"Taking it from a Diamond"

Recently I read an Post in the "Best" category where a Diamond player expressed his surprise and disbelief for the level of difficulty getting out of the Silver rank on their smurf acct ( https://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/gameplay-balance/n3f5kn7V-as-a-diamond-silver-elo-is-surprisingly-hard ). He roughly stated that the skill levels for those in these ladders were vastly different, to quote... > ...Some players feel like they know exactly what to do and lane / last hit really well and I'm surprised they're in silver, and then there's others that I'm shocked have even made it this far.

Most players in League of Legends (who are ranked) reside between Bronze 5 and Silver 1. About 70% of all players exist in these two ranks. ( http://www.leagueofgraphs.com/rankings/rank-distribution )

The problem I've found and all those I've talked to, is that the match making for ranked matches is terrible. As a Bronze 1 player, I can get paired with anyone who shares my similar MMR (Bronze 1 person playing against Silver 3 players in a ranked match). Which makes sense in a NORMAL match but in a RANKED match is has no ground and makes no sense.

Consider the word "rank" a ranking ladder is supposed to be something you actually climb, moving up or down on the ladder depending on your skill. It doesn't matter if your Bronze 1 and your skill is Gold 1, you're still in the bronze ladder. Therefore you should be playing against those in the Bronze ladder ONLY. The reason the vast majority of players feel frustrated with the ranking system is from the feeling of being stuck. "I win a few matches and now the players are harder and I lose a few matches, Now the players are easy and I win a few) The MMR system is moving players on a virtual ladder, when in reality (and in an actual ranked ladder) no matter your skill you should still be competing with those in your ladder until you work your way up/down to those of your skill.

Riot is constantly working on their game but unfortunately has forgotten about the majority of its player base. The match making for those in ranked matches is broken ESPECIALLY with those in ranked teams or 5v5 flex matches where challengers can get paired with much low level opponents.

If you got this far, thanks for reading and feel free to leave your opinion on the matter or experiences you've had in the ranking world of league in the comments below.

Good.

Diamond Pride is meant for the upper echelons, not for Bronze Chaos.

Diamond pride? How bad does it hurt when a Diamond gets beat by a bronzie?

Diamond pride?

That's right.

It is easy to get frustrated at the disconnect between MMR and rank, which is what you are talking about when you say you want to play against bronze players in bronze. Think of it this way: Those players are the same skill as you as measured by the only thing that matters, MMR. Ranks are temporary and only hover around your true skill, which is why you see players fluctuate. Honestly I'd like to see them go back to just an MMR system, or at least explain it better so people don't get so frustrated.

In regards to that post, I think he was expecting to just go into silver and stomp every game easily with just whatever. I know I did when I went into flex and got placed silver 5. I played an off role on a champion I didn't play and did decently, but it really didn't show that I was diamond. Then, I switched to main role or my secondary with champions I knew, and I was winning games. Sure, it isn't some insane 90% winrate, but while I was tryharding, I got up to 70% which is climbing incredibly fast. The inconsistent teamwork is a boon if you know what you're doing. Prey on it from your enemies and exploit their mistakes while communicating to your team to prevent the same ones.

I agree on some aspects you described and liked your explanation of how to get through silver. When I have time I can win pretty well. The thing that annoys me is the misconception of the ranking ladder. Like you mentioned its very confusing. Your a Silver player competing against gold players... to get to another point in silver? I Think they need to choose one or the other. Either have a strict ladder, or have it completely MMR based. Its unnecessary to have a shell of one when it's really the other.

The idea behind the ranking system is to give a more tangible reward/rank to players. Saying you're 1900 vs 2000 MMR doesn't really give you a sense of where someone is, but saying p2 vs D5 does. The problem for me is that they don't just use the rank, they combine it with MMR and make a mess.

They absolutely have made a mess of things. The other problem is it can sometimes create a form of "elo-hell" loop. Meaning, I've won 5 matches in-a-row and boosted my MMR rating. I'm just barley in my Silver 1 series, but now because I've done so well recently, the matches that really count I'm going to be going up against harder opponents all of a sudden. You lose a few matches and your MMR drops and you easily win your matches again. This cycle has happened to me almost every time I've gotten to a series. I eventually got around them but it took a long time to figure it out.

I disagree with the elo hell loop. If you boost your mmr and are winning, you should be against harder opponents. it should get harder as you go up the ranks. If you hit a wall, its because that is where you belong. It can be frustrating if that wall happens to be right around 90-100LP, but if a small boost of 5 games is enough, you're right about where you belong.

I disagree. I haven't moved ranks at all, thats the whole point Bambei haha. My MMR went up, now I'm against players 3 ladders above me and I happen to lose that match. All the while my actual rank hasn't moved a bit

Yes. MMR doesn't fluctuate that much, and people's skill levels are divided by further than divisions. Your "true" rank could be G5 90 LP when you're g5 30 currently. That would cause you to go into promos, but then fail them every time because you're not good enough for gold 4. Again, the enemies ranks don't matter, because that does not corespond to their MMR.

I won't lie, the only reason I'm Plat is because of Swain. Remember when Swain first got reworked? Well people only started permabanning him about a week and a half after the patch, and I had already known how to play Swain when I discovered that top tank Swain could 1v5 nearly every game. I spammed him like crazy for that week and a half, and it launched me right into Gold 5 from mid Silver. Then he got subsequently nerfed 3+ patches in a row.

But that didn't matter. Once I was in Gold I went on a winstreak playing the same champs that I could barely make work in Silver, and soon enough I was in Plat with hella good MMR. That carried over to this season and within a month of the start of the season I was above my last year's rank.

But the point is, I knew even when I was in silver that there wasn't a whole lot I could be doing better. This isn't a case of "I deserve better", because I'm a firm believer that in the majority of cases your playstyle definitely will reflect your rank, and it is very rare that you are in silver playing perfectly and not climbing. But I can't deny that it is extremely difficult to move into gold simply because nothing is reliable. As soon as I was in an ELO where teammates were moderately reliable, I was able to play a lot more consistently and rely on the rest of the players to act in a way that I could understand and play against.

It felt like changing from running in one of those Noah's Ark funhouses that turn and shift the floor to a standard track and field track. At that point, you either run the race and win or realize you suck at running in the first place.

To be fully honest, the "silver elo was surprisingly hard" thread comes from someone that hasn't played in low elo for a really long time and didn't get back his full on carry reflexes. Also, there was a fair part of upvote whoring. I've been in low elo myself and a bunch of friends of mine too. There are some rare difficult games, but most of the games are pretty easy to carry. Your team might not have a clue on how to play the game, but neither does the enemy team. Snowball them to oblivion and solo carry the game. It's obviously easier with high damage carry champions more than with utility team-reliant champions, but it's still doable. The lower elos do mistakes CONSISTENTLY ; it's insane. They don't even realize it.
