Let's link a system ostensibly about Mastery to an RNG System!

Because who says something called "Mastery" has to do with skill?...besides the dictionary

Seriously why do I need to PAY for a champion shard, and then PAY to unlock Mastery 6 & 7? Rather than...oh I don't know, just earn it through good play? And I mean just earn it. Earn!

I know some people will shoot this down and say "Oh it's only IP and Blue Essence, not like there's much else to use it for" And while I do appreciate the efforts to make Blue Essence not so much blue piss in the wind as a resource, this is just the most illogical way to do it. Same with making an IP sink, the efforts to make one is nice. But again why do we need to _buy _ Mastery 6 & 7!? Especially for how lackluster the rewards are it's just crusty fried bullshit and a massive cash grab in a flimsy disguise. People were asking for champion icons for rewards! And as usual a fantastic idea was totally ignored!

Why couldn't we just unlock 6 & 7 through skilled play? Just get so many S ranks? Riot you could have left it at that and 6 & 7 would have been just fine, great even! But no you simply can't take the most sensible course of action.

It's not like the old system was about skill either, simply frequency.

I never said it was, and in fact have described it more as "Champion Proficiency" With the introduction of 6 & 7 however the requirement to get an S Rank DOES have to do with skill...or at least it purports to anyway :P

I would be fine with getting 15 or 20 s ranks to not have to pay for it

MrWasjig1 votes

As would I, because it would require you to actually play well and have that be the only prerequisite. Even if it meant I'd never see beyond Level 5 because....Support T_T

Back to Back games last night. Even LOST one. Got S and S+ and got back to back Tokens. the only RNG is your performance lol

However, acquiring the essence is hard AF...

I think you misunderstand, I'm not calling the ranking RNG. What I am referring to is the fact that it is now forcibly linked to Hextech Crafting, a system that operates entirely upon random drops.

The only RNG is your understanding.

Gee yea screw the company for making money. DAMN THEIR HOPES OF PAYING THE RENT.

MrWasjig4 votes

You say it as if Riot is sorely hurting for cash. They're hardly a small company, get real. But for one that's always encouraging skill and "Mastery" this is particularly scummy.

Previously I would have said that Riot have implemented one of the best F2P Business Models out there. I'm feeling a little less inclined to say that with this obviously cash grab-y move that you would expect from someone like, EA or Ubisoft.

In fact I wouldn't be surprised if "Sell more Hextech Crates" wasn't on the list of reason why they've even bothered to implement Mastery Ranks 6 & 7.

Use your goddamn brain before making asinine comments.

billxx2 votes

of course it's the reason. The sole reason a company exists is to make money. People seem to be angered by this when they don't get free shit.

MrWasjig1 votes

I never said "They're not allowed to make money".

In fact if you actually read what I said, I've previously considered their F2P business model one of the best (and actually is STILL pretty good, Hextech bullshit notwithstanding). And if you've paid any attention you can clearly see Riot has previously avoided any kind of cash grab strats because nobody likes that bullshit.

Don't know why you think I'm angry at not getting free shit, you're clearly missing the entire point of this thread :P

Alright, mastery 6 and 7 don't matter. No one is going to think less of you if you don't have them. THEY ARE LITERALLY A COMPLETELY COSMETIC ADDITION.

Stumped.

Thanks for playing.

Let's ignore the system they will be adding soon to get blue essence for IP!

MrWasjig1 votes

Did you read anything in the OP? Because if you did, you'd realise that doesn't change a damn thing.

It's an ip sink and it makes blue essence not worthless. Additionally it imposes another restriction on getting higher ranks so that you only get to have high mastery on your mains and not on every random champion because it comes with an additional resource cost. This is a good thing.

MrWasjig1 votes

This is a good thing.

Yes it would be, if playing well was the only requirement. Not some arbitrary pay gate alongside it.

BlueNoize1 votes

Just on your IP sink comment, It is truly outrageous.

The IP sink they designed is to buy Champion Shards, Which the people who need an IP sink generally don't need the champions either...

So you are "sinking" your IP into something you don't need, most likely just to destroy what you buy, because RNG likely wont give you the champ you are looking for.

Am I the only one that finds this very strange?

All tied to "Mastery" of your champ....

BlueNoize1 votes

I really want an answer on this.

This is the number one argument for this crafting business being a good thing to have tied to Mastery.

Does no one else see the embarrassing redundancies in this sink to their IP they have been looking for?

its just an arbitrary gating mechanic to prevent people from getting mastery rank 7 on every one of their main champions in week 1.

a lot of people including me already have enough mastery points to be promoted far beyond lvl 7 on their mains. if they had introduced the new levels without adding this weird gating, id have had mastery 7, went "meh, noticed" and moved on with my life without feeling fulflled in any way.

dont get me wrong. its not really an accomplishment to get mastery 7 with the system thats in place now, and thats really weird. but the idea was probbaly to have it take a time investment.

you have to unlock mastery chests for your champions, collect champion shards and these tokens, yadda yadda, which will take a while for each individual champion.

MrWasjig1 votes

I'm fine with it having a time investment as well, but as I've already said many many times linking it to THIS is just the dumbest way they could have done it.

Flucksicle

-> Tencent bought out league. -> Asians love RNG in their games. -> RNG starts appearing in game heavily.

^this

It has been on my mind since I read the blue essence part.

I've played many a game ruined by RNG boxes, the slow creep here is scaring me.

Not saying it is terrible right now, but in other games, I let it slide off my back just to watch it whirlpool out of control.
