The State of Akali, A rework Is Mandatory

Akali....

Introduction

Akali to put things simple is.

The cruddy version of Diana. However things were not always like this, players use to look at both champions as equals and with this debate in my mind.

Do I want a Ap assassin who is sorta tanky but lacks burst, but will survive a team fight, or do i want someone with nod defensive skills excluding her spell vamp but huge burst?

At the moment I would say we have three Ap assassins who have this type of play style, feel free to add to the list if you feel like it.

Ekko Diana Katarina Akali

Four people who can 100 to zero people really quick that do something somewhat similar , but have their own unique tricks that make them different.

Ekko-provides the most CC out of all of them but has the least ammount of burst Diana-Amazeing burst, mediocore cc, solid defensive play options Katarina-God like burst, no defensive options except for shunpo, lack of mobility excludeing shunpo, easy to run from Akali- Supposed to have god like burst, but no defensive or cc options at all

Now let us move onto Akali, Akali use to be the queen of finding a squishy bursting him down, then to regen off of spellvamp, to then find a new target, kill that target, and I think you see where im going here. Now the only time she ever does it is when she gets hella fed, and tbh any champion is scary when hella fed.

Akali suffered MAJOR nerfs, one of the most devastating nerfs was the fact her E Crescent Slash no long procs her q mark of the assassin for bonus damage. I get why riot did this, but fact is, since they did this, akali has seen almost no play, and her burst potential was greatly lowered.

THE COMPETITION AKALI FACES AMONG HER COLLEGES OF NINJAS

Why has she seen no play? Well assassin mains can answer this, why the hell would you pick Akali over any assassin at the moment? Let's make a list of the ones I have not mentioned.

Zed-Can be a great lane bully with his clone shadow slash combo, a amazing roamer who can jump onto a target with ease with his ult, great split pusher for he has remarkable wave clear

Ahri-can edit her build to a multiple type of play styles, offers a stun type attack with her charm, amazing for creating picks, a remarkable roamer with amazing chase with her charges. Safer charges for it works as a skill shot and not as a auto lock which allows you the freedom of where you want to be. Solid lane bully with Q and fox fire

LeBlanc- Can lane bully with her Q W combo, reliable poke, offers soft to major cc with her chains with the fact she can cast two in a single team fight to snare multiple targets. Once fed is a huge burst type character. Can get out of bad situations with ease

Fizz-Stupidly mobile, can counter many major ults through playful trickster (built in toolkit zhonyas), if fed as a ap assassin can 100 to zero with ease with a safe way to get in and out, offers soft cc through his ult, also a solid split pusher with his good wave clear and one v one ability.

Kassadin-With his ult and built in slow is stupidly hard to get away from, once fed can create easy picks to get in and out

Yasuo-Possibly the most unique assassin out of all of them through the fact his toolkit offers major cc through his Tornado and ult, very mobility, remarkable split pusher, rewards you highly if you build a comp around him.

So with these amazing picks...I just see zero reason in why you would chose akali over any of them....

**What is she suppose to be? What made her unique? **

So with that made clear that Akali is clearly the worse assassin out of all of them right now, the real question becomes, what was Akali suppose to be, what were her pros, what were her cons?

Akali as stated earlier, from what I have seen in both pro play and casual play was suppose to be a bad ass kunochi who could jump onto a target, burst them down in a few seconds, heal off her spell vamp to then select a new target and jump onto them. She was a champion that was suppose to make the enemy team panic in team fights who was suppose to find someone, isolate them in a one v one situation while your team dukes it out four v four, akali is then suppose to kill the person she isolated, to then jump onto the next target. She was never suppose to 100 to 0 someone from what I saw, she was suppose to be a Isolator who caused great panic and disruption in team fights.

For when Akali jumps on your carry you are given two options, protect your carry, or let them fend for themselves, however with how Akali plays, your carry more then likely ran very far away from you, as she isolates them in a area very far away from the actual team fight. Basically Akalis game in her prime was all about creating chaos and havoc, and in her prime she did this better then any assassin. However since the nerfs to her damage output she is no longer capable of doing that.

Also..she was nerfed multiple times in recent patches in ways no one noticed

THE UNINTENTIONAL AKALI NERFS

1-global nerf to all AP items 2-The increase in Price to Zhonyas 3-Buffs toward tanks 4-Buffs toward anyone who is AD

1-so she allready experienced nerfs toward her damage in her own toolkit but now the items she needs to help her burst people down also got nerfed, this means even less damage output 2-Her only real defensive option, with it being so costly now, it takes her so long to hit that power spike 3- She was never meant to kill tanks, but now they are even harder to kill 4-The very people she is suppose to assassinate/Isolate can now almost always out trade her in just seconds, if she jumps onto a lucian he is just gonna laugh and shoot her brains out.

THE FLAWS IN HER TOOLKIT ITSELF

1-No defensive play 2-No CC at all besides her stelath ability with a very soft slow 3-obscenely large energy costs to the point you cant even get off your second, third charges sometimes because you have no energy to even do it 4-Unreliable burst because it is so item dependent...for items that were nerfed... 5-Gets easily hard core lane bullied pre 6 by good players to the point she can barely even farm 6-no wave clear in the slightest, so once shes bullied, safe turret farming isn't even a option

TLDR, The Conclusion

Akali is a champion who has suffered heavy nerfs for what use to be justifiable reasons, but as time went further and further she simply became the worse mid lane/top lane assassin pick in the game to the point the only people who play her are the legitmate akali fans themselves

A rework is a must and what I hope that rework does is add in abilities that make her into someone who can find a target, isolate them, who can then turn that into huge team fight chaos.

uh yeah i took the time to read and im pretty sure yasuo is never played as an assassin...

and i disagree with your views on many things...

while it may be true that akali is not in meta atm, she is strong.

you only need one item and u can shit on eveyone, the hextech gunblade

there are many plays that are low risk and high rewards that i have pulled off many times and made the other team wonder if she was in meta again.

things like ult into tower with q proc on and e then ult back away

or putting w in a bush by the baron pit, flashing over to get a kill, then ulting back over and killing again

however u do contain valid points as that her energy costs are MASSIVE (along with zed and shen)

she has very little defense and up to no cc

TL;DR :conculsion is that a buff i would recommend is more base energy, stronger w slow percentage, q slows (if the w slow is not buffed), ult cooldown

actuallly nerfed (in my opinion), different AP ratios and maybe possible AD scalings added too so u dont die to someone like a veigar god, and base spell vamp in her e (jjust a little like 3%)

Glad you took the time to read this to decide on what you agree and disagree with, wont get into the yasuo debate since this is about akali.

Honestly I don't see why you see Akali as a strong pick right now, this is a meta that should be good for her, assassins are popular again in both the top and mid lane. So why is it Akali isn't comeing back?

To go back to my topic, she does her job poorly, which makes her a weak champion.

I do agree that she is weaker but honestly she is just a waiting game being played in league.

all the assasins need to wait for level 6 before they can literally 100 - 0 anyone right?

well with akali, you need to wait for level 6 and gunblade

also that comes slower because of her squishy ass and her inability to farm at all because of no damage

while she is weak, i honestly dont think she is impossible to carry with

i have mentioned the buffs i would add above

(on a side not i may not be the best player in the world but i have gotten first bloods with akali pre level 6 so what you are saying is actually not sooooo tru but only partially true

quite honestly I feel any kill you get with Akali pre six, is simply the enemy opponent being bad, no offense. she is so easy to bully if you have even the smallest form of range in your toolkit, She is the gangplank of mid laners in some ways, amazing at punishing melees, but will get smashed by anyone with range. Idk my main issue with akali as of late is she either smashes in lane, or gets smashed, their is so rarely a health balance.

lol no i just went troll runes as much as i could find and i killed him at levl 5 backed like 3 tiems so i had more items than him/her

i just kinda smashed them because they were at half health

Honestly, most assassins just never left. I feel like rengar fizz diana ekko and zed have all been picked consistently this past year. Akali isn't coming back because her kit is insanely toxic and doesn't flow well at all. Sadly akali players will have to wait until riot tackles akali or assassins as a whole. Her damage isnt a problem and i think you stating that her ap items got nerfed is an issue with ap champs in general not akali. She's still playable just not fun for either side and theres always better options

I feel like she is in a good spot right now but i think riot could change her escape since w is not that good since most people know its mechanic and r is really just for sticking on to your target.

this could be fixed by giving her a reset like kata or a shield like ekko or diana

She will get one.

[How to buff Akali] Make Auto Attack reset on Q and R No more variable distance from target after ulting.

While yes this would be nice, the problem and fact would still go into that a Zed, talon, majority of mages could hard bully you unless you do a legitmate out play.

Why is a rework mandatory? Please answer that. Akali is in a good state right now, she can do very well and can be dealt with and has counterplay so she is not someone like Yorick or old Poppy.

She could use a few minor tweaks, such as the removal of cast time on her shroud to truly make her feel like a ninja.

She has waveclear with her E as well as sunfire cape. It's not that bad.

Please note a rework can mean anything from a full sion, to a minor shen to even as something as small as what they did for caitlyn with her charges on traps.

I tend to afk farm the jungle til 6. she duels pretty well against most invading junglers and has decent disengage if she can't win

Akali is AP-melee hypercarry. Her burst isn't suppose to be as high as other assassins. She has semi-combos which she pulls off multiple times meaning her damage is a relevant threat with low downtime unless she dies. Therefore she is the DPS queen of 'assassins'. And that's Akali's identity. Making her another generic 100-0 burst assassin would completely destroy that.

It was a mistake for Riot to give Akali's E to proc Q in the first place since Jayce Patch. She already has counterplay issues because Q and R cannot be dodged, so having a more strict method to proc Q via AA is the best counterplay there is to an ultimate you cannot out-run. Simply put, an AA has much more counterplay than an PBAoE given Akali's current kit.

She is already confirmed to getting a kit update. Not a full reboot, but refreshing her abilites to fulfil her fantasy better but with counterplay added. But that is not coming anytime soon, end of 2016 if lucky.

Meta always changes, and that more or less always makes certain champions weaker if it doesn't favours them. That doesn't warrant those champions getting buffs.

As for the flaws you have mentioned:

  1. I love Akali as an offensive damage dealing champion, so I don't care about any defensive play. What makes Akali enjoyable for me, is that she trades off any defensive capabilities for raw offensive power. That's who Akali is.
  2. Given the amount of raw offensive power she has, she doesn't need CC. Pure damage dealers are not allowed to have CC.
  3. What do you mean by this? Her dashes are on an ammo system, and they are free. They do not cost energy. Akali also, has the easiest time with energy management out of all of the energy users. Tip: You are not suppose to spam E.
  4. Nothing is unreliable about damage that cannot be avoided. Q + R --> AA. Items being nerfed affects other AP champions as well, not only Akali. Balance is not in a vacuum.
  5. This has always been the case. Even before the nerfs. This is something Akali mains know how to deal with, or reduce greatly. She's not a champion that is kind for newer players to pick up.
  6. Since buffing E to have a much lower cooldown per level up, Akali has one of the best waveclearing tools in the game by far. Farming is effortless on Akali.

Source: Akali-only main since 2011, and not once throughout that time, I haven't won atleast half of my games as Akali.
