In any game where you have to pick a class, I always pick mages. But LOL mages seem to lack something. It's not that the are weak, some are fine in terms strength or OP'ness. Yet the only champs I see mid are 
almost all the time.
Is it that they are uninteresting and boring or too complicated and unreliable?
Can riot do something about this?

You missed the point. Im trying to figure out why mages are so unpopular. It has nothing to do with my last game.

Because AD items are stronger early. So AD assassins/fighters snowball better given equal mastery. Combine that with reduced negative impact from being an all AD team due to Black Cleaver and such.

Jokes aside, they've had nearly their entire item list nerfed in the mage 'update', then several of the prominent ones were nerfed regarding some fringe abuse cases. They can't snowball as easily, aren't as mobile, and most are limited by mana; I most as a few have too low of costs and/or too high of mana regeneration that makes this limitation negligible. A few examples that come to mind would be orianna (she actually got a buff of reduced mana costs), xerath & swain can both restore mana by farming, fiddlesticks since his playstyle is often to wait for an all-in; fizz & ekko & camile also rarely have mana issues unless you're constantly spamming to farm, though they're also more assassin styles.

The 14th Angel1 votesprime example, abyssal scepter is now abyssal shit, rylais was 100ap 400 health, now 75 ap 300 health. Gunblade nerfed on revolver, just too many items are nerfed and havent seen a buff on an ap item in awhile
