how to play gnar with a list of short, easy steps.

  1. don't be that guy who rushes Bork first. it almost never does you any good. not enough attack speed or damage to justify remaining squishy for so long.

  2. rush a tanky item based on your lane opponent. HP always does wonders.

  3. just because you're about to transform into mega gnar doesn't mean you HAVE to engage. most of the time people are very wary just because you've gone into mega gnar form and will let you free farm.

  4. you really only need one or two damage items late game(bork, bloodthirster for me) everything else should be full on tank so you can eat everything the enemy team throws at you in teamfights

  5. Catch the stupid boomerangs. you're crippling yourself if you don't. and the boomerangs work very similar to draven's axes. don't be afraid to use your e if you get too far out of position to catch it.

I'd personally recommend trying out item 3078. Getting a phage on first back really helps your chase and kite as mini-gnar, and it gives you pretty much everything you want in terms of damage for the game once you finish it. Depending on the opponent some defensive stats may be necessary early instead, but in general I've found that TriForce is a good catch-all item for the fuzzball.

I think Frozen Mallet is a better option

I have played a good amount of Gnar and have done quite well. I love to use CDR runes and masteries. NON-STOP BOOMERANG!!!!! I am not too keen on trinity force, it is expensive and he does not really need it. Your boomerang already offers a continuous slow and early to early-mid I stay too far away to use the sheen proc too much. Tri is not a bad item I just like to get tanky faster.

I rush giant's belt to sunfire, which helps against AP(the health) and AD. Next, I do shoes and the only offensive item, Botrk. Then I get all defense items according to who we are playing against.

I think a second damage item at least is a good idea, He's already pretty tough as Mega Gnar, and can get away pretty well with Mini, that you want to keep a little damage. Providing enemy team isnt uber fed, and you have a decent team, no need to sacrifice his real damage potential, IMO

Generally I build like so

On my first back I get the cutlass that later builds into Botrk, for some damage and lifesteal.

After that I build a few pieces of the Frozen Mallet. Start with the Belt, then the pickaxe.

From here I can either keep on the Frozen mallet, or build towards a sunfire first if the enemy is a little fed and doing well.

My core items in general completed order (barring getting fed and doing whatever the hell I want) Frozen Mallet - Botrk - Sunfire - Black Cleaver - (Last is situational, GA if I need survivability, Maw of Mort if they have a fed AP, anything random I think I want/need elsewise, depends on whats going on)

If the match is tough I'll sunfire before Botrk, or against a mean AP carry I may Maw in place of Botrk

I just noticed most my Gnar matches are over before I ever finish the Cutlass into Botrk. Most the other stuff comes first
