Why do movement abilities have higher priority then stuns?

only zhule··21 votes·9,945 views

So honest question here, why can't i stun a champion out of a dash/charge/ other movement skill? I see them get hit by the stun, but they are still going to travel full distance and probably also be allowed to land their queued up ability they cast during the previous abilities animation. Like i'm super freaking salty that i kept getting wrecked by a Hecarim because his ultimate can literally run right through my Sona ultimate, not to mention that he will also get his fear to proc (because that's fair).

I feel like this is a thing with all movement abilities, once they start it doesn't matter that they got hit by a root/stun, champion is going to finish traveling the full distance but the duration of the root/stun will start ticking down during their movement animation. If the champion has an offensive ability attached to the movement you can bet your ass your are still getting hit with it, because why should something like being outplayed stop you from getting to do your damage.

Hecarim is unstoppable during his ulti.

people keep saying this but i honestly don't see anything in the ability tool tips that states this to be a fact. Like i know i can't stun Malphite out of his ultimate, but i honestly don't see anything saying that Hecarim is unstoppable during the ability.

On this webpage it states:

ACTIVE: Hecarim summons spectral riders and dashes in the target direction with them unstoppably, dealing magic damage to all enemies in their path.

how annoying that it's on a wiki but they couldn't bother to put it in the ability tooltip on his actual character in game.

It is annoying, but it is the same with the AP and AD ratios which also arent shown. Having all that info would probally make the ability description in game very cluttered.

my issue boils down more to the fact that it doesn't mention it on his page if you go to the LoL site, it doesn't mention the unstoppable aspect on other wiki's, so basically you have to go to a "fan" site to find and and it has to be "the right fan site"

It used to be in the tooltip that Hecarim couldn't be CC'd during his ult, but then they changed his ult so that he still get's CC'd but the spell itself is unstoppable. When they changed the way it works I guess they figured it'd be too wordy/already understood and therefore not worth putting in the tooltip. Is it dumb? Yeah I think so.

Hecarim is unstoppable during his ulti.

It was just an example, many champions are not unstoppable and still cant be stopped.

This is indeed a thing with all dashes, bar the exception of Yasuo's. Since the game's launch, dashes have been coded in such a way that they don't get stopped by movement-impairing CC, including stuns and roots, which has allowed mobile champions to eat up a portion of the CC they receive, in addition to being better at dodging CC with their dashes in the first place. Only displacements and knockdown can stop opponents mid-dash, which I suspect has contributed to an arms race halfway through League where knockups started becoming a lot more prevalent. Personally, I think movement-impairing CC should always affect dashes, including slows, unless the champion is unstoppable during, as is the case with Hecarim when he ults. CC has been put more and more on dodgeable abilities, so landing it on a fast-moving target should be especially rewarding, whereas right now it is punished by having said CC get ignored for at least some period of time.

Veigar E and... some other ability (rip memory) can stop dashes as well.

Teridax685 votes

Indeed, Veigar's E got a knockdown added specifically so that it could stop dashes, and iirc all suppresses got that added as well. It's one of those cases where Riot experimented with something, succeeded, but then promptly forgot about it and didn't extend to the rest of the game when it could've had a majorly positive impact.

Yets42402 votes

It's very inconsistent though. Urgot's E has both a knockback/displacement and stun component, yet champions like Fiora, Camile, even Irelia can dash through the stun and are not knocked back, but travel the full distance they would have otherwise-- and then don't even have the good sense to actually be stunned or still CCed at the end.

Completely invalidates the core skill he has which enables all of his damage. Like, he should in theory utterly shit on Camile, but instead she's a hard counter to him because he should never be able to engage on her 1vs1 as she can literally always dash out and ignore his entire kit as a result.

You can buffer her stun with E to flip her while stunned.

Yets42401 votes

Only if she's dumb enough to walk into your E range while trying to stun you.

Z3Sleeper1 votes

Lmfao what the heck did you just say.

Her stun is her dash. If she dashes on you, you flip her. The wind-up of E ignores all CC.

It's undodgeable. Once she starts flying at you she can't stop.

Thus I really don't understand your reply.

MrHaZeYo6 votes

I miss when Ahri could land her Charm(E) on a champion mid dash and it stops them then and there and makes them start walking towards her.

Also, Malph, Shyv, and Hecrim all are unstoppable in their ult casts.

So is Vi, Yi during his dash, Mao during his dash.

Then there are weird things like Ekko and Fizz doing damage with their gap closers before and even regardless of if they actually hit it, so even if you completely interrupt them, by say Thresh Flaying them away, you'll still take the damage anyway.

Some autos have extra range, usually on stuff like auto resets. Maybe this is what you saw.

You cant cancel Ekko's dash because its a blink. And they fixed fizz's q by making it deal damage on contact.

It is funny when you hit someone with a stun, they continue animation, maybe even land hit and then finish their movement and then they are stunned? that makes sense.......no it doesn't. I have had several times where I CC someone and I die from a hit after they are stunned. I grabbed Pyke yesterday with Skarner and yet somehow he still slammed me. I was like wtf? and even the dude playing Pyke said that was the dumbest thing ever. If he is frozen by an ult how can he continue? It showed him frozen in my grab yet he still hit....

At least makes the mechanics make sense. If they get stun, actually stun them unless their ability says they avoid it.

What about caitlyn traps with khazix jump?

Praetor Notorias1 votes

It used to work that way. Back in the day if you stunned them in a dash they stopped precisely where stunned. I have no idea why they changed that except to give chinese love to all the china men that dash all over the place (lee sin).

Automated Riven1 votes

It was for universality. Some stubs stopped you and some did not. So they changed it to be consistent across the board.

Akali is SO HOT1 votes

There are a few abilities that are specifically coded to stop dashes like Veigar's Cage and Cass's Miasma. For all dashes that are not unstoppable the user is still stunned or snared after they finish the dash unless the dash is coded to be interrupted by CC like Yasuo's dash. Mobility can be a vital part of a champion's kit so giving it priority over most CC is good for the champion. You can still CC them at all times outside of the dash.

dashes can be a vital part of some champions kits, and CC can often be the only answer certain champions have against high mobility champions. If i'm playing a champion who has ZERO built in gap closers my answer to your hyper mobile champion is to make sure you can't get in close. If i "stun" you but you still get to end up right next to me then what was the point of the stun to begin with? As i have said before its even more annoying that certain champions not only finish their dash but also get to use any ability they queued up during the dash animation. Not to mention that the CC timer ticks down while they are finishing their animations, so you inherently lose time the champion would be locked down.

I also have issue that some champion can basically phase through CC by "ceasing to exist", while still being allowed to damage or otherwise interact with their opponents.

Thegreatxiu1 votes

So a couple of things. Even if CC stopped movement spells Hecarim's ult is supposed to not be stoppable, or at least it originally was like that. As for how the normal interactions are. I think the thing here is twofold. The first one is that on the hierarchy of CC displacement is at the top and it's basically only displacement that interrupts movement spells. The second thing is an order of operations bit. So I'll use Ezreal's E on Blitz's hook as an example here. First Blitz throws his hook, second Ezreal uses his E, at this point the landing spot has been decided; the spell hasn't finished but the destination has been chosen, then the Blitz hook hits Ezreal, third the displacement on Ezreal starts, finally Ezreal's E finishes and he lands in the spot that was originally decided. His landing spot never changed although he was affected by the CC. This is how most CC's interact with normal dashes. Basically CC is prevents movement but doesn't stop movement.

I have to agree. I don't know how many times that I've landed a Lux Ahri Sona stun / root and still got killed by the movement ability that I should have interrupted.

I remember a time I played Ashe and Yi ran up to me so I ult him right away before he get's in range. In the end I stun him, but his Q still goes out, he waits my whole stun out and just does 2 autoattacks and that's it
