It's Kinda Sad to See How This Game Has Changed Over Time

I joined the League community in June of 2014 with some friends that had already been playing, and let me tell you the game felt so great to play during that time. I wasn't very good at first but I was able to function with and without my friends, level up well, and grasp the concept of the game quickly. It felt so fun to play and became my #1 favorite game, I played every single day.

3 (4 in 5 months) years may not be that long, but I have seen the game change from what it once was since the time that I joined. And while that is to be expected, of course the game is going to change, it doesn't feel like it is changing for the better especially with this preseason. Ever since this preseason started I have felt lost, like I don't belong anywhere, like I can't get anything done.

I finally reached Gold last ranked season, which was my all time #1 ranked goal. I was very proud, made it to Gold 3. And then preseason hit. I now find myself struggling to win a single game. I see tanks dealing insane amounts of damage for what they have built, simply because of a rune they have. Certain champions are running around wreaking havoc while other champs that were once fine are now struggling to see any play. There's a difference between meta, and parts of the game being absolutely broken.

In my 3 years the game has never felt so lost

so toxic

so difficult to play and enjoy

as it does now.

And what feels even worse is that Riot doesn't seem to be listening. I see buff after buff but not to the champions that need it, and the playerbase has been very vocal about this. There are many champions that are not weak, they are just crushed by the champions that are absolute monsters right now. And you cannot account for all of them with 10 bans. You ban one champ, they are just replaced by another of equal strength.

It feels more like a battle of "what team has the most op and bursty champions" than a game of skill, teamwork, and strategy, and it really saddens me.

I'm definitely going to do my best to reach Gold again, but I can't see it happening. Maybe next preseason something will change for the better.

Yeah it's almost like the new runes are more dynamic and do more than just give us stats. I mean, it's not like Riot worked hard on them, right? They totally didn't also improve the honor system at all. Sure we get free stuff from it, but it's still not good, right? Last year was the most balanced I've ever seen the game (before Galio) but that doesn't matter does it? The new runes are designed to let you build your own playstyle and adapt to different situations. If you cannot understand that, then that is your problem.

The new runes also led to some really bad balance changes. The game is the most imbalanced now since I've joined, and instead of working on lowering the amount of damage in the game and maybe helping some of the champs that were doing fine before the new runes they continuously buff champions that don't need it while nerfing champs that really haven't been making any impact.

Honor system is great, and so is hextech, but that doesn't affect gameplay and that isn't what I was talking about.

When you say you started playing almost 4 years ago you should have seen the 100% pick/ban Kassadin era, you should have seen League of Cleavers where every single AD champion started his build with black cleaver and ended it with black cleaver. You should have seen Poppy tanking infinite turretshots from 2 turrets at the same time 2 years ago.

And you say this game is the most imbalanced NOW? Give me a fucking break. You have absolutely no idea wtf you're talking about xD

So you are upset that Riot changed a huge and fundamental system in the game (affecting every single player, champion, and game) and don't have the game in a state of perfect balance in ~2 months (that included a holiday season when most people are out of office) after ~3 patches?

I think Riot could have implemented a new rune system without buffing damage across the board. The game feels unhealthy because Riot continues to buff things to make them playable. How about just nerfing the OP things back into line?

If assassins are having trouble functioning, cool rework Thunderlord's into Electrocute so that they are better at all in's. Not a flat buff but a guided rework that moves damage away from lane trades that they don't care about into all ins which is what they are build for. Heck nerf tank damage while you're at it so that assassins and bursty snowballers don't get outscaled so quickly.

But what did they do? Added a damage rune for tanks and made their defensive stats from runes kind of laughable compared to the old system. And in addition to the better Electrocute, assassins also got damage buffs in their tiers below the keystone. Result? EVERYTHING IS BOOM OR BUST. Tanks either clap assassins early and the assassin feels useless, or assassins clap the tank early and they feel like paper. In either scenario one or the other does not get the chance to do what their champ is meant to do.

There are a lot of issues, I'm just using these as examples. Like the zombie ward thing is a really good idea, so is the poro thing. Options outside of damage are amazing for balancing. Right now Riot is just like "Well everything does damage and has aggressive options so everything is viable." How about buffing utility to making things more viable instead of their damage, how about making some defensive options so strong that it is as valuable as the aggressive options everyone is so high on?

Here are some examples: -1. Assassins need a leg up? - Make Eyeball Collection a bounty based system based on unique champion kills, so it's most optimal on someone who plans on roaming a lot early. Remove Cheap Shot and Sudden impact, replace with something like bonus movement in brush and a couple seconds after leaving brush, or bonus movement nearby a low hp target.

-2. Tanks need to remain viable? - Don't give them damage too! Give them tank stats and/or utility so that if they want to win, they win through tanking. Tank damage go down, tank defense come online earlier.

-3. Poke champs hardly seeing the light of day? -Don't make poke burstier or tanks flimsier. Give just a tiny boost to poke damage, then hit HP regen so their damage just sticks rather than straight up chunking way harder. That way they more impactful and scale slightly better.

TLDR In summary the rune system would be more balanced and achieve variety in healthy ways if it was expressed through more utility, defense, or highly situational damage buffs versus flat out damage buffs. There should be as many utility and defense runes as there are damage runes, and they should be roughly equal in value.

it doesn't feel like it is changing for the better especially with this preseason

[...] to you. I've been playing this game since the beginning and not only do I think that the changes in this preseason have been absolutely great for the game, I also think that you're wrong on pretty much every single thing you said.

There's a difference between meta, and parts of the game being absolutely broken.

Please elaborate on this. You complain so much about balance but you never mention any specifics besides the usual circle jerk (hurr durr tanks do damage).

And what feels even worse is that Riot doesn't seem to be listening

Incredibly strong champions get nerfs (Teemo), champions that are frustrating to play against get nerfs (Heimer), runes are being adjusted for an entire playstyle (fighter), champions that struggled with the new runes get help in form of buffs and and and How are they not listening?

Do you mean that they aren't listening to you specifically? I seriously don't get it. Name a couple of things Riot isn't listening to you.

You definitely had something in mind when you just vaguely complain about everything and anything right? Go ahead ...

but I can't see it happening

Yeah that's the spirit. Blame the game, blame the champions, blame Riot and blame the game balance ... but don't even think about you being bad and trying to fix it
