Seriously... how do you lane against Darius?

USG Failsawce··11 votes·15,204 views

Picked Malphite top... enemy picked Darius after. I thought well that's crappy, but whatever I'll just play it super safe... I'll just build hp/armor, and farm before 6, avoid his Q and E - then farm from a distance after he's 6. Even started cloth 4. Got a reasonable amount of farm, not as much as him, but whatever.

But as soon as we both hit 6 he completely dives me... I'm about 3/4 hp, passive is up, enough mana for a Q. Get dove, pulled, Q'd, Auto Ult ignite.. he flashes, barely lives and I die. First blood.

End of the lane. Can't even farm the little bit that I did before... One E and I'm dead again, can't even get in range for exp.

Our jungle, Shaco, didn't even gank any lane til 7, but even without that... Darius has been being played a lot lately. And I thought I had a handle on dealing with him (just stay back, don't die, don't feed him, whatever). But really... I can't even manage that on any champ that's not a counter pick, the Flash E's are basically a 100% death.

Maybe this is a QQ/vent thread, not asking for a nerf... just could use some tips. I'm unranked and far from good, but usually win lane and do well in the elo I go against. I avoid 85% of what he throws, but one single mistep and it's over and that seems kinda silly to me.

I'm sure this will get downvoted just because, but any thoughts?

Okay. That dive you were talking about, that snowballed the lane and ruined you?

You were playing Malphite. You could have ulted at any time and at worst you would have been forced out of lane. If you didn't even have enough mana for an ult or a full combo, there's your problem.

BastionKross4 votes

Yeah, I was gonna say. That Darius burned everything he had, including both summoner spells, to dive. One Malph ult would have foiled everything and left Darius weak enough after that to back off and let the Malph farm; or at best gotten the Malph a kill.

If you're sticking around lane with no mana at level 6 vs a champion like Darius, it's not going to be pretty when he decides to all in. Did the cloth armor get built into a item 3024 so that Malph could spam his abilities a bit more to farm under turret? If Malph was farming well enough, he could also consider a item 3010 for a first back.

The Malph being oom and getting punished for it was not the Darius' fault.

If I build that way I have 0 lane sustain, and no hp or enough armor to deal with his harass. This leads to the exact same problem in the end. Sure I'll have mana for an ult, but I'll have to back 3x as often and won't get even close to as much farm.

The end result is the same, he gets further ahead getting free farm and denying me mine. How is this a solution? Other people say build hp. Everyone else on the internet says build armor AND hp. Glacial shroud and cataylst certainly doesn't cut it. Can barely farm enough to get a catalyst anyway.

Darius does high amount of true dmg with his ult. You better play safe and ping for ganks, he has no escape and has to fight you and your jungler.

This I understand, it's the actual laning that's the problem. Even with a successful gank, Darius is still a problem both before and after. Might give me about 15-20 seconds to breath.

Explain to me please how I'm supposed to save enough mana to ult at 6 when I start cloth 4, or ruby 2 just to survive long enough to farm?

Even playing it safe, keeping my distance, and dodging most of his Qs and Es? I still need Qs to avoid a lot of his harass, as well as the occasional W or E to farm with from a decent distance. And even given the fact that I give up a lot of farm so I don't get murdered?

You're permitted to lose lane against Darius. It's alright to back and let him get damage on your tower if you've been in lane a while and you need to shop.

You, as Malphite, are much more powerful than he is in both ganks and teamfights. Use that.

Fair enough. My pride makes it difficult for me to just back off and lose lane... it doesn't happen often as Malphite, even against my counters. But Darius just ugh...

I suppose this is about as good as it will get a lot times, and you're right about the ganks/teamfight power. So good advice, thanks.

DeathBurst1 votes

I think it's important to make a difference between "losing" and "not winning", especially if it's your own pride holding you back. There are some match-ups where you simply cannot win, and where it's ok to "not win", as long as you don't outright "lose". If you have a champ that is better in Team fights, that out-scales his opponent in late game or whatever similar reason, being 20 or 30 CS behind by 15 min and losing your tower first against a lane bully or a snowball champ is perfectly OK. Laning is important, sure, but what matters most in the end will always be the general situation of the match, not your lane. Just remember to ping SS when your laner starts to roam ;)

"How do you lane against Darius?"

Option A: You don't. You hump your tower, let him push, get as much cs as you can, and bend over during the inevitable 2v1 tower dive gangbang when his jungler/mid comes to f you up.

Option B: You don't. You were smart and lucky enough to ban him. Now instead you get to deal with: Ekko Swain Ryze Fizz Kayle

I was the Shaco in your game - Funny when I saw this post description I knew it was my game. Regardless of my performance as a jungler find ways of not feeding - which really is the key - although this game was just bad on so many counts

1.Take TANK masteries - get all the healing and health bonus you can for this - I always take strenght of ages for top lane 2.HugTower 3.Keep your tower TriBush warded at all times [ vision ward? ] so you dont get suprise back ganked. 4.I recommend getting an item that can earn you gold passively - ZZROT is my main item. Not only will it help push your lane safely but every minion it kills will give you credit for last hitting [ full gold ]. - give you movement speed at towers, gives you per 57-7% movement speed - health regen - armor and MR

literally just sit at your tower with the zzrot behind it, take barrier/heal, and get scaling runes and masters for armor health regen etc.

5.Bulid bami cinder for last hitting at tower as well. When I play top lane I rarely have jungler help - not that I intentionally did this to you but my priority is getting the ADC fed.

Last game I played against a Darius I destroyed the lane without ever killing him. The objective is his tower - not his life.

Sorry it was such a bad game.

it is pretty impossible to die with malphite while darius is diving you were doing something wrong

Sorry what? All he has to do is land his first Q... E, auto, Q, Ult ignite and flash out... We were both 6 and basically every Darius does this. Doesn't matter how much Hp you have left, or what champ you are. That's not even the problem, it's the laning overall once counter picked.

{quoted}

Okay first off, STOP BUILDING ARMOR. Darius has built in armor pen and generally builds black cleaver first, max E and black cleaver fully stacked is 55% armor pen on darius. BUILD HEALTH. Steraks is an amazing item against him, titanic if it works for your champ. Warmogs. He has absolutely no health damage unless for some stupid reason he builds last whisper

But wouldn't armor help early on anyway?... His level 1 E does only 5% Apen... which means even if he maxes his E first, it won't get to 10% and above til level 4, which no Darius does anyway. And only in 5% increments... Especially vs Malphite, since his passive increases his armor.

If I start cloth 4, wouldn't that give me better lane sustain, and then on first back start cinder or giant's belt? I get what you're saying, but the early lane is what kills it... can't get farm for items otherwise. And 4 pots generally helps to sustain for longer than 2.

Baunjo1 votes

No, seriously just rush health items. He shreds armor like a monster and does true damage, and lots of it. The only thing that helps against true damage is health.

EDIT: Based on your first reply to another person on that post, it's pretty obvious you don't actually know his abilities well.

He has to hit 5 auto attack or Qs in order to recieve his passive damage bonus and full damage on his ult. If you are low enough to where he doesn't need to do that to kill you, then you shouldn't be under tower to begin with, almost any champ would shit on you.

As someone who has played a lot of Darius I can honestly say There is nothing harder to do in lane phase than tower diving someone that isn't really low. Even if you're super far ahead, landing all your shit and getting your passive is really not easy to do unless the enemy is a complete idiot or is really low and I don't have to do much

DorkunedAuras1 votes

it is not 55% armor pen. Cleaver max stacked removed 30% armor. That means darius is getting 25% pen on 70% of armor, which results in 17.5% pen from total. That means a max E and cleaver darius penetrates 47.5% armor, not 55%.

Baunjo1 votes

Huh, I didn't know it worked that way. Thanks for sharing! Still though thats like half of your armor. Build health xD

DorkunedAuras1 votes

Given that all his damage output is Physical, and there's almost no pure HP items, getting an armor/HP item is still what you were going to do.

Baunjo1 votes

Specifically item 3748 item 3053 item 3022 although mallet is a bit more situational and champion specific are great items to build against darius. I'm not saying armor is pointless, but health is more cost efficient and benefits you more.

DorkunedAuras1 votes

But specifically avoiding armor is ridiculous too. Just because he ignores 47% of it means the other 53% is doing mitigation work. combine that with the fact that the enemy team WILL have an adc that you want armor for, and not getting armor is a bit asinine.

Essentially, you're telling me to avoid getting an item that'll give me the same hp plus armor just because he penetrates some of the armor. He's hurting the cost effectiveness, but that doesn't change that it has value against him. Especially since until lvl 8, he only penetrates 5%, meaning your early armor investments are HUGELY helping survive the brutal laning a darius gives.

Baunjo1 votes

Obviously I am not saying " no armor is for noobs get good " while you are LANING still, you don't want armor, especially as your first item. Armor is essential to the game, but it's not best build against darius. He asked and I answered. These are my experiences on my most played champion this season and last season.

If you're melee you don't really get to PLAY against Darius. Laning against the Juggernaut class is one of the shittiest experiences in this game. As a melee. And even as a ranged if he pulls you you lose.

But yeah Darius counters the hell outta malph. Passive counters yours, armor shred, true damage and passive counter your usual build path, can't really phite back no matter what you try.

DeathBurst2 votes

So, I play mostly Garen, not Malphite, so I don't know to what extent my tips are applicable to your situation.

  • Try to bait his Qs. He WILL try to poke you with Q when you go in for CS, so try to feint that you are going in, back off when he Q, and then go-in for real when the Q is on CD. Remember that you can also go TOWARD him to avoid most of the Q damage and deny him the heal, that's an important part of a good trade against him.
  • Be wary of his E. A wise Darius will keep it as a threat to zone you and out-farm you. But sometimes a greedy Darius will actively try to grab and kill you. If you can bait and dodge his E, this is usually the time to CS safely (or to go in for a trade with him, at least with Garen, but maybe not with Malphite).
  • Do not hesitate to Flash early if he does manage to E you. I think it's better to instantly Flash and still be healthy and in a position to continue laning and farming than to keep Flash but be so low life that you can't really do anything.
  • Do not hesitate to back as soon as you get the gold for an important component (typically Shroud or Catalyst) and TP back in lane. You should be able to do that without losing more than 2 or 3 CS, and if he doesn't do the same, you're probably able to poke and/or out-trade him thanks to the itemization advantage.
  • Be careful of the level 2 or 3 trades, if he manages to get his levels before you.

Remember, you cannot win --unless he is greedy af and over-commit and you manage to punish him, but you shouldn't count on your opponent's mistakes. Your goal is simply to farm as best you can, to outscale him in late game and to win fights with your ult before he can even do anything. As long as you don't feed him, you're good even if you are behind. And for the records, dying is worth at least 15 or 20 CS (300 gold for him, plus the CS you lose yourself while you're dead/not in lane). That's 3 whole waves. If you lose less than 3 waves (and that's HUUUGE), backing is still preferable to dying.

I've learned that you can beat him pretty easily as Teemo and Tryndamere. As Teemo you need to make sure he never e's you otherwise you will have to blow flash or IMMEDIATELY blind him to prevent a ton of damage, but that is simple enough with your extra movespeed. Teemo's q outranges Darius's pull but only by a tiny amount so you have to be quick to just q and run the fuck away. Whittle him down and force him to go back and farm.

As Tryndamere you have to wait until level 6 otherwise you will lose any trade. With your ult and a full item you can easily beat him.

Against Darius, I start dorans blade and pots ( I always start those), then I get Tiamat, then I get phage so I can poke him and run out of his q or his slow.

If he finishes black cleaver, I match it with my own and then finish ravenous. I'm using a new build now where I get youmuu's 3rd item, I almost always buy swifties as well.

Then I'd get a steraks, maw, GA (if carrying/fed), visage, or the movement speed armor thing with the red trail. (Can't think of it's name)

IN LANE: Wait until level 2 to really do some damage, now I start Q then get W most of the time. But, if this Darius can't land his Q's get E first. You want to just poke him down and try to make him lose cs, do not all in him.

If you fight him pre 6, parry his grab if possible, but generally I just parry the slow as the grab does almost nothing. Post 6 Larry his ult, I attempt to predict it instead of waiting for the animation. BUT PARRY IT OR YOU WILL DIE.

TL:DR Poke, don't all in. Win by cs count not kills on him Parry his ult Tiamat->phage->BC->ravenous->defense item or youmuu's Pre-6 don't waste W on his Q's If possible try not to fight when he has full bleed stacks on you

(Next 2 tips apply to non-thunderlords garen) He's stronger level 1, you're stronger level 2 Use your level 2 advantage to get ahead

Actually most of these tips apply to garen, don't parry his silence, parry ult etc...

Okay back to tips: Get swifties unless their team is AP and CC (I'm talking Morg mid, Vi jg, Blitz support) And last but not least, don't focus him in team fights unless he dives backline

If that's the build order, id say no. Ravenous is core on her. Always get Tiamat first at least. CDR boots are sub par to swifties, tabis, or mercs in my opinion. That build seems like more tank and little damage, which was nerfed for Fiora.

not true, after the rework, darius can sustain a lot of her damage and darius' damage ramp up competes with fiora's damage output. Darius stat checks fiora hard with overall better base stats.

Also, positioning to deny fiora vitals is easy since darius' Q is a circular ability that allows movement during cast.

Finally, the ults. Stick to a wall and watch fiora try her hardest for that last vital.

I think what I'm really asking is, is hp in fact a better early start, after all? On someone like malphite

Starting cloth 4 and rushing cinder or giants belt? Or starting ruby 2 and rushing further hp?

Randuins, Sunfire, Deadmans, or Catalyst/Roa/RG for first full item vs him? What would help the best, to actually survive lane and hopefully get some farm...

hOrnn1 votes

Also chogath has sustain, and can silence darius and deal true dmg without stacks and gets hp for free.

Vekkna1 votes

I only play Zyra but I play her top lane secondary. She does quite well against Darius because she can control the wave, CS with plants when behind, poke with plants when even, self-peel with roots and vine lashers, and turn the tables on dives.

Rush Liandry's or Void Staff. If he tries to build Black Cleaver first, you will kill him every time your ult is up. If he rushes MR, you set him back from his dps core by at least a few thousand gold, and that gives you a huge team fight advantage heading into mid game.

Since her buffs, Illaoi is also a strong option. Basically, Darius is a lane bully and his players often reflexively engage at basically any opportunity. Champs that do well against him have some combination of disengage, counterengage, dps, and/or sustain. Like Illaoi, Riven, Teemo, Quinn, Swain, Kayle, Rumble.
