Rengar Shouldn't Be Able to Jump from Bush While Silenced

I know what you are thinking "THATS STUPID!" but hear me out before down voting (even though im pretty sure you already did). So my problem with Rengar is his ability to jump on you from really far away and kill you in under a second. That's cool and all because he be an assassin but there is very little counter play since by the time you hit any sort of button to protect yourself, you are already dead. Again he is an assassin so this is normal, the only issue is the other assassins can be stopped by a silence. If you nail the silence BEFORE they jump on you then you done good, but if you fail you are dead, and rightly so. Rengar is hella diffent, cuz the fool can still gap close onto you even while silenced and since his AA's do a bazillion damage you are still dead before you can react. When your only form of CC is a silence (i will explain the scenario shortly) you can't stop him from killing you despite the outplays and skill. So i figure hey a silence should be able to prevent him from leaping at you...

Now for the scenario that brought this subject up: I was Malzahar (make sense now?) and i had just killed 2 people, one of which with my ult. Then here comes this Rengar and i know i can kill him as long as he doesnt kill me before i put on my E and Ignite. Well here he comes chasing me and im waiting for E to come off CD so i flash and start running. I nail him with my silence taking out a third of his life (he had no MR and i was fed) so for sure my E and Ignite plus Voidy should kill him, i throw down my W on me, turn around and hit E on him but right when i do he jumps and instantly erased me. He erased me so fast my E didnt even go off on him despite the fact i hit it before he jumped.

So how is that fair? My skills required much more skill, timing, and placement and yet i still lost. My Q is not overly hard to land but it is harder to land on a moving target that is about to leap on your face than just left clicking on an enemy and instantly jumping on them. The Rengar absolutely did not deserve the kill, i definitely played the situation better by hitting him with my Q and readying my W below me where he would surely land.

Just to be clear i am not mad i was erased so quickly, im not mad my E didnt go off, im not mad Voidy stood there like an idiot. I am mad because i played correctly and did the only thing i could (malz only has a Silence) and timed my abilities correctly but i was defeated merely by kit design. If that was any other assassin, my Q would have won me that fight or allowed me to escape at the very least. I know not all Silences are as hard to hit as Malz's and his isnt even all that hard, but they at least take a bit more skill to properly place and time then Rengar's jump.

EDIT: So somehow ive been misunderstood... IM NOT ASKING TO CHANGE SILENCES TO EFFECT ALL PASSIVES! Only Rengars... why would i want it to effect everything? That is stupid. It stopping Rengar is not stupid, in the situation above i was left with no option but to die despite me being mechanically better. That to me is not a fair situation.

Rengar's jump isn't an ability, therefore silence will not affect it. That makes just as much sense as Kassadin being susceptible to minion block while silenced.

Stephenizgod1 votes

Yes i am aware of this, but it still doesn't mean its fair. I think they should put it into his abilities so that Silence does effect it.

Guy Fox Teemo3 votes

No, anything thats a passive will not be affected by silence, silence implys an active, rengars jump is a passive.

Stephenizgod1 votes

Which is why it should be made to be silence-able. Im aware of his passive and that it is a passive, but you can still make it so its silenced...

passive abilities are also not effected by silence, silence simply prevents you from USING an ability.

Wth... can anyone offer up a valid reason why this is not a good change other then "Silences dont work on passives" "rengars jump is a passive" "passives dont get effected by silences" im well aware of Silences not working on passives, i know his jump is a passive.... Why is this not a good change for Rengar though? It offers the ability to counter play for champions like Malz who have no hard CC.

Because you haven't offered any reason for the change other than "I died to him, but since I am a better player, I shouldn't have."

Guess what, A Malz without his ult up is supposed to die to people who can jump on him. It is up to you to come up with a solution to not die and unfortunately you made a wrong choice.

Why did you flash before the jump? That is how you messed up and got outplayed. Saying that there was nothing else that you could do is just you being in denial and blaming something external instead of looking at your own mistakes.

He would have killed me the moment he landed on me... i was low life so one or two Auto's would have killed me. Why did i Flash? My abilities were on cool down and i needed another second before they were up, i flashed to give me that 1 extra second and it did, my abilities came off cool down. I thought that i could kill him from afar before he could complete his jump.

Guess what, A good Malz should be able to out play someone by timing his abilities and placing them in the correct place.

How is that a mistake, if he jumped on me he would have killed me, he could have thrown his bola, flashed himself at me before i could get away. I made a defensive move of getting out of range of his abilities so i could Silence him, that way he cant throw his Bola at me and if he does land on me he cant use his other abilities. I was very close to dying but if he messed up somehow i could survive, i was taking into account all possible out comes of the fight. Flashing was the only way to stop him from hitting bola on me, which would have meant instant death. Flashing gave me a chance to use abilities. BTW if that was any other assassin i would have killed them, my silence would have stopped them from jumping to me and i could have clicked E with no fear and then kited them using Voidlings as a shield. So i didn't get out played, his kit allowed him to kill me for free.

And you guessed wrong, it happens. No need to call for a Nerf, just play it better next time.

Why not flash into the Drag pit then? It sounds like you were close to it. Flash over the wall from where he came from? Like, there are a million things you could have done differently, and the only way to get better is to look at that a figure out what you could have done better.

Calling for a Nerf doesn't help you get better.

Yup, and since you were missing a key part of those abilities, you are vulnerable. #counterplay

Also, If he had flash, then there wasn't much you could do in any situation. Accept the death an move on.

Please dont judge me based on your assumptions of what happened... I was too far from Drag pit i was not quite in the Tri-Bush i was near it. I flashed over that wall next to Tri-bush, he had Mobi boots though so i knew he was going to catch me. There was nothing to do, if i flashed near red buff i would be cut off from a possible retreat and there were no wards in that area so its possible there was an enemy in there. I flashed in the direction i did because i thought i could kill him if i had an extra second for CD's but also because its possible he would give up thinking i had allies near me.

Yup, and since you were missing a key part of those abilities, you are vulnerable. #counterplay

Ok so im dead gg i should have just stood there and let him kill me. You are right and i am wrong for trying to out play him.

No it did get me out of range of his abilities... He is faster then me though so he got to the tri-bush before i could get far enough away. I also needed my Q to stop him from further casting and the flash gave me time to use it. He did not have flash actually he used it previously, but thats beyond the point, i should not just sit there and let him kill me i should try to kill him or escape. Unfortunately i died and its whatever we won and i wrecked bot lane. Everyone is just assuming im complaining but i honestly think i should be rewarded for better mechanics, if i was a mobile champ i could have won but i was an immobile champ, they are already weaker just because of that i think its fair counterplay against a highly mobile champ that me landing a silence should be rewarded.

No. Silences specifically work by preventing any summoner spell or ability usage. If Swain is silenced while in R form he is stuck in R form until the silence wears off (or he runs out of mana). Your suggestion would require an entire re-writing of silences that would make them literally on of the best soft CCs in the game then (silence an adc, now they don't have their steroids. Silence a fighter, now they dont have their passives or abilities. etc.). Additionally, that makes a soft CC that is somewhat rare hard counter multiple champions in an unintuitive and powerful way (silence Anivia, now she doesn't have her egg WHICH SHE LOSES ALL RESISTANCES AND BASE HEALTH TO HAVE EXIST. Silence Ashe/Kalista, suddenly you have a literally useless marksman for however long they are silenced. Silence Tryndamere, guess he can't crit or have the AD from Q now!). You also can't make it work specifically on one champion only as that gives a MASSIVE burden of knowledge on any player and sets precedent for such unintuitive and backwards changes.

Uh no... all i said was to code Rengar's jump so he doesnt jump while silenced... im not asking to change Silences, only for Rengar so there is a possible way to counter play him. In the situation above there was nothing i could have done, nothing... there was no counter play and the only way i could survive was if he decided not to kill me. Malz's kit leaves him no way to defend himself in that situation, i dont think its fair that i was mechanically better and lost purely because the game decided it my time to die. I feel like situations like that are what we should be removing from this game, there should ALWAYS be something you can do.

here's the counter play as someone who has A LOT of rengar games played.

  1. If you know there's a rengar, why are you going near bushes when he can kill you?
  2. If he's going full damage he's squishy, stick next to someone with cc (or use your own). In your case you should have waited until he'd jumped out of the bush to flash, once he has no bush to jump from his ult is the only way for him to gap close.
  3. His ult not only gives an exclamation point, but makes a very unique noise when he's nearby during it, buy a pink, or upgrade a red trinket and you can see him coming.
  4. Grouping is rengar's biggest weakness, he can't pick off a target with 4 other champions nearby without sentencing himself to death and chancing him getting nothing out of it.

OK! This is why its impossible to post anything... no one reads my posts before commenting that im an idiot...

I was all alone and had just won a 2v1 as Malzahar. I was near Tri-bush in bot lane closest to Dragon. Rengar came through the bush near Krugs, i was in jump distance so i flashed before he could jump. I needed my abilities to come off CD so i could kill him before he killed me. I timed my Q so he would run into it when he entered the bush, it hit and took out about 1/3rd of his life. My E, W, and Voidling should have been able to kill him. So i threw W down on me, i knew where he would land, and hit my E but before it even went on to him he jumped and killed me instantaneously. NOW! im not mad i died so quickly im mad i out played him but it amounted to nothing, he won simply through kit design. I timed my abilities and their CD's perfectly so i could kill him but i lost because Malzahar can not stop Rengar from leaping on to him without his Ult which i did not have. Malz is immobile with low MS and no escape, his only form of CC is a Silence (not counting his ult which also suppresses him) which has no effect on Rengar.

Im not complaining about Rengar, his ability to instantly kill someone is BS but its no different then any other Assassin. The only difference being if my Silenced had landed on any other Assassin i would have killed them instead, Rengar is the only one a Silence doesn't stop.

You are asking for silences to be changed, but since you don't know enough about how the game is designed, you think you are just asking a for a single champion exception.

The counterplay is to not run away from Renger through bushes. Instead of just calling for a Nerf, think about what happened and plan accordingly in the future.

Stephenizgod1 votes

I AM NOT ASKING FOR SILENCES TO BE CHANGED! Only on Rengar! That is changing Rengar not Silences, this would only effect Rengar and it would only effect his ability to leap while silenced. It wont stop him from AAing, it wont stop him from moving, it wont effect anyone else in this game.

You dont know the situation, i didnt run from him through bushes i was already in a bush when i saw him coming, so i flashed away to stop his first jump because he was in bushes near Krugs and i was in the tri bush near Drag. There was nothing i could have done in that situation except kill him but since my Silence doesnt stop him from jumping on me i wasn't able to kill him first. I didnt have Zhonya's or GA or Sterak's or whatever... there was nothing to do and thats why i am mad, there should always be something i can do.

That is now how good video games are designed. Why should Rengar's Passive be the only one affected by silences? You need a better reason than just "because I died to him".

You could have saved your flash for when he jumped. That is what you could have done to live.

Stephenizgod1 votes

God dammit its not because i died to him its because I landed my abilities on him, my timing and placement was better then his. All he had to do was click on me and let Rengar just run at me. How is that rewarded more then good timing and placement on abilities?

You could have saved your flash for when he jumped. That is what you could have done to live.

No i couldnt have, i flashed because of his Bola, Rengar has a ranged ability which everyone seems to forget. If he hit me with that i was dead, so i flashed to get away from his root and because i was already within range of his jump so if he landed on me i would have died and still lost my flash as is the case when you flash but a Melee attack or ability has already completed their animation.

You say no one is reading your post correctly, but I'm pretty sure everyone is,

The short answer, no. It makes literally no sense. Silence prevent the usage of abilities, not passives, if you want that to happen, you'd be asking to change every passive as well, not just Rengar, it makes no sense to make literally one arbitrary change just for one champion, no matter how strong the champion is.

Stephenizgod1 votes

Mm actually thats what balance is... and no... no one is reading my post correctly... It would not require a change to all passives, i know its hard to think that far outside the box but it is possible to only change ONE champion... riot does it all the time...

No I don't think you understand, everyone understands what you want, its not difficult to understand it. You don't' seem to understand this is just a silly and downright absurd idea.

The name of the game is consistency. Specifically why is it that one passive and only one passive is impacted by silence? Just answer that one question objectively. Not in the name of "Because X champion is OP!!!!" That's not a reason.

It literally makes no sense. That's not balance at all, that's picking and choosing and making an exception to the rule for it.

that's literally the opposite of balance.

Guyy Fieri3 votes

That would be like saying that Aatrox/Zac/Anivia passives should be countered by silences...taking away their revive. If you really want to counter play the Rengar and you were as fed as you say you were, instead of buying more damage, get something defensive...something to keep you from being so squishy, especially on the immobile Malzahar. Rengars strength is in one shorting squishies...if you take that away, there's your counterplay

Stephenizgod1 votes

Its really not like that at all but ok

Yes i will start to buy defensively in the middle of a battle far away from the shop... thanks for the sage advice because you were totally there... I hadnt built my damage yet, all i had was Rylais' which is defensive mind you, and Liandry's which also gives a decent amount of life, i really didnt have my major damage items. Zhonya's is not a bad choice normally but i was in bot lane against a Kog and Thresh so its not really optimal as i dont want to be standing in one place for thresh to grab me, although every time he did i took out 90% of Kogs life. At this point where Reng killed me i didnt have many items and im not complaining that i died which everyone seems to think. I am complaining about a lack of counterplay for certain champions. Im merely pointing out that Rengar can only be stopped by hard CC, so a champion like Malz or Raka have no way of peeling or out playing him.

Twëek2 votes

It's an auto attack modifier. There's no champion that is inhibited from auto attacking by a silence.

Stephenizgod1 votes

Man why is no one understanding me... I know exactly what rengar's jump is.... I'm not saying it should stop him from AAing it should just stop the jump.

Because you're asking for a change that is bad for the game's clarity. If you know that Rengar's jump is just an AA modifier then you'd understand why your request doesn't make sense. It'd be the same as if silences stopped Kalista's hopping. From the wiki:

Silence: A unit that is silenced cannot cast abilities or activate items for the duration.

Mobility like Rengar's and Kalista's is not a cast ability.

In regards to your original post - You talk about it being unfair that you had no tools left to disable Rengar after you had already used your hard CC to kill someone else. You did have a tool to stop Rengar but chose to use it on someone else. Of course a glass cannon assassin is going to be able to blow up a squishy immobile mage if you don't save CC for him.

insaiyanbacca2 votes

except silences dont stop auto's and his leap is just an empowered auto, just change blinds to disable his jump even tho they already screw him over hard

Stephenizgod1 votes

omg... i know that already... i just want to know why its not a good change. Like can someone give me some sort of run down on how that would effect Rengar as a champion. From my point of view i see Silences effecting him as counterplay, it helps champions like Soraka or Malz peel against him because otherwise they can do nothing about it (in my situation i dont have ult as Malz). If this makes him too weak though, then id like for someone to explain how this effects him? There are not many silences in the game that can be used like Malz's or Raka's.

Because to make that change and still have a balanced game, you would pretty much have to change the way Silences affect all passives. You can't just make a 1-off change to a champion like that. That puts an unhealthy burden of knowledge on the players.

It's not that it isn't a good/bad change for Rengar. It's a bad change for the game design and balance as a whole.

Stephenizgod1 votes

Not really, it would just be Rengar who is effected by this and only a few champions in the game are capable of Silencing him before he can jump. If its in the Patch Notes, then everyone will know that Silences can stop Rengar's jumps. I don't know how coding and what not work, but they have made balance changes that only effect certain champions in the past so im sure they are more then capable of coding Silences to effect Rengar's jump.

How is it bad for balance? Its not complicated to remember "hey i can silence Reng and he cant jump", only a few champions can actually pull it off anyways and those champions have no other form of CC which adds counterplay for them and therefore more balance. It also rewards better mechanical skills, if you time it and place it correctly you are rewarded while Reng is punished for bad engage just like any other Assassin in this game.

Ra1d2 votes

I know a bit about coding and the only way you can make this work without affecting the overall gamedesign is by putting it specifically in his passive that he cant jump from a bush if silenced. The whole damn thingdown make any sense though if you do. Very few champions have silence and to specifically have silences affect rengar in this way would both be unfair snd pintless. Garen has to be in melee range. To silence chogath is also very close and better off using q. Fiddlesticks can use fear as it is more reliable form of cc against rengar snyways. What youre asking for is a pointless change that would effect rengar at all negatively and instead give players a misunderstanding that silencing rengar will help them get away. It wont. If you want to counter rengar. Armor and and vision are your best bet not useless mechanical changes the end up doing nothing overall.

Stephenizgod1 votes

Thats actually my point... This wouldnt effect him negatively in anyway but it would help Malzahar positively without giving him an actual buff. It would help Soraka peel as well, because currently she cant stop a good Rengar from 100-0 even with a heal.

Ra1d1 votes

It may help them but giving them a mechanical advantage but heres the problem with your statement, a good malzahar would ult rengar the second he spots him trying to kill, a good soraka would time her e so that it would snare rengar. If hes ulted then the whole silence means nothing if itll only prevent his passive leap not his ult leap also think about the purpose of a silence. It is usedto prevent an enemy champion from casting its abilities and summoner spells. You know this. Youre asking riot to change how their game works because of the passive of one champion. This is by far the biggest fault with your idea and the only way riot would make this happen to rengar is if they changed the way silences work and this would then cause issues to other champions like malzahar could prevent volibears passive from going off or blitz's shield. This would then be gamebreaking as it would give every champion with a silence an unnecesary buff.

Stephenizgod1 votes

Mm the whole reason for my post was that i didn't have my ult as Malzahar, since he is faster then me with a gap closer i was basically dead the moment he saw me. I was trying to make it so champion like Malzahar or Soraka can stop Rengar BEFORE he kills them or someone else (even if you time the Silence on soraka he can still kill someone before being rooted).

I know now that giving certain champions a mechanic advantage over only one champion is a bad idea, its both unfair and pointless. Although im sure Riot could make i so Silences only effect Rengar and not Volibear and others, i mean bugs aside that would not be an issue. I just think i should have been given a chance to survive in that situation, im not complaining that i died im complaining of a lack of counterplay, my only option was to die apparently.

insaiyanbacca2 votes

except that if you apply it to rengar you have to apply it to everyone, and thematically it makes no sense, making a gian lion like predator hunter thing shut up isnt gonna stop him from jumping on you. thematically blinds disabling his jump would make more sense because if he cant see you he cant jump on you.

Stephenizgod1 votes

Why? I'm not understanding there are plenty of mechanics that effect different champions.

Silences in general dont make much sense thematically and neither does a lot of things in this game. Like how do those bushes hide Sion? The dude is like 10 ft tall. How can Brand stand in bushes without lighting them on fire? how can he be hurt by dragons fire balls? How does anyone hurt Mordekaiser? he is walking metal... where does Nidalee keep all those spears? ah.. nvm i dont want to know... or do i? >:D... anyways you cant really use that as a reason for it not working. Blinds already stop him from dealing damage after jumping so i think they are fair enough. Besides if it was a Talon or Kat or Kha my Silence would have stopped them from leaping at me.

insaiyanbacca2 votes

first off only kha out of those 3 has an actual leap and using him as an example here is honestly pretty bad considering hes very weak rn, and rengar's leap is his passive not an active ability so there is nothing he has to activate to use it. and for how silences making sense thematically they stop the caster of their abilities unable to use them because they are unable to utter any of the "magical words" to activate them. im no talking about logic im talking about the whole theme of "silences stop people from empowering themselves with abilities and spells, not passive skills that they dont even have to think abot to use.

Stephenizgod1 votes

Well his overall balance is not relevant, im talking about it stopping their actual gap closer. Silence can stop Yasuo, Ekko, Riven, Shen, Cait, Lucian, Graves, Jax, Lee Sin, etc. So if you want to talk about just leaps and dashes then your argument is still invalid as there are plenty of examples in the game. Also i know that it is his Passive and that it does effect him in a way different to everyone else, but its not like it doesn't make sense. I mean Yasuo doesn't need to say magic words to use abilities, thematically i mean his Q is just a stab..., and yet he is still effected.

Valrun2 votes

Edit: Someone already said this, and you still don't get it.

The thing is, his passive jump isn't even a spell, it's more like an AA enhancement.

And nobody is reading what you said wrong, we're all just taking it as you said and we're just saying we think you're wrong and this is a poor idea.

You are missing the point, and are so set in your idea that you cannot look at it objectively or look at the big picture.

In a vacuum, it will have little effect on Rengar, since silences are so few and far between. A lot of people have said that. You chose to ignore it.

The larger point that you seem to be missing is that your idea is an example of bad game design. You don't seem to understand how, to implement your change, you CANNOT do it to just Rengar. If you do, it's bad game design. For it to be healthy for the game as a whole, you would have to apply it to all passives.

Couldn't have summed it up better myself, the issue here isn't clarity of what you want, its the fact you don't seem to understand this is a terrible game design suggestion, period. No one is suggesting Rengar is balanced, but trying to make it so silence effects only one passive in the entire game is a terrible design decision, regardless of who it is on.

And a little food for thought, if the issue here is that no one understands what you are trying to say, that means you're doing a poor job of explaining it. Not that people are incapable of comprehending it.

I honestly think this is a fair change to rengar. I agree that a mid laner has zhonyas usually which offers plenty of counter play to rengar, but honestly ADC's do not have hardly anything they can do against rengar.

His leap is just an empowered auto, a glorified ranged AA if anything. There is no reason to allow it to be stopped by silence. Also after reading your edit and I find this even more ridiculous. So what if you're mechanically better? There's still room for outplay through strategy.
