Autofill is broken?

In champ select, the top laner and I(midlane) both got our desired primary lanes but someone decided to leave. Next champ select, he was put mid and I was put top, and realizing that, we switched.

Question is, why did that happen? We both could have gotten our primary lanes and yet the system decided to switch us.
