Why is marksmen a role to begin with?

At least in WoW, eg 1 healing class doesn't push out all the other healers, but here in League, there's only 1 sieger class. In fact, this sieger class does other things pretty good too, sometimes more than other classes' natives.

I guess it's okay to have 1 out of the 4 lanes (jg included) dedicated to 1 particular class of champs, out of the what, 8 categories of champs? Because why not. Even their slave-in-chains have more variety than they are (which let's be honest, while Supports are never meant to be the ~~R-ADC~~ marksmen role's slaves, they are certainly balanced as one).

EDIT:

Also don't tell me the next thing that's gonna happen is that Riot's gonna make marksmen a microcosm of all the League's classes combined, where there's a marksmen for every job (marksmen tank, marksmen assassins, marksmen mage etc). Wait a minute....

Don't forget Viktor is also popular down there as is Anivia (who sits at 61% Winrate in diamond and higher bot lane)

Or the implication is that they prefer him as a bottom lane magic damage dealing marksman rather than a mid lane magic damage dealing marksman and want him to be viable down bot to provide the diversity of damage that he did down there before becoming a mid laner (which was their fault anyways.)

I'm confused, I think they just differentiated between the two roles. Not saying bottom lane is the marksman role but rather he belongs to the bottom lane marksman role as opposed to the bottom lane support role.
