How it feels to get a champion shard from a chest

The Ecdysiast··14 votes·3,303 views

Infinitely more ripped off than a skin shard, since all long time players own every champion already and effectively get nothing at all from them. Champion shards should be removed entirely from the chests since excess champion shards were made the main method of obtaining champions.

It'd be a smart business decision too, since they already made the poor decision of decreasing orange essence payout. Guaranteeing skins, even if they stuck with the formula they currently used-- which I know without a doubt has a higher chance to give you skin shards you either already own or already own skins on the champion for-- would allow them to make money from anyone who likes to gamble. And if they get an Ultimate skin shard? So what? Still not losing potential profits, since they'd need to buy more chests for the orange essence to craft it anyway.

But as is, there is no incentive at all, especially among long time players, to buy chests. No reason to go for the gamble when the odds are stacked heavily against you even getting anything at all for your money. Anyone should be able to see the flaw in asking for free content for free as a replacement for getting paid content for free.

"Free shit" because of what, them not spending money? You have to put in quite a bit of time and effort to get a chest and 3 key fragments, and time is valuable and not free shit. But okay, alright, let's say you're right.

What about me, when I buy 10 chests a month with real, actual money that I make and get 2 champion shards? That means 20% of my purchase's value has just dropped to 0. It's literally wasting your money.

This has been my problem. Most of the money I've spent on League has been on the chests in the past. Maybe $500 worth of chests, and now I have no reason to buy anymore. The value you get from them are SO awful now that it just doesn't make sense. I feel like from the chests I do open all I ever get are champion shards anyway. I get so excited to get my key fragments so I can finally open a chest and then I get another champion shard and it pisses me off. I have 8.5k orange essence and 25 skin shards just waiting to be used, but it seems the only thing I get are more champ shards.

Did you read it? It's how it feels to PAY for something, or work for something, and receive nothing.

It's not lesser free shit if it's absolutely nothing.

You make a very good point. I would like to add that they also implemented the champion capsules with the new level up system which also drop champion shards.

I always thought it was redundant of them to put in the champion capsules while also allowing chests to drop champion shards. It's why I stopped buying chests. I would rather not risk losing my money on champion shards from hextech chests. Although I haven't really been in the mood to give Riot money lately given their greediness with certain things but that's another topic.

Ya, the way the crafting system works now, chests/keys aren't worth the $$ I bought several when the system still felt pretty good and walked away feeling ok, but felt I would be better off spending the $$ on the skin I wanted outright. Now, w/ the state of chests being so bad I'm not even tempted. When you have to melt 5ish legacy skins to unlock one, yuck... Where is the reward in that? Bad enough when the reward is free but wtf would someone spend real money anymore on such a garbage system?

Ztoka2 votes

Another bad feeling is getting a legacy skin in a chest then realizing you need to get 5 more and disenchant them to buy the initial skin.. Good stuff!! At least I was around when hex crafting first started and was really sweet and felt great! Not so much anymore..

Agreed. It feels terrible. I've got Project Vayne and Nurse Akali shards in my inventory and almost enough essence. Got a chest yesterday, but it had a Malzahar champ shard. He is one of my most hated champs. I feel really ripped off.

As a broke player with no time, opening champion shards feels like a miracle to me because you literally get no blue essence anymore. I like the old system a lot better.

Yes, but this new system encourages to make you spend money, because instead of taking like 4 days to get 6300 IP/BE it takes 2 weeks, and then gets longer and longer the higher level you get. So you just get tired and buy the champions you want with your actual money. >:( I hate the new currency system, it's very bad. You should at least still get BE from games like IP. (Not to mention most of the time the capsules you get on level are trash and only accumulate to about 1000 BE anyways, and every shard I've gotten is a champ I own. [I own all but about 30 champions])

You left out the most crucial factor. "Being a new player." Sure, champions cost too much for the fact they make their money with skins and would make more if new players could quickly get the characters they want. That's the point of the new system-- you might get the champion you want, higher chance for "milestone" levels, and then the essence cost is half what it would be to just break apart other shards.

You get already get more champion shards. It's just very unclear to me why someone would want paid/ extremely limited content like the chests to include free content when there's a high probability it'll contain a champion shard you already own that converts to only 90 BE. Better to get a skin shard and then have some incentive to play more and get the champion for it.

Legit question, why buy chests with real $$$ at all?

dont get me wrong, i agree, it feels really shitty to get a champion shard on a chest, even when you get the chest and key in game, but hey at least on that scenario its still free stuff so whatever.

but when i see people complaining about this topic almost everyone is aware that if you buy chests with real money is practically a scam (not really), and i mean, you can buy whatever skin you want directly so why risk it? unless you want a legacy skin then i guess it would make a little bit of sense, but still, even if you remove the champion shards the probability of getting one specific skin is very, very low.

and if you're buying chests for gemstones then it doesn't matter if you get champions or not, so yeah, i don't get it [sg-janna]

I specifically said in the original post that the current system gives us no reason to buy chests with real money, especially because the orange essence payout was reduced for no justifiable reason.

And as far as hextech skins go, it is possible to get the shard for those skins from crafting rather than have to pay 10 gemstones for them. So it does matter quite a bit if you're buying chests for the gemstones-- every champion shard is a missed chance to get the skin before reaching 10 gemstones.

One thing I don't see anyone mentioning, here, is that the obvious solution is NOT to stop including champion shards, but to reward those of us who have bought EVERY SINGLE CHAMP by letting us do something else with the extra shards.

I've been playing since the start of season 3, bought every champ and at least one skin for most of them. I have an absurd number of shards, and the only thing they're good for is a trivial amount of blue energy. They could give us something else to do with the stuff. I keep holding on to them in the hopes that Riot will hire someone with a sense of decency about this.

It's bad enough that I'd be level 500+ if only there had never been a level cap, am too busy to play several times a day like I did for the first few years, and yet all I got as a reward was some obscure emote that nobody even recognizes as meaning I've played so long and hard.
