Support Summoners these days! Soft, that's what they are!

You Support Summoners these days, with your free gold and special items and passive gold gain and whatnot. You have so much money to throw around that you take Morgana and Annie bot. Why, they're mages! They belong in mid! Less o'course your carry's taking mid, which they did back in my day. That's "A-D-C" in your crazy lingo, mind you. As though there were another kind of carry. "AP Carry"? What in the vast blackness of the world-devouring Void dimensions does that mean? Ha! Contradiction in terms. "AP Carry". What's next? You're gonna start wanting to be called "Support Carries"? Damn political correctitude, that's the problem. Next thing you know, you'll be demanding that we call tanks "Health Carries"!

Used to be that Supports didn't have two gold pieces to rub together. You'd see a Support with Boots of Speed, and you'd call 'em "fed". "She has boots at 20 minutes? That's a fed Janna alright," we'd say. Now you've got so much gold you don't know what to do with it. An embarrassment of riches, and believe you me, it's an embarrassment alright!

Y'see, the good old-fashioned Support Champions—

Taric Janna Soraka Sona

—yeah, them—they've all been shoved to the sidelines by Leona and Thresh. (The Solari and the Shadow Isles have Champions now, eh? What's next, a Champion from the Fyrone Flats? This modern inclusiveness nonsense will be the death of the League, you mark my words. This nonsense with Shurima has me so mad I don't even read the Herald anymore. Angries up the blood. Now, the JoJ, that was a real newspaper!) So where was I. Traditional supports. Right. They got real good at doing their thing with no gold, but now there's so much gold that all these other Champions are one-upping them right and left. Something should be done. Why, I ran into Summoner Morello the other day, from the Riotous Fists Clan, the one who's in charge of all the energy balancing runes on the Fields. And I gave him a piece of my mind! Sometimes those Rioter types, they can be squirrely. You've got to be persuasive. The best way is to tell them stories that don't go anywhere until they ask you to please just tell them what you want.

Soft! That's what you all are!

You know, the League of Legends used to be a place for tough-minded people who could make do with what they had in front of them. Not a fancy magical college for lazy aristocrats with good grades! Why, none of us thought the League would last more than a week before Demacia and Noxus tore it apart again. Practically a suicide mission, taking the Summoner's Oath in those days. And the stipend, you could hardly afford to eat on that! I see all you fancy younguns going to the Heart of Gold across the way from the Fields, buying your ThaumaKola cocktails and Bandle City Juiceboxes and fancy glowy elixirs. When I was your age, all you'd get was a past-its-prime Demacian ale or some Bilgewater rotgut with a toothpick-skewered slice of lime bouncing around on top like a seasick sailor clinging to driftwood! And we sure drank plenty of both in those days. Why, there was a High Councilor who came in one day, yellin' and yammerin' about that damn Jarvan III and Boram Darkwill, and what he'd like to do to the both of 'em, and we gots to drinking, and—

—where was I? Oh, that's right. So I used a teleport spell to go over to Mount Gargantuan, which is what they called Mount Targon in those days. I had an Elixir of Fortitude tied to my belt, which was the style at the time. There was still a lot of interference from the Rune Wars fallout in those days, and you took your life into your hands every time you tried a teleportation. I'd take a swig from my Elixir of Fortitude to steady the nerves before I started the invocation. I had one tied to my belt, y'see, because that was the style at the time.

Hey, this is Gameplay and Balance, cut it out with the lore stuff, Summoners don't even exist anymore

Well that's the kind of soft-headed thinking that I expect from you lot! HA! Too much Ionian philosophy in the curriculum these days. Back in my day, we Summoners knew we existed. Now you've got Summoners openly asking whether they truly "exist", or if they're just reflections in a mirror universe. I'll tell you, Reginald Ashram never would have stood for that kind of nonsense, make no mistake. Never should have let those crazy Ionians in. Not that I've got anything against Ionians, mind you. Terrible shame, that invasion. But Ionian professors at the Institute? No wonder you're all so damn philosophical and metaphysical. Most of you can't even cast a damn Revive spell, but you're worrying about whether or not you exist. Fah! We had real problems back in my day.

And so pampered. Take Deathfire Grasp, for example. Oh, boohoo, a few Summoners who clearly didn't have what it takes to be a Summoner went a little funny in the head after invoking it. And maybe there were a few minor stabbings and immolations. Well, they aren't around to get crazy anymore, eh? Problem solves itself! But no, this liberal nutjob Kolminye, she sends good ol' DFG to the Black Archives. Ha! I thought you were supposed to be protecting Runeterra from destruction, not worrying about idiot acolytes who shouldn't have passed their Judgments in the first place! Summoning is a hard job that calls for hard people. Pledging our lives to protect Runeterra from total destruction, getting in between Demacia and Noxus and what-not, and saying we weren't even going to use rune magic to do it—that's what I call HARD MODE. You've gotta be tough! While some Champion's grandstanding on the Fields, getting all the press, getting all the admiring crowds of young lords and ladies, taking some of 'em on a "tour of the Institute", if you catch my meaning, heh heh, while they're all doing that, why, a Summoner's more often than not waist-deep in mud in Kumungu trying to wrestle some crazy lich into a dispelling circle with no more than a null-magic mantle to keep the death curses off! That's how it used to be. We did the dirty work, and we didn't mind it, no-sir-ee! Even when we came back to the Institute with one arm in a sling and a case of thaumatoxic fever and found a line of Champions whining at us to do their homework, find some artifact or spell to help 'em raise six kinds of madness out in the rest of Valoran.

And these discussion boards! With the little arrow-runes that get all glowy when you look at 'em funny. Back in my day, we had one forum board, and the only sorting that happened was, you pulled one board out, and you wrote something on it, and you left it on top and walked off, so the next Summoner saw it first. And it worked fine! Now you think arrows are going to tell you what to read! HA! Taking orders from arrows. That'll be the day. Sure, there were little + and - sigils, but we didn't fuss about with them too much.

Support Summoners! The softest of the soft!

Used to be that Supports had to use their wits. And we did! We'd put wards damn near everywhere. Maphacks, we'd call 'em. Haha. There was a song, you know:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kamr4rZe_W0

Catchy tune! Not like this "Get Jinxed" nonsense you kids listen to these days. Warriors? HA! Real Warriors got assists with no items.

Now, don't you get me wrong. Supports needed more gold. We fought on those old forums, without the damn arrows everywhere, to get you new kids more gold. We need five goldstreams for five Champions, we said! Now you've all got more gold than you know what to do with.

Traditional Supports could use a buff, if you ask me!

Now, we all agreed at the time, if you add a fifth goldstream, well, you're going to have to buff traditional Supports. Or else you'll just have Annie going bot every match, or some kind of nonsense like that. And sure enough, that's what happened.

When's the last time you saw Soraka or Taric on the Fields, eh? No respect for the early Champions, from back in the old days. Just Leona and Thresh all the time. And you've got the Riotous Fists Clan, Meddler and that bunch, going on about ratios and itemization and that kind of modern nonsense.

And another thing—

—eh? What?

Hmmph. Looks like Leona needs some backup on the Fields. The irony isn't lost on me. Well, Summoner's Oath and all that. But just remember: you're all soft! SOFT!

I'm bumping this for the pure fact that such a fun to read post shouldn't die this fast.

I'm glad you liked it. I honestly think it's kind of stupid, but I had fun doing a Summoner Abe Simpson rant. I might polish it up and put it in The Summoner's Herald or something.

back in my day we walked everywhere. there weren't any gapclosers. we walked into lane and back uphill both ways in snow. you didn't get boots til level 15 because the minions were dying from the cold before you could kill them.

That's right! And then these modern Summoners complained about "hostile conditions" on the Fields, and there went that lovely winter Summoner's Rift. Griping about the cold, from a Summoner Corps that's supposed to be ready to teleport right into the heart of the Freljord to help the Frostguard slay ice monsters on a moment's notice! Never thought I'd see the day.

You ADCs have no respect for us Supports saving your behinds from tower dives and securing your kills. You want to get that Ezreal and no minions to take aggro and want to blame us cause we're running OOM and enemy jungler decides it's a perfect time to gank? Y'all need to learn some independence, go to other lanes and not have us babysit you and hear you cry if we accidentally take a CS here or there, huehue.

In all seriousness, I've seen Soraka played a lot, Sona's still popular, Janna's got an indirect buff from the coin getting one extra gold per minion. As for Taric, dude is still rare to see. Leona kind of fell out of style and Thresh lost out to Nautilus, I believe.

EDIT: On the fifth gold stream, pretty sure there are Masteries where you get 1 gold if you're near a minion that's been last hit as well as you get 3 gold for basic attacking an enemy champion cause I have them set for my support masteries and it it's amazing to just see numbers and afford a Sightstone in 7 minutes instead of 15.

You forgot a poll option: They wouldn't have allowed armored bears in the League! Zilean

Damn straight! No, Reggie Ashram would never have stood for that sort of thing. Why, next thing you know, someone will strap a bunch of pots and pans to their cat and demand that it be admitted as a Champion of the League! It's all going downhill, if you ask me. Take this Ekko, for example. He doesn't look old enough to clip the hedges on Summoner's Rift, much less represent League states on the Fields.

Who gave a bear armor, anyway? Aren't they dangerous enough? It's that sort of idle-minded tampering with nature that gets you torn apart by bulletproof bears.

So in short, make traditional supports viable in more positions than only support? While lso making them competitive in the support role?

I'm all for it.

Aside from the pure uselessness of this post here's a little clarification: First off Riot doesn't support "meta" in that you can't ban someone for oh say taking soraka top as an ADC. Second Support, mid hell any position can be filled by any champ, hence the no meta thing, but it's nice to see a rant about people not playing what you want them to play, your the toxicity the community needs to rid itself of.

Aeolian Melodies2 votes

They don't go as far as punishing you for not following it but they definitely endorse it because they balance and rework champions around the role people most frequently use them in with little to no regards for other "off the beaten path" builds.

lol, this post is so wrong...you do know you used to be able to build MULTIPLE GOLD ITEMS before riot noticed people were abusing this feature to buy step by step and selling the gold items they bought

the jungle also used to be so soft anyone could do it, now it's restricted to like level 6 and beyond for non-dedicated junglers and only two gold items can be had at the same time if the person wants to waste a space for Avarice blade along with their own gold item

bloodthirster also used to stack with itself instead of being a unique passive so people could have 600 AD and 100% life steal

there are very few gold gen items now and most of the champs with innate gold generation have been nerfed

utility masteries are much better now though

Janna still sees play, but that exception aside...

Traditional "support" champions can't exist in the game anymore. Even if they find some way to find their way in, they're almost certain to get heavy nerfs, such as what happened to Soraka. Taric never gets love. Sona is a different matter, she was still playable up until patch 4.13 of last year. It was the ~24 simultaneous nerfs she received in that one patch alone that made her unplayable and factually the weakest champion in the entire lane. Nami was the last to survive, but the release and repeated buffs of Bard have finally pushed her to the wayside. Hell, since patch 3.14 made Nami a superior carbon copy of Sona, Bard would've pushed both out of the game if 4.13 hadn't already done so.

Unless I'm mistaken, doesn't she still have one of the highest win rates in game?

I think there's a legitimate question of whether to maintain the "zero CS support" identity by giving them high base stats and reduced scaling, or to give them scaling comparable to the current meta supports. "Back in the day", these Champions were supports because they did better than others when completely deprived of gold. The recent changes have obviated the need for such Champions, at least to a considerable degree.

That said, you could keep some of that "gold-independent power" around. It would basically make them a less risky option: even if you get totally starved for gold, you'll be able to do reasonably well, at least compared to how most Champions would be in that situation. (The cost, of course, is that a high power floor means a low power ceiling: it would be broken to give a Champion both a lot of base damage/utility and the ability to get super-strong when fed.)

Pika3101 votes

Agreed, but as these champions currently stand they have both a low floor AND a low ceiling, whilst stronger champs like Thresh and Alistar have better utility. Particularly in Sona's case, you have low base stats and a completely lack of scaling on top of it and no notable utility to your name. It's like playing a Luvdisc in Pokemon: you begin useless and lack potential to evolve.

Sure, you can build Echo and Lich Bane, but then again you could do the same on anyone. Like say Bard for example and then you'd be on a champ with an actual usable kit. Why bother playing Taric, Sona, etc. and building these items when you could play a strong champion with the same item build and have better success?

I love playing Lux, Karma (mostly support for me because of all her cc), Thresh, Taric, Janna, Soraka in support role. These champions are all the supports I have. I can take others too as Lulu and Annie or even Amumu. Yep, I tried it by accident on a game and it works. CC is amazing. I don't like playing Blitzcrank and Bard for now because I am not so good with them.

But I think, as others mention, that you can play watever role you see fit in support roles or what else. Tough, don't take a Katerina support pls. A Katerina Adc would be so much better. ^^ Katerina/Garen bot lane maybe. Yep. XD

Try new things (practice it in normals before rank ehhhh ) and don't be upset about the changes that happened in the past. Play and have fun. ^^

Karma (mostly support for me because of all her cc)

A small slow that's blocked by butterflies. A slow that Fiddlesticks can walk out of (without boots). A root that is also walked out of.

Not saying support Karma is bad. but she not a great choice for CC.
