That's what happens when you have a forced meta with every game having one forced carry role that's one class ALL THE TIME. In every single game.

NotSpecialDude5 votes

I find myself neutral to your concerns really. It's probably because I've been on a steady diet of mid/jungle, but I can both sympathize and disagree with you.

On the one hand, bot lane has 2 players in it to top's 1. 40% of the team is down there, so to say that bot lane has a bigger impact enlists a "No shit Sherlock" response from me. On the other hand, I do play top occasionally and I know the frustration of winning lane and losing game. That happens the most to top laners given the isolation the lane typically has.

I tend to look at it like this. The isolation of top lane is the double edge sword for the team. On the plus side, its the most expendable teammate, allowing for a massive amount of flexibility. Top lane can easily fill holes that the team comp may otherwise have. But the downside is that it is the least NATURALLY influential lane. If you want to make an impact you need to work twice as hard compared to other laners. Either you split-push to high hell, have a strong teamfight presence, or you're so fed that the enemy needs to send 3 guys to deal with you. If you can't do these three things, then you're effectively a second support. If this bugs you then top really isn't for you.

Rouwhorst2 votes

If you can't do these three things, then you're effectively a second support.

Linking being useless with support isn't right anymore nowadays. Support have high influence and their kits are quite useful for the utility. When a fighter is behind, there is often very little he offers. His kit is made for duels and skirmishes, all he brings is damage and or some tankiness which fall both off when behind.

NotSpecialDude1 votes

I never intended to say that supports are useless. Rather, I'm saying that if your behind in top lane, your only viable option is to play as a second support. The issue is exactly as you said, most tops don't have the tools to even do that.

So in other words. I spoke poorly. I should have said;

"If you can't do these three things, then your only hope is if you can pivot as a second support."

I can show you game after game after game after game of me winning top, getting a beast KDA, solid farm etc. The only reason we will win is if our adc is also really good. Period.

The proof is in the games.

I can lose or win top lane, it doesn't matter. I know this because I can SMASH my lane opponent every game and still end up losing to their better ADC. I just obliterated this Jhin last game and we lost. Why? Because they had a better ADC then we did. Its that simple. Our adc had no idea what they were doing.

He's not entirely wrong though. There are top lane players that otp the lane, and still manage to get challenger tier (on multiple accounts). Ironically, the boards might claim tanks rule the lane, but a lot of those guys actually get to carry with bruisers/skirmishers. It could be someone like Dekar (Rengar/Riven ), or even someone as infamous as Hashinshin (Fiora Jax Olaf )

Had a game where we had a gnar who fed enemy yasuo, real hard like 0-7 in 15 minutes. Every other lane won, but didnt stomp our enemy. Enemy yasuo (a toplaner) kept pushing to inhib turret 2v1 our jungler aswell. Late game team fights yasuo carries fights by himself as a toplaner while our gnar is none existant.

I think you are the gnar in those situations, sorry buddy.

Other examples: ornn slipping banning phase and winning team fights with his ult. Nasus farming top to the point where no one can 2v1 him. Malphite stacking armor and engaging team fights with his team. Yorick split pushing to inhib with ult requiring 3 people's attention.

Toplane is the most diverse lane, what you pick matters a lot more than other lanes because you can choose how you wanna play around the game. Split pushing? Hard carry fighter? Utility tanky engager?

Yea ofc if your botlane feeds his ass you'll have a tough time, but like the examples i gave it goes both ways.

Also, btw.

  1. No. I'm never the gnar who gets demolished top. I win my lane 90% of the time. If that meant winning 90% of the time I'd be a god but it doesn't so qq. I'm definately not the Gnar in that situation.
  2. If yasuo, an extreme hyper carry who's very presence in any game can tilt multiple people, is one of your main examples I think you're only make a worse case for top lane than ever. Yas isn't even regarded as a traditional top laner, hes just so over-the top that he can kinda do it anyway and get a way with it.
  3. Ornn was kinda busted for a while and got nerfed yeah?
  4. Split pushing is annoying; not some spectacular tactic. Its a hundred times more successful in low elo. That should tell you the validity of that tactic.
  5. I have more nasus examples below. Again, thats just saying: Hey every role is amazing if they can just freely do whatever they want all the time. People in low elo for some reason just don't look at top lane, ever. But I have a suspicion as to why. If they did look top, split pushing and all that garbo wouldn't fly; just like it doesn't in higher elo. These are little more than cheap tricks in my opinion.

I don't like the whole Split push reasoning. That's a simple low elo tactic which banks on enemy team having little knowledge in how to stop them. Just like any Nasus player. They just pray the enemy jungler will leave them alone and let them farm.

Past two games for example. I obliterated a nasus both times. The first game I was forced to stop contesting his farm since I had pushed him to tier 2 already and his jax jungler started babysitting him. So I backed off. I didn't want to because i knew my jungler wasn't going to contest his farming. And I was right. My jungler never came top to punish that Nasus and he ended up freefarming and knocking down our towers.

Second game I just had to not care about my jungler. I knew, again, he wasn't going to punish the nasus. So I had to chance it. I was still getting ganked but I didn't care. I just had to out maneuver the gank and come back to lane to punish nasus.

Split pushing is the same thing. It relies on people being bad rather than you actually being any good. This is not the same because these scenarios can easily be thwarted just by the team knowing the game. Its actually not that hard to stop but usually requires more than just one person.

However. I'll extend an olive branch. Maybe because if the state of top, its also become a tad underestimated. People don't even bother to learn the simple strats of beating a split push champion like trynd or yorick. Don't bother to learn how to punish Nasus etc. Again, however, this is partially because Riot has slowly added more importance to other positions. Top lane has always been considered an "island" (just a place to overall ignore and let the two top laners duke it out) but its become even more isolated and uninteresting than before.

Split push low elo tactic? Peoplec in LCS split push all the time, split pushing in order to split the enemy team and force them to either engage 5v4 and lose objective or send people to stop split and risking othed lanes. The game isnt aram you shouldnt grouo mid and bash heads for 20 minutes. I gave you examples of other toplaners with other styles like ornn and malph who are great for teamfighting . Of course you exclude yasuo from this example, or ornn, my guess is you dont play them so it doesnt count.

Lastly, funny how you talk about low elo when you are literally bouncing from bronze to silver and back for 4 seasons straight.

But i guess you truly know the best.

You brought up nasus and yorick. These are the prime example of Split push champions. how often do you see them in challenger games? How often do you see them in high elo games?

Anyone can split push ffs. Anyone. Doesn't even have to be the top laner. You don't even have to split push top lol. You're not even understand what I'm saying. There is s difference between split pushing out of necessity or off-the-cuff strat depending on the game and picking a split pusher like yorick or trynd and just constantly do that the entire game as your sole means of climbing elo. There is a huge difference.

But go on and pretend yorick, trynd or even nasus are played in the LCS.

Yes I exclude Yasuo in this example because hes overtuned by Riots own admission. They're reworking him arent they? And ornn received a nerf didn't he? Which brought down his winrate.

And yeah I'm low elo but have been playing this game for a super long time. I also tend to pick champions that I like rather than whats meta. If I really wanted to climb as bad as everyone else, I'd play adc vayne right now. Instead I play the champ I've always liked, Sion. And I do extremely well on him. I almost always have around a 3.5 kda on him. I win the majority of my matchups top. None of that changes any of the facts or the truth of the current state of bot lane.

JackMcSnipeyz3 votes

Anyone can split push? What? Not anyone can split push, split pushing isnt juat farming side lanes. Split pushers are champs who can win duels 1v1 and require more than 1 champ to stop them, try split pushing as a mage or marksman, see how you get, you wont. Yorick, nasus, trynd, jax, shen, all have their ways of presuring OBJECTIVES, in the end you can get all the KD in the world but towers win games. There's this famous video "unwinnable situations" about how shen won a game by split pushing smartly, forcing the enemy team to either give up on a baron, or inhibitor, and it won them the game. So no, split pushing isnt just brain dead throwing yourself at towers none stop. I also gave other examples you brush aside like ornn and malph yasuo and gankplank, for team fighting toplaners who have game changing ults. Saying yasuo doesnt count because he's OP is the same as saying vayne doesnt count because she's OP, so pick your excuse.

Also you cant say "yorick and nasus cant be good, no one picks them in the LCS" and then go and say "i'll just ez climb with vayne" (hint: no you wont you'll just blame other things like assassins) when vayne herself isnt picked in the LCS, so by your logic she isnt good enough aswell.

Lastly, i play sion aswell but as duo melee bot (not conventional but it works) i have 0 problems dueling carries, he has the damage, CC, and durability to duel marksmam 1v1 when not behind.

LordGeovanni1 votes

With the magic damage to towers added now mages are now able to split push effectively only champions that still cant split push are tanks. Split pushing like you said needs your team else where to be pressureing another lane or baron and taking that fight when they have the number advantage. Which is why it doesnt work in low elo. It requires your allies to realise that they have a free fight instead of farming mid and standing at their downed tier 1 tower instead of right out side enemy mid base and waiting for the 4v3

JackMcSnipeyz1 votes

I didnt say these were the ONLY ones who can split push, but they are the best. If you try to split push with syndra the enemy team wont need to send 2 people to get you, only one who can 1v1 you, because syndra isnt a good duelist, and has no escapes. Trynd however, has his ult that lets him duel anyone 1v1, or nasus who does a ton of damage and is tanky, or yorick with his maiden turning 1v1 into 2v1. Which is why not any champ can split push effectivly, anyone can just run into turrets and trade kills mindlessly, split pushers require team effort to get them off your turret, that's my point.

LordGeovanni1 votes

With syndras ult yea you would need more than 1 person the diffrence is that syndra has little chance of winning versus 2 people on the chance that she doesnt know they are comming aka they take an unwarded path to catch her and even if she does take two people to follow her she wont hold them for long with is also another requirement to being a good split pusher. as far as doing damage to towers even mages are viable at split pushing.

Some people might be hardstuck, some people might not have wanted to climb higher.

Jeez, just look at me. "Hardstuck gold 5" by your definition, but I never really cared to go past gold 5. I will be aiming higher this season for the first time.

Someone has to play top. Just because you feel like you make no difference there doesn't mean other people won't be able to make a difference.
