This could be such a nice active - and it has such nice tank stats. But at least in my eyes active and item simply don't fit together.
That's an active which a champion like Heimerdinger would like, not a tank. At the same time (being a tank) I would question what on earth I would want that active for.

If I recall the earlier explaination of the item, it's intended as a way for a tank to split push. Place that relatively close to the enemy tower and lead the charge. While you can't do much damage on your own, the Voidlings should be able to suplement your damage to towers without costing you defensives stats.
Sukishoo3 votesYeah it's intended to help tanks with split pushing, since they can often have issues with that. This allows them to have another force to help them if they get the chance to do that.

Sire Hippington1 votesIt's mostly a item for clearing minions cause the voidlings are squishy but deal good damage, Heimer doesn't really need help here. Also, banner off comand is the go-to item as heimer, granting cdr+ap and a minion tanking the tower while your turrets knock it down.
As a tank, you can simply built up a portal at your tower and it's save from pushing lanes and can withstand early splitpush, so you are free to roam and teamfight without totally loosing lanepresure

Banner is an Aegis upgrade now, not an AP item nor does it boost Heimer turret damage anymore. However, upgrading from Aegis allows it to synergize with his passive and high hp/5 regen fairly well plus you still get the bonus of minion tanking tower shots for your turrets.
Sire Hippington1 voteswhile banner builts from aegis, it still gives 60ap and 10%cdr, aswell as a tanky minion, which all helps heimer splitpushing(some tankiness/sustain doesn't hurt either)
It isn't as great as the old one since it lacks the aura, but still a great item if u plan on splitpushing
