Galio is the weakest antimage concept ever

Moody P··15 votes·9,374 views

other tanks fulfill the theme better and its not even intentional. the only thing Galio has going they didn't was that he has the poke to lane against mages directly.

Maokai passive greatly increases in value against casters, and his ultimate completely overrides one of most mages biggest strength; zone control. Tahm new E works much better against being poked and harassed than it works against all ins, again greatly benefiting his effectiveness against AP threats, and his R flanking potential helps him a lot more at ambushing squishy targets than it would a juggernaut or an assassin who can easily escape. Both of these champions (Mundo, too but he's not a tank) also have better access to actually buying MR items because Spirit Visage - one if the core MR pickups - works well for them and sustain is a big counter to mage burst when combined with durability.

Galio gets a one-time magic shield and some magic reduction, otherwise the rest of his kit is mediocre at tanking/locking down mages and is much better at contending divers -- putting him at direct odds with Poppy because he's stepping on her niche.

Compound that with the fact that he's completely a grief pick right now (less than 1% pickrate and horrible performance) and its looking pretty miserable. At what point can we finally say this rework did more harm than good?

He was THE anti-mage before his rework.

Now?

He's a horribly designed half tank that doesn't do damage but barely survives to be a tank as well. He's literally nothing and Riot doesn't care to revert him or give him meaningful changes.

The nerf to Flash W was a low blow; Aatrox after his rework relied on his dash to land all three hits of his Q, and Galio, while W is active, is slowed considerably.

At the very least, allow E to be cast with or buffered while W is active.

Ragnaveil1 votes

you know, that doesnt sound bad. How about he gains his reductions and stuff while E is active (duration keeps ticking) and when E's animation ends, you can recast W. You would have to cast W beforehand though. They did nerf the self slow.

To be fair, he was still good at anti-magic and anti-burst at the start of his rework, too.

He was very much an anti burst character when his rework was released. Personally, I think Riot made a mistake in trying to push him towards more AP builds, as that made him a nightmare to balance with his kit (I mean, yeah they needed to reduce his base damage so he didn’t farm so easily, but we ended up getting full AP assassin Galio out of this).

I’d much prefer they push him back to being a tank first and Mage second.

Ragnaveil1 votes

the mains wanted him more AP centered (which caused that dreaded patch where everyone saw Galio Q one shotting people). Now they want him to also be tanky. How about hes tanky with decent waveclear and call it a day.

Ralanr5 votes

All I want is for him to be tanky with decent waveclear.

I don’t want to do like 90% of someone’s HP with one Q. I like getting a decent chunk in a trade with a full combo, and I like to harass with it, but I don’t want it doing 90% of your health like when they made Galio full AP.

Exactly.

I actually like his design overall, but he's definitely not an anti-magic tank anymore. He's more of a bruiser-caster than anything.

I wonder when people will realise that Riot has been trying to make Sylas to do Galio's job, to be a anti mage.

its because of this dumbass idea to keep him viable as a mid lane mage.

just chose one. tank or mage, and make him excel at that role.

imo just take the % damage and high ap scalings completely off his kit in favour of more resistance scalings, and go all in on his tank identity by adding more utility. like, hes supposed to be the mr counterpart to malphite. just make him exactly that.

Ralanr7 votes

The %damage is fine, the high AP scalings (and the AP scaling on his W) is not.

Reduce his scalings, add some base, and bring back more benefits to building MR.

Tank first. Mage second.

He was like that some time ago, but they changed that because "Ohhh naahh he is waaaayyy too usefull in pro-plays" Then they made him AP and was dealing incredible dmg. Then they nerfed him as AP He was bad both as a tank and AP And then, they touched him again which broke him even more (last patch)

What? They removed Galio's flash-taunt? THANK RIOT Now he needs buffs again so he can compete without having the cheese ability to force your flash for 50 mana.

BackdoorPrincess1 votes

Uses flash to force flash...cheese? Anymore so than wukong or amumu?

Since when does he have to flash to get your flash? The only thing he needs flash for is if you don't flash. Then he gets a kill.

Unironicaly guys, old Galio was waaaaay better and I liked him a lot. All he needed is just small update to his old design abillities and model. Tbh just visual rework with small changes in abillities. New Galio even lost his personality. Whats the point of a rework if u can't fucking balance a champion after that? He is either overpowered or just total shit like right now,

Ragnaveil2 votes

What is worse is that lore makes him out to be such a damn good anti mage due to being made out of the magic absorbing material called Petricite. Fucking yikes.

Channeled flashes are by design bad for the game. It's the prisoners dilemma: one of you flashes (2), both of you flash (1), neither of you flash (1). In only one of four circumstance is playing like a normal human really rewarded. All other situations can result in death, because you don't get to know which choice Galio makes. It removes counterplay entirely. This enables Riot, however, to really throw into his powerbudget in defense.

If next patch doesn't look something like this: Galio

W can not be interrupted by CC, however the original self-slow constraint is nerfed back to original value. W no longer has MR scaling, base is now 25-50% with ap ratio still the same.

Hitting a champion with E refreshes passive

Passive now grants HP from total MR + base per enemy champion it hits.

Then I don't know what they want him to be. Very simple self-sufficient changes like this can bring him back into solo lanes in select match ups, but not all match ups.

Old Galio, as much as i miss him. Wouldnt function in this hyper-overloaded mechanics world that is modern LoL.

Id like to see his healy bubble come back to him, but thats it.

AlienPrimate2 votes

I actually think old Galio would function quite well in today's game. Divers and assassins are quite common which his ult would hard counter. There are a bunch of runes that add random damage numbers which would make his old W even stronger. ADC's have more attack speed now than they used to which would make his ult deal more damage. The addition of Abyssal mask would make his first item synergize with his kit insanely well. Many tools have been added to make getting close for his ult much easier. This includes Righteous glory, Hextech GLP and Protobelt, Approach velocity, Predator, and Magical footwear. Revitalize and condition would be insane on him as secondary runes.

Passive should do bonus damage if you hit champions in your tornado, ultimate should be moved back to regular cast instead of cast on ally. There are plenty of better tanks, that Galio has no chance of competing with (Rammus, Sejuani, Amumu, Leona, Thresh, Malphite, etc.) providing greater utility and damage, plus most ALREADY aren't popular picks.

Dead Anime Dad1 votes

Kassadin isn't much better, he used to fit it pretty well before the years of removing his antimage abilities to the point where only his passive is as such.
