Why lethality is strong (with math)

I'm going to cut to the chase this is current lethality vs old armor pen that riot claimed was too good.

Old armor pen @ lvl 1 with precision, marks, and quints

22.5

Current Lethality @ lvl 1 with the same

32.5 x 60% base + 2.22% for lvl 1 target = 20.22

Hopefully you already see where this is going...

Old armor pen @ lvl 7 with a item 3142

44.3

Current Lethality @ lvl 7 with a item 3142

52.5 x 75.56% for lvl 7 target = 39.67

Old armor pen @ lvl 11 with item 3142 item 3147

55.5

Current Lethality @ lvl 11 with item 3142 item 3147

67.5 x 84.44% for lvl 11 target = 56.99

As you can see the new lethality out scales the old armor pen with 2 items, while losing next to none early on in the game. There really is no reason this should be the case as it makes the 2 item powerspike too strong. Not to mention you can ride this power into the late game for damage vs squishies thanks to the scaling nature of lethality.

I think you're mistaken on what precision does. It give you 8.5 lethality, it doesn't scale with level at all. Magic pen you get from it does. at level 1, you would have 32.5. at level 7 with item 3142 you would have 52.5 at level 11 with item 3142 item 3147 you would have 67.5.

Its late and I didn't want to sign on league, the wiki had the scaling attached to both :P

I updated the op and thanks for the catch.

yeah, either way your point still stands. I'm sure they're probably tried it before, but meeting in the middle of where things were before (40% scaling to 100%) and where they are now (60% scaling to 100%) at 50% scaling upwards might be a bit more balanced.

17.1 @ lvl 1

36.46 @ lvl 7

54.38 @ lvl 11

Takes a small hit early and is very slightly worse at 11, this would be a nice median number I think.
