I'm not much of a Sona player but these changes make me cringe.

She's losing the part of her that is a support. The thing that really doesn't need changing. Stoping her from dealing too much damage or giving too much heal is one thing, but changing her kit this crazy is just sad to me.

First, her ability to give bonus damage is nerfed? No, not the damage itself, the way she is able to give the damage was nerfed, which is bad. Most don't usually just stand next to Sona, and this makes her more of a target than she should be. Having to get 100 meters closer to her ADC, for all of her kit, is just sad.

She's seen less play this season than most others, so whats with these changes?

I don't care if her shield was buffed. It was already fine as is. It was just giving the shield that was hard.

Also, her E is just extremely weak. Most champs at least give longer boosts in speed. She doesn't even give a base 20% boost in speed to allies. And worst of all, it falls off (which means you may get 0.5 seconds of a 16% to 20% (with the AP bonus) speed boost... if she is able to touch you with her aura).

Her aura already falls off (to me) very fast. You don't have that long to really get to an ally and give them that one boost in AD. You don't actually have an easy time hitting an enemy with your basic attacks to either reduce their damage or slow them.

Its true, Sona has a mother load of things in her kit... but does she really need to be treated like this? Her heal isn't that strong, and since shields only pop on an ally once if in her aura, then I don't agree with the reduced size change. This is killing Support Sona and is possibly going to force her into a more aggressive Champion. I never see anyone take Sona and not play defensively. They don't even give buffs to their allies. They basically spam the Q because of its attack range. The heal and speed boost as I've said are not handy. I'd rather pick Bard, Janna, or Nami. At least they give better boosts. At least they feel like their supporting. I don't want Sona to gain a boost in how much damage she gives allies, I don't want her to have a super strong heal, and I do not want her to speed allies from one place to another. But I do want her Q aura range to be as is but the CD change can stay, I'd rather her heals AP ratio brought up from 20-40% to 40-60% because the base heal itself is sad and doesn't do much (also, if I heal more based on missing health, then I should be allowed to heal at least over 50% of my AP), and her E could use more time so why not add this, Sona gains speed for 1.5 seconds and gives allies a boost in speed for 1 second, she can gain more time for (+1 second for every 200 AP). The bonus boost she gets on her ultimate should give her +5/7/9% to allies (for a total of possible 25% base bonus MS to allies).

I hope I don't make anyone mad with this post.

These changes are in line with the feedback Riot is receiving about Sona.

I just think it's dumb feedback. Players naturally underestimate the impact of her auras and claim they aren't doing anything despite Sona's winrate indicating otherwise. Riot just needs to accept that aura gameplay will forever feel unimpactful and let players who don't appreciate that power whine about how a champion that doesn't fit them continues to not fit them.

I'll repost my comment to another Sona thread.

"Roughly 50 games on Sona here...

The aura changes aren't that big of a deal. Another 100 units isn't going to break Sona. Brand and AoE damage was already an issue for Sona which won't be amplified by a hundred less units.

The Q cooldown changes are no big deal. Less Q spam is fine at ranks 1 & 2. Honestly, that's when her Q is the weakest and riskiest to use in harass.

The W change puts her in stronger contention with the other Shield Supports. She can't compete with Karma in team shielding, but it does strengthen her late game presence. Honestly, I think they should just buff her shield more and drop the heal entirely. It's this healing aspect that is keeping her from being a stronger choice in shielding supports.

Her E change is a huge buff for herself, even with the loss of 2/4/6% with Crescendo rank. A level 18 Sona was getting 23% + 7.5% per 100 AP, which is now 50% + 8% per 100 AP. A movespeed Sona with EyeWatchers/Ludens/LichBane/Ardent/Swift/Zrot will be nigh impossible to catch. You better one shot or stun her, as you are not chasing that 3 second bonus on an 8 second cooldown.

As for her allies, the E change is deceptive. At level 18, she was tagging allies with 20% + 3.5% per 100 AP. It's now a flat 16% + 5% per 100 AP. That may look like a nerf, but even a Cheerleader Sona that builds only 200 AP would have been 27% old and 26% new. AP Sona (300+) easily turns this into a buff."

Quoting myself is the first step to insanity.

I still think her W is weak, and I understand why it is weak.

People complain about Sona just having to build damage...so Riot buffs ap Sona?

"Highly experimental"

Honestly, as a level 5 Mastery Sona, I'm flat out DISGUSTED with this. The GW changes are already going to hurt Support Sona, and then Riot's pushing this on us. Personally, I wasn't too much of a fan of her update, but I learned to live with it. My main issue is that they're not compensating much outside of the W shield buff and the E movespeed buff. Is Sona THAT OPPRESSIVE of a support compared to someone like Tahm or Soraka to warrant this? I'm going to break this down by the skills:

Q: Shorter aura range, higher CD: This wasn't needed. If the Sona's too aggressive with her Qs, her mana runs out like water through a sieve. Now, you're taking Sona from the premiere poke support (Something Riot even AGREED was her identity), to "Why don't I take Nami/Annie/Brand/Vel instead?"

W: Shorter aura range, higher shield base: I like the shield base buff, not the range nerf. This is Sona's ONLY useful non-ult utility, and like her Q, she suffers from mana depletion if she's forced to W repeatedly to save her ADC. Meanwhile Soraka can heal her ADC back up to full, then Q repeatedly to get her health back. If you want to hit healing supports, hit Soraka/Lulu/Janna/Nami before looking at Sona. This, plus the GW changes more or less spell the death of Support Sona. Remember what happened when Soraka and Janna were forced out of their role and went mid? Do you SERIOUSLY want to force Sona mid?

E: Shorter aura range, higher base movespeed: Okay, the shorter aura range is REALLY not needed. This is Sona's only pre-6 escape or catch-up method, and reducing its range decreases the likelyhood that she'll be able to get her ADC in the aura as well. For immobile ADCs like Ashe, this is the thing that will likely get them killed when the enemy Zed decides to pop bot lane for a quick double-kill.

R: Movespeed buff on E removed: She might not need this as much with the base buff on her E, but she still needs this. She loses her ability to roam and ward and then get back before her ADC gets into too much trouble, forcing her to stick with her ADC at all times. And, if she's forced to try to run, she's now slower, and may be even forced to ult to ensure her safety.

This is something that doesn't need to happen. I think this came about due to a Rioter on the balance team running into Sona in ARAM and getting his ass beat, then deciding to gut her in response to his hurt feelings (Which highlights the balance issues in ARAM itself, not issues with the champ).

Riot, you already changed her identity once. Then you proceeded to heavily nerf her over the next few patches before forgetting about her. The nerfs forced her to build pretty much pure AP with no utility just to compensate, and then you throw this at us. This isn't balancing. This is a flat out Olafing.

tl,dr: Don't nerf her aura range, and don't take the movespeed buff off her ulti.

You do realize this whole thing is in response to the ever-constant whining of Sona players, right?

He's not trying to buff her overall because Riot feels Sona is in a good place power wise.

Ablast63 votes

But the thing is that this fixes none of her problems and generally feels like an overall nerf, just like her rework. But it's all experimental, so it likely won't go live.

SaltyKracka1 votes

Most of what it's apparently supposed to fix is the "oh Sona's so immobile and squishy and E's so incredibly useless!" In exchange for lowering her early poking power and making her auras harder to use.

I don't particularly think it's the right direction myself, but it's important to understand what Riot is actually trying to do.

Devack The Holy1 votes

The thing is though, Sona is THE aura champ. That's her identity. Lowering the range on her Auras feels like they're trying to strip her of her identity.

Athenes Lulu1 votes

Aura champs, in general, shouldn't exist. It literally meant "pick x to win" in a PvP environment, as well as the definition of "stat checking". However, aura champs that required timing and getting in the right range is okay.

That nerf didn't "strip" her identity, it only made it more difficult to time things right.

Devack The Holy1 votes

The Sona rework was "experimental", too... Look what happened.

Ablast61 votes

Well, unlike Fearless, Gypsylord mains support, not Anti-Sona crap

Devack The Holy1 votes

She is. This is going to kill that.

Anihaku3 votes

Agreed, these are clearly AWFUL "experimental changes" for Sona IMO. Luckily this is just the PBE and we can see what happens from here.

Riot pls don't ruin my main any farther than you have already. I still have faith in you guys :D

It's like they don't think the GW change will have much impact on healers xD [slayer-jinx-unamused]

Devack The Holy1 votes

Like I said, if they want to hit healing supports hard, there's better targets.

Looking squarely at you, Soraka...

Athenes Lulu2 votes

All I'm seeing is people not knowing what's called timing buffs and then complain that she "sucks".

Yeah, yeah, range nerf is a range nerf, -100 units isn't much when you're pretty much standing next to your allies anyways. But let's take a look at the other changes:

Her Q is changed in a way so that her worst counters can actually have breathing room in favor of more impact later on. Her heals are far from shit, though I can see why people think of it that way. The shield buff is more of a plus, if anything, especially later game. Her E is finally not shitty anymore.

Ablast61 votes

I don't see how it "kills" support Sona. If anything the Q CD kills Mid Sona.

Mid Sona was never alive.

Ablast61 votes

I'd say otherwise, it's discussed a decent amount in the Sona Discord

Long Story short, there should be NO "supports", just champs that have more utility than most, and buy support items to benefit the bot laner and trade off scaling on their abilities in order to buy these items.

The epitomy of balance for support.
