Could there ever be a champion based around gold instead of mana or energy?

They would have increased gold generation of course to counteract the cost. But seriously why not, it could be interesting.

I think it would either make the champion strong as a support or as an adc.

Either an adc that mostly does auto attacks and thus ignores their own abilities and just gets more gold. Or a support that just uses the gold to outscale the enemy support then win some early 2v2s?

It could work, but would be a really delicate balance and i don't see the gain from implementing it.

yeah it is a tricky be a situation. But look at mord, he gains full experience to be levels ahead in lane

Morde is a recent rework, and is likely the single most imbalanced champion in the game right now. Within a day or two of being released, he shot to a 56% win rate as ADC and became the most picked/banned adc. He's due for nerfs on the PBE, but they don't look like enough to me. Overall, he'll remain a must ban for a while until he's nerfed to the point that he's really undertuned. And likewise, what was the purpose in making him go bot lane? It didn't really add much, just frustration to the adcs that have to play against him and can't do anything in lane as he'll win any 2v2 at any point of the laning phase, even if you've got a lead from jungle help.

I think they wanted a viably melee bot lane ADC since there wasn't one. But maybe this is an attempt to create the "new" meta of no ranged champs except possibly mid. Just look at all juggernauts. they easily kill any ADC that doesn't have great disengage (like most)

I don't think so.

Energy and mana exist as ways to "gate" cooldowns, mana gates cooldowns early and energy gates cooldowns late. If you use gold as a resource, you face feast and famine. Players may use their abilities until they have no gold left, or they just plain don't have enough gold after using their spells for the items they need; or the gold gain will be too high, and a passive player on this champion could buy items faster than their lane opponents unfairly and then dominate by winning the waiting game.

I can see gold being used a secondary resource (like mana on Soraka's E) that's negligible, like that one gambling champion on DOTA(?), and ways to get more gold by spending gold, but not as a main resource.

The only problem I see would be that, when behind, said champ would be even LESS effective than normal behind champs, because they have to use their limited casting resource for items or limited item money as a casting resource. Its also not very readable for the player against it. And with increased gold generation hyper-snowballing becomes a very real possibility. So there's actually more than one problem I see. But it would be neat to see attempted.

good point, maybe a way to counteract would make there damage output higher than normal

Ehhh...

The main problem is that gold is already a main resource on every champion. It's how they buy the vast majority of items, the exceptions being free trinkets and Gangplank's ultimate upgrades.

Making it double as a gate for spells would just be asking for balance issues.
