One of the major reasons people don't play support; Zero credit

Dominick Destine··106 votes·5,285 views

So I just played a game as Braum with an MF ADC; I defended MF very successfully and getting between MF and the enemy team allowed her ult to utterly decimate the opposing team.

However, at the end of the game everyone was like "ZMOG such a good MF" and "Those were some great ults MF!" completely disregarding the fact that I setup her ult with my ult and defense of MF every single time. Basically what I'm saying is it's a lot more rewarding to play sightstoneless Annie Brand Zyra and utterly violate the enemy team directly than do it by proxy with Braum and be completely unrecognized by either enemy or ally. It sucks and is very demotivating.

You will literally spoon feed an adc all his kills then the one time he dies it's
"GG noob support"

Sounds like junglers back in seasons 2 and 3. Winning lane? You're a god! Losing lane? Blame the jungler!

Ariel the Cruel4 votes

That's still the case.

It's always the jungler's fault. Always blame the support.

Squey1 votes

And that blame is becoming more and more legit. Malzahar support getting sightstone at 20 min in after going 0-8 due to no vision. And if his team carries him he will build full damage over useful support items. Actual Supports are becoming more and more rare

Ariel the Cruel2 votes

Went top a few times. Bot lane went double assassin. So I went ADC. Accused of trolling. Support went full damage Brand. So I built SS, locket, and redemption on Nautalus. Accused of trolling. Support went MF, jungle tanked. I went Soraka top. Accused of trolling.

I went mid a few times. I first picked Lissandra, nobody went tank. I built tank. Accused of trolling. Top went Jax, bot went Ashe, enemy was Zed. I picked Galio. Accused of trolling. ADC died once, Sona took over lane and stole CS. I (Oriana) acted as primary support for our starved ADC in mid game. Accused of being useless.

I went ADC once. No tanks, support Soraka, enemy Akali and Rengar. I picked Kennen. Accused of trolling.

I never go jungle if I can avoid it. Elder lizard still laughs at me when I try.

I don't know why I ever bother not going support. Nobody else ever gives two damns about actually supporting the team. And apparently blame is assigned to team oriented players, not the support role. :/

Thresh Hooked the enemy ADC outside Baron pit. Threw lantern to grab ally Katarina, went in, used E to deny Leona's E+Q combo, cage to keep them all in Kat's ult, Locket and FotM to keep her alive, hooked J4 as he tried to flee.

Pentakill.

I think the recognition comes in the overall tbh. That's why ppl ban Blitz / Thresh and whatnot, they know that a good support might end their game. And trust me, once you support well, the enemy team will get really mad at you. Isn't that enough recognition? [slayer-jinx-wink]

my response to your title:

why do you dedicate your league life to having random strangers who you will never see again(maybe) give you credit?

my main reason on why I don't play support is because I don't like working with a low elo adc, one would have to go in their head to understand their playstyle and what they're thinking

My "League life"? what the fiddle sticks? that's nonsense.

My argument is that it would be far more likely for people to play support if they were recognized as valuable members of the team rather than often times ignored. It's really not that complicated.

Anidan3 votes

In my experience support tends to be more popular as long as playing support doesn't feel like you're a complete bitch fairly early in the game, and unfortunately, League has this tendency to make supports feel like bitches. Since they won't really scale much with items, leaving them mostly to their bases and their utility, this means that if anyone but the other supports jumps them after about 15-20 minutes, there's not much they can do but try to run, whereas in some of the other MOBAs, they can actually try to fight back.

I'd personally argue that players in League (and MOBAs in general) have a bigger problem with feeling helpless than they do with not getting proper recognition.

Supports are League's version of American Football's linemen. It's an important role but heavily underrated and underappreciated. That said, I love the role and have since season 1.

MrNuclearPumpkin8 votes

Your teammates say that. But the people on the other team were probably shouting out. "SCREW this Braum! AAARGH!!"

The enemy team will always notice the support, because the support is keeping them from killing the ADC. They want the ADC's booty. And the support keeps them from getting it.

Alistar/MF, MF gets a double kill, you know what the enemy team is gonna say? "This freaking Alistar is making our lives miserable. We can't get to MF and we can't focus Alistar."

Janna/MF, Enemy Jungler drops in and makes a 3v2 gank. MF ends up getting a triple kill. You know what they'll say? "Who is the dumbass that let Janna through pick/ban!?!"

Your teammates aren't watching your lane. They're watching their lanes. They only see what pops up on the screen. All they see is MF getting kills. However, the enemy team will notice the support first hand if the ADC is fed.

Sure.

well, healers usually get praised for that sorta thing when they give lots of heals

LordGeovanni11 votes

never saw it. its always this broken healer that broken healer with long cooldown heals that arent nami or low actual heals or that one healer that kills her self to heal but you still focus who is being healed.

If you play for credit you're not playing the game right.

Don't try to impress anyone but yourself.

I play traditional REAL supports like Janna Taric Soraka Nami and i literally don't care if the babysitted right clicking Vayne takes all the credit. Because i play for myself. I play because i love the champions.

And while i might not get that soooo improtant "gj" from an ally, i know that my abilities/active items will have an impact. Which will be show on the "Victory" screen.

Almighty.

warmcorntortilla6 votes

You've just got to wait for that sweet, sweet moment someone on the enemy team tells you to get cancer.

That's the best compliment you can ever receive as a support.

AgeOfTheMage1 votes

Or when the whole team focuses you cause at least they know you're important. i once had the whole enemy team chase me around the entire map as soraka XD

NekoniClaws2 votes

TBH I focus Soraka the second I get into lane.

Your's sincerely Leona

NekoniClaws5 votes

I spectated a match where my friend (high gold, was supping a silver Mordekaiser- vs a plat Jhin) carried and went S+ on Leona (if a higher rank existed, he'd have it.) everyone thought it was his ADC's doing. He was traversing the map via Zenith-blades and enemy deaths alone and no-one noticed even then!

Having said that, I don't know if it bothers him since he still mains support. And it doesn't really bother me either, as long as I achieve one thing on occassion: getting focussed by the enemy team. You're next to your adc and they're shooting at you? AND you're a tank? Now THAT'S a compliment.

ADCs tend to be pretty nice when they have a good support though. And there's no-one in anyone else's lane to thank them for saving them or making good engages, so I think it evens out.

When I play ADC and my support does ANYTHING good- that's usually enough for me to thank them. We got a kill botlane and they didn't die for it? 'GJ!' - Heck the role is so messed up right now, I want to thank them if they even pick an actual support champion. But that'd be clingy.

Weasel Kensei5 votes

When you said "rewarding" I think you meant satisfying.

Your right it does suck, here is the appropriate video...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jGy5ZJ8cSUE

Heres the thing. Here is why I support. I want to win. There are a lot of people with the skills to play their lane/role well. What is often the problem is people who cant support well. If you dont have someone who can do the support role well, or thinks theyre going to rewrite the META by taking kills and CS then those people will languish in lower elos where that may work.

A good support, like one who can set up a good Braum ult, and cover the ADC while they breakout their channel ult isnt something everyone can do. Many people fail to understand their supports contribution.

Its just like the people who try to argue with the support and call them 0/6 when theyre the support.. conveniently leaving off the 0/6/12 part. Cause if the support had kills, they would be bitching about that...

Some people still do recognize the support contribution though. Theyve played support, or main ADC long enough to know when their support is good, and when theyre just "around." Some cant, but some do.

Here is the appropriate video...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wrK6nnzbY3w

Its hard to see but they say "gj sup" in the chat. Someone noticed the support contribution, and thanked them. While some notice the good, it seem support only really gets attention if theyre dying a bit more than average, then you get a lot of attention.

So thats the support fate atm. If your doing bad, youre shit and everything is your fault, if you doing great... GOOD JOB ADC WAY TO BE AMAZING!!!! :D HERE IS A FREE SKIN!

I agree it can be very unsatisfying to be in support position. Cant be helped though. Iv finished games as a mid laner where I went 3/15/19, and getting all kinds of shit from my team. Then at the end, all that shit talk goes away the second they check the damage chart and see that I have 35,000 more damage than anyone else... yeah, I carried every teamfight and if I had gotten peel, Id have all the kills instead of them picking up a broom and cleaning up after me. Instead I get flamed for dying and called a feeder. People dont see the macro game very often, they only see a tiny sliver and think they know it all. This example of my mid game where I 100-30% the entire enemy team, then get jumped on and the team just somehow dosnt notice this contribution is very common.

So sorry your not getting that pat on the back man. I know how it is. Im right there with you as a support main. Sucks, but a good support helps win games. Do it cause you want to win. Be the teams glue.

Dont really have an appropriate video....

Umm... Ah, here is a highlights video of me and a buddy playing some Overwatch where he does some great healing but doesnt get credit for it... but instead gets credit for offensive assist!

As a former Alistar one-trick myself, here's what I'd like to say. Whenever your teammates, whether it's your adc, your mid laner or whatever, are given a simple "gg", "ggwp" or even just a small positive comment in post-game chat and not you, sometimes, yeah, it does sort of demotivate you a little. It almost makes you feel as if you didn't do well enough to be recognized as well as credited. But that's just it you see.

League of Legends is all about competitive game play and you know, you're always going to get those sort of people who pretty much just get jealous of your hard work and commitment to the point where they try and look for an excuse to almost "get back at you" because they feel jealous that they couldn't perform as well as you did and that's okay. Everyone has those moments.

What I like to do is whenever I'm about to play a normal game, a ranked game or whatever, I always tend to kickstart the game off with some solid positivity. Things like, "We can do this team! Just try your best and focus on objectives <3". The reason why I do this is so that I can give my team a huge morale boost because it just simply puts them in a very positive mindset and when you have teammates who are in a positive mindset, things like the atmosphere and whatnot are also positive too. Even when let's say, halfway through a game, some of my teammates are tilting and becoming slightly toxic in all chat because they keep making some minor mistakes, all I do is tell them "It's fine. We can still do this.", like I don't try and shot-call or anything, I just try to get them back into a more calm and collective mentality because when you do start becoming toxic, you make even more bad decisions and it just escalates from there.

Long story short, the point that I'm trying to make is, it doesn't matter whether or not the enemy team recognizes you for what you've done in a game. As long as your own team recognizes you for all your hard work and dedication, that's what matters.

Even just by giving a simple "wp" or "gj" to your teammates whenever they make a good play will honestly just help them a lot.

Surfer Ashe4 votes

I give my supports a lot of praise when they do well because an actual good support are so few and far between.

These days, I hardly see ADCs get praise. Nothing flashy about right clicks and decent positioning is now completely expected from the role.

I see the problem though and that at the end of the game, people only care about KDAs and damage done to enemy champions, which supports aren't generally known for, except shit like Brand and Zyra that do damage early-mid game

Supreme Senpai694 votes

I don't need praise but many games I'm just not there. I just flat out do not exist to my team. "Wow did you see me 2v1?" -My ADC in all chat, after I did the majority of the work. "Damn guys I do lots of damage now I'm literally solo'ing dragon." -My ADC, as I start attacking dragon while their jungler is top lane and hope he follows up. "Dude it's a good thing you escaped. Don't be alone or you'll get killed" -my team to my ADC, as I save him, showing he very clearly wasn't alone.

I'd like the ability to clear a minion wave too. Honestly I'd like the ability to carry a game, but I don't have an answer for that. So just not having to spend 4 minutes to kill the minions colliding against my tower would be appreciated

Tangy Citrus4 votes

when i play support, my only goal is to get my adc fed / kept alive long enough to do anything and pray they arent retarded.

The Trent4 votes

You're kind of like a setter in volley ball. Does all the work but whoever spikes it gets the credit.

Ariel the Cruel4 votes

This was a while back, but negative experiences tend to stick around longer.

Near dead retard Jinx decided to turret dive chasing kills. I manage to steal the turret agro before her, wall off Sona and Ezreal ults (I was Braum), She walks away away with the double and I'm practically dead. Enemy Kha shows up, I ult him out of his jump, land Q, die, Jinx gets her triple. Ez: "Honor Jinx" Sona: "Jinx OP" Allied mid Malz: "GJ Jinx"

Come mid game, I can't save her from engaging blatantly stupid fights and she feeds harder than a fat-man's buffet. I get blamed.

Worst I've ever seen it. And holy shit that game pissed me off.

But ya. These types of scenarios are pretty common. All that matters is who got the kill (Or most damage in your case ;p ), everyone else is either a feeder or getting carried.

But as I've posted many times before, this isn't something that is likely to see significant change any time in the near future. LoL just fundamentally doesn't support having 5 champions.

Lexyy3 votes

It's even worse when you save your adc from sure death at least 10 times in lane, and not a single "thank you". Bitch, next time - you're gonna die.

I dont mind as long as the team win. The worst feeling for me as a support is to make the adc super strong with 4-5 kill in lane and then mid game come. ADC think he some sort of god and start engaging alone and drop the game by dying over and over and be useless. Thank for wasting all my time and the work I put into you.

This has been the problem of Support since....forever. Truly is a thankless task. If you main the role you get used to being the invisible 5th player that causes teammates to inexplicably stop dying. As well as causing them to go: "Huh, why did that Nautilus anchor miss me? Ah well, must've been lag" Meanwhile you're getting pounded into dust by an angry dude in a diving suit.

The only persons who care about getting credit while playing support are the bronzes or people who suffered a tough childhood lmao. Not trying to insult anyone but that's how i feel. Like i legit don't care if people tell me things like "thanks" or "good job" while playing support. If i did a good play than i'm happy for it i don't need any recognition. When i watch streams of high elo people they don't give a fuck about getting credit either so i'm 100% sure that this ain't the reason why people dont play supp.

midnight oil244 votes

I don't ask for thanks but it would be nice to just once get a "good job" or a "thanks for the help" instead of the entire team disregarding me unless I don't buy a sightstone. And what they do then is just yell at me.
