How in the hell do you beat chogath mid
He is ridiculous. Cant beat him unless theres three mid

Anivia, you won't out sustain him, that's impossible. But, she has 600 attack range, an egg which he simply doesn't have enough damage to kill early game, especially under tower. She has great poke, he is a large champion too so very easy to hit. Anivia has some of the best wave clear in the game herself too, so you'll be able to stay somewhat even. Play passive, R farm. You'll be okay. That being said Anivia matches up pretty well with just about any midlaner.
Lux, Vel Koz, even Syndra would be pretty good as well.
I still dont see potential tho, he can stack mr up the ass and maybe not win lane, but not lose it either

Stay out of his ult/silence range, his Q had massive range, but if you were to walk him off it's not possible for him to get close enough to W/R you. You may not win like you said, but you really won't have too much of a problem not losing either.
I agree, waveclear and range is the way to beat Cho'gath. Vel'koz does really well vs Cho mid.
Ganks.
So you NEED ganks to win? "Balanced"
Cho is weak to ganks because he is melee with no movement ability. Also as long as you dodge Rupture you are free to poke him. You might not be able to easily kill him, depending on what you play, but he also won't be killing you. Early boots and mana regen for farming work really well, since most of the time you won't need early damage because, well, you are not gonna kill him.
Later on he shouldn't be a problem unless he got fed early - he fells off HARD, as he needs to get literally in-your face before using his scariest damage ability without any movement aid, rupture can be dodged, and dying just once costs him big part of his only defense - big HP pool. Only scary stuff is when he follows up something like Mal's ult with rupture->flash->scream, that's devastating, but than again most mages can do stuff like this. Finally you can outroam this slow fatso.
TL;DR Yes you probably NEED ganks to win lane against Cho. But you don't NEED to win lane, almost any mid champion outscales him hard.
ganks or playing extremely aggressive as someone who doesn't have TOO bad of sustain problems
I usually only see people use Cho'Gath as a counter pick, and if the enemy later is counterpicking you as Cho'Gath, you're gonna have a hard time.
Draw a mental circle around Cho'Gath with the range of his silence. If you stay outside of it, you're golden. If you get in it...well that's how you die.
