Congrats! You just hit 30, and you're ready to play ranked! Here's some helpful tips.

Don't. You are still garbage at this game. Some of you are thinking 'No way I think I'm pretty good.' You're not. You are bad.

You are grossly underestimating the skill floor, knowledge, and game sense that League requires. Do yourself a favor and play norms.

For a long time.

Because you're still bad. And likely will be for awhile.

No way!You can also learn how to play half of champion's list in ranked games.

Norms actually do learn you a whole lot of things. And norms have a mmr of their own, it is a good checking of what your skill can get you to. As a mostly norm player, I knew I could easily go into ranked when I was matched consistently with people above my league in norms (checking lolnexus or sthg). And that's why without doing a lot of rankeds at all ( I gotta have 5-10 times more normals than ranked) I got into diamond without much problems.

Ahristocats9 votes

normal games don't have a competitive environment, then this is subjective in my norms no one gives a fuck about the game

ranked games will always be superior to teach you the game, this OP is bullshit, i learned by playing ranked games in season 2 i played 400 or 600 ranked games with like 48% win rate, and i still learned and then climbed and climbed at the end of season 3 i ended up diamond 1

Ralanr11 votes

Norms with high ranking MMR probably have a smaller to zero competitive environment because there are no consequences to losing. So you'll probably see people fuck around more (whenever I go into customs with high ranked friends, they usually do builds like AD thresh because they are just trying to have fun).

In lower elo norms are pretty good for learning and practicing champions against human opponents. Some people fuck around, but it's not always the case.

Though that's true at the beginning, there are 'tryhards' everywhere. And since there's a mmr too in normal games, the competitive environment starts appearing if you win enough games.

Spoofghoul3 votes

uhu yea people totally aren't ever being competetive in normals

please. . .

the OP is right, make sure you get at least high silver mmr in norms before going into ranked so you have an easier time climbing out of the shithole that is bronze in your ranked games

don't wanna get stuck in the bronze luck treadmill of hell

50000000000000007 votes

You can still learn the game in normals. The example I always use is learning map awareness as Nunu jungle. I see enemy jungler, I take all his camps, place deep wards, and keep my eyes on the map.

Just after like 3 games, my map awareness improved by a ton, and that's all from playing normals.

You'd certainly not learn much if your primary goal is to have fun, but you can still learn in a non-competitive environment if you're trying to learn.

ArkVeil1 votes

I'll agree ranked games are superior to learning the game, however as someone who's never been in Bronze, I would like to state I spent a long time in normals before playing ranked. Plus, that first game playing ranked and then getting thrashed can tilt someone for a lifetime.

In the end, it's up to the player whether they want to rank quickly or take their time. Either way seems to work.

Edit: Actually, thinking about it, I would say Ranked is superior for learning Macro skills or champion matchups (especially against the FOTM ops), but normals are a safe area to practice PVP mechanics with champions you're not familiar with. I wouldn't dare play Zed against another player in ranked, atm.

Sun Wu Ryuumoku2 votes

Normal is good to be used to a champ, then u go in ranked to learn matchup and climb.

Flitchee2 votes

Normals are a place to practice champion mechanics, as people won't take macro game seriously in the slightest.

Nonsense!

All you need for Ranked is basic understanding of the game alongside 2-3 Full Runepages and 3-4 Champions you don't completely suck with. At Level 30 you usually had those capeabilitys (since they halved the required EXP for 30 I'm not entirely sure about this right now, but the original statement remains.)

I started Ranked the second I got my 16th Champion. Which took some time because I focused my early IPs on Runes and expensive Champions like Brand because I simply didn't know about the restrictions due to the Pick/Bann system.

So yeah - I started into ranked fast, have seen the Pick/Bann system the first time, had now idea about lane management or w/e and guess what.. I won games! Simply because I had a tiny bit of talent (like hitting Brand Ws!)

Because that's litterally all you'll ever need to win games in at 1200MMR!

I signed up for League mid Season 2 and ended up High Silver at the end of the Season... I wish anyone would have told me I get the gold cup with just 2-3 more wins... q.q x'D

So did it hurt me starting into ranked that fast??? I peaked at Dia 3 in Season 5 despite a lack of time due to study and RL in general! So obviously not!

So my iteration:

Congrats! You just hit 30, and you're ready to play ranked! Here's some helpful tips:

  • JUST DO IT! It's not so special! Just 9 other guys playing the game just like you do! Don't be scared, but don't expect to much. Play and learn! Watch the more experienced Teammates and if you loose, don't get mad - just look at the game once more and try to figure out what went wrong! That's how you learn the most!

For another perspective of this post, you ended up Silver 1 or Silver 2 in Season 2, and then 3 seasons later, you hit Diamond 3. That's not a reason to start ranked right away, if you're/they're gonna hit Diamond 3 years later.

Titanium701 votes

What else do you want?

I jumped into Ranked the second I could. I won games. - what else is important?

That's literally all that counts. At 30 you're supossed to have a skilllevel equaling 1200MMR. Obviously I, and alot of others, had this skill level. So why should I play 500 normals to improve for 100-200 points if I can just jump into rank and make the same progress 50 games in?

Fegone9 votes

No, don't listen to OP. Play ranked. Worst case you're landing in Bronze and you get a FREE icon at the end of the season. Best case if you don't play ranked? You get no icon.

Or you can, but don't expect good results at first unless you have a history of either learning games very quickly or experience in MOBA games.

If wanting to get a certain rank is your goal, then you're gonna have a bad time.

Nickfer25104 votes

You're talking like people that already play ranked know how to play lol

Votable Jester4 votes

OP is 100% right.

I continued to play normals (draft mode) for months after reaching level 30. When I finally did play ranked, I placed into Silver 5. After that I had high enough of a win% that I skipped S4 into S3 and then skipped S2 into S1. Only in my promos to Gold did I finally not win in one series. I did win in my second though. Within just a couple weeks of playing ranked, I was in Gold.

I attribute that to not playing Ranked until I was ready. Otherwise I would have had to climb through many more ranks on my way, and had to deal with far worse (bronze) teammates along the way.

Magearna2 votes

I agree with this. Had a friend tell me the same thing. "Don't play till you have 300+ normal wins." Took his advice, got placed in S3 and got G5 in my first season. While the friends I told the same thing who didn't listen got placed bronze and admittedly regretted not taking my advice (and was stuck for a long time).

Of course everyone learns differently but: would you rather practice, get better, and be put with slightly better teammates or not practice, tank your own MMR, and have to try to climb with 4 teammates who aren't on the same level as you by the time you actually do learn?

Toastersaot2 votes

You probably want to play the game in normals mode until you have enough IP to buy a 2-3 pages of runes. This is pretty important, since runes can provide something like 1400 gold in stats.

Errastas2 votes

Played 1500 normals before I even tried ranked, S3 was my first season and ended up placing gold

Sun Wu Ryuumoku2 votes

1500 its too much

Not saying play 1500, just that's the amount I played before I even realized there was a ranked option

ppl learn differently i learned by duoing with my buddy in ait who was plat he helped me get to s1. from there when i went to germany and eune i kinda just jumped to gold 3 and got stuck there now im gold 3 and close to skipping divisions. ppl learn differently

RookPusher2 votes

I don't like that advice.

Here's my 2 cents: tank your placements. Get to the B5, then play ranked until your hearts content. its the best way to learn, and the least harmful to the greater ecosystem.

Tiddy Twister2 votes

So how good are you required to be before you play ranked? Should we make it so that no one should play ranked until they're diamond tier? Being "bad" doesn't bar you from playing ranked. That's what bronze is for.

Gregor Gysi2 votes

I'm pretty sure that there are plenty fresh lvl 30 players who are easily silver/gold+ so why wouldn't they just start ranking? There are still people worse than them and getting a bad rank early doesn't matter that much. Also, what's up with that "you're bad" sentiment. You've been silver despite playing for 3 years so you aren't exactly the one who should tell people to get gud.

Laz19732 votes

Or. . .

Play yi, farm farm farm until level 11, and know what "R" and "Q" do. Don't fight anyone, ever, until you see someone with about 20% health. Then ks, ks, ks for the win!

OR. . .

Play a nice solid support champ, like maybe Sona or Braum, and tell your bot lane you are just starting out in ranked. They will promptly all-in for no reason at all, die a horrible death, and blame you. In short, you will be JUST LIKE EVERY AUTOFILL SUPPORT IN EVERY GAME, EVER.

Don't sweat it.

PureSilvrr1 votes

I love autofill supports, Mainly because I play support :)

Bard Blyat Bard2 votes

This thread is wrong on all levels, but I am not surprised it gets upvoted. In doubt, the thread creator will talk bullshit about "it's just sarcasm".

But fine.

  1. The league system is there to exactly deal with that problem. People think they are challenger level and see it like: (BRONZE)<------>(CHALLENGER) And they are somewhere at Silver 5. So they think they are at 10~15% of their goal/possible skills.

If they accept they are more: (BRONZE)<------>(GOLD) They would realize with Silver, they are exactly in the middle of their actual skill.

And this happens no matter what level, the normal game MMR also works this way. But that does not mean you are not supposed to play ranked. That's like saying the local soccer club is crying all day rivers of tears because they "just" won agains the neighbour village's soccer team and not against Madrid or Brazil (hehe, 7-1... Whatever!). Or that every fifth league race driver is not driving for MERCEDES next to Hamilton.

Do not play Normals. Go to Ranked and leave normals alone. People who desire to play ranked are usual toxic assholes that need to be put where they are supposed to be: Amonst other ranked players.

MissCha0s1 votes

I want to start rank games soon but kinda scared. My biggest problem, I feel like I can't say I have a main role, I basically play whatever role I'm in the mood to play in which means I feel like I don't excel at any main role. I guess if I had to choose, right now I've really been into playing the role of support, so I guess you can say that's the role I've spent the most time in lately. But I don't know if support is the right role to play as for my first rank games. Before my support craze, I was really into adc, with sivir. but I've been playing so much support, that I haven't played her in awhile, which I'm fine with cause I still only want to play support right now. But I don't know if I should just suck it up, play sivir just so I can get back any practice and skill back, and then when I feel ready just go into rank with adc or if I'll be fine going into rank as support.

Sure there's also option of going in as mage supports but I've always preferred and been better with normal supports such as soraka, janna, and now alistar.

Sun Wu Ryuumoku2 votes

Soraka and Janna are safe pick, its easy to climb with them. Alistar depend of the meta... Anyway u just need to choose 2 main role, 2 chars per role.

Niyumi1 votes

You're grossly overestimating the skill floor, knowledge and game sense that this game requires. Relative to just about any MMO, this game is next level braindead.

I hit 30, immediately jumped into ranked, and got placed S1 with a 9-1 placement series. My first ranked game ever, I played against a plat Azir main with over 3k games on Azir as Nidalee. Absolutely stomped him.

So... just because it's too hard for you doesn't mean that people who actually have a brain have to spend years practicing one of the easiest games there are.

Cocho1 votes

Sounds like you played other mobas before league.

League was the 1st game I played on PC. When I hit level 30 i went to ranked and got bronze 5 lol.

Gotta think about that guy who's never played a moba before. Level 1 - 30 isn't that much time, especially since you're also against new players most of the time.
