Shed Some Light on Shen's Place in the Current Meta

We all know that shen is your traditional tank, no? But say if you we're to take a glimpse of him for the first time, what would your expectations be? He is a ninja, I for one expected speed, stealth, high burst and other ninja-y traits. But it was only after I bought him I became aware of this, nevertheless I still adore him but feel he still doesn't fit the tank role in terms of appearance and his play style lacks tankyness.

Aside from that his gameplay style is very outdated, with a lot of inconsistencies within it.

For a tank shen has 1 of the Weakest defense abilities in game, even Diana has a stronger shield than him (provided she stays in combat) and the costs aren't very energy friendly. I wouldn't want a champ with such a pewnie shield to hold my frontline.

He is the only tank to have just 1 form of CC. A very hard to hit CC at that, which deals minor dmg yet has a long cooldown.

Yasuo's steel tempest is a jab. Shen's vorpal blade is a projectile. They both share the same range of 475 units. See what I am getting at here? In no way should Yasuo's jab be the same range as shen's Q. This is suppose to be his all around safe tool, poking from a far or healing up close. It does minor damage to be of a threat and many melee champions today can close the 475 unit gap or attack surpass that range with some ability. If your gonna make him slow with the arguable "335" you might as well buff the VB range from 475 to 525.

I for one would expect a lot more from his kit for not having a damage ultimate. I mean even Sion out scales Shen in tankyness at all aspects of the game. Survivability is a very small factor that is pair with overall strength. So champs who have good sustain will still get shutdown to champs who have strengths in more prevalent areas in both the laning phase and roaming phase".

Shen's position in the current meta:

Shen is a top tier bench warmer currently.

This. Shen needs a rework. His abilities can stay the same, just change how they interact.

To be honest, I like Shen for an AP tank jungler.

His ratios are very poopy, but I believe that's the best way to get the most out of him. The R shield is just... massive.

On an off note, something you should try is AP Shen top with a Nocturne jungler. Having him dive and take zero damage is just the most appeasing feeling ever.

Shen's place in the meta is on the bench with almost every other tank.

I don't think his kit is where the problems come from though. Gotta look at itemization and melee/ranged top lane balance.

Alistar is a tank and is a fun favorite for top and sometimes support. He has good burst, a nice heal, and is just hard to kill.

Amumu is a nice pick for the jungle. Good burst as well, and does nice when in need for a gank.

Blitzcrank is THE pick for a support. His grab + stun is perfect for picking off enemies.

Chogath is good for top and jungle. His poke and power + his sustain.

Galio can be used top, mid, and as support. He's good with poke and does a nice burst.

JarvanIV is a good pick for top and can be used in the jungle. He is the only tank to use AD and has good burst.

Leona is mainly used for support but can be used top. Good burst and hard to kill.

Malphite is used in top, jungle, and can be a support. He has good burst and power.

Maokai is used in top, jungle, and can be used in mid lane. He has good poke and is hard to kill.

Nautilus is mostly used in jungle, but can support. He has good power and burst.

Rammus is mainly used in jungle or top, but can support. He is good for burst, is hard to kill, and has good power.

Sejuani (now buffed) is used for top and jungle. She has good burst and poke.

Shen is used for top and can support. He has fair poke, sustain, and can be hard to kill. (But, like the person said...)

Singed is used only for top. Has good poke and power.

Zac is used mainly for jungle but can top. He has some poke, and fair burst. (He has no real sustain for his ability costs. And is most likely in need for a buff for his passive and needs an added passive to his W so that for every 0.05% of AP he gains bonus health regen.)

The vast majority of the champions you list rarely see serious play. In terms of high elo meta today:

JarvanIV is quite strong, but he's really a fighter that's mislabeled as a tank. Maokai is an okay but not great top. Sejuani is an okay but not great jungler. Alistar Leona are niche supports that see some play. Alistar top is long dead, killed by the W+AA nerf.

Shen some light?

Sorry, that was bad.

I don't even top lane Shen anymore. Too many champs push him into the turret early game which makes it extremely hard to cs. Some champs just absolutely dominate him and you have no chance from the start. This is not fun and I play to have fun. Win or Lose.

I just jungle Shen, the ganks are mediocre (they can be devastating if done right), his movement speed is slow but he doesn't take a beating in the jungle and he can escape through the jungle walls with his dash if needed. His ult is also nice to have in the jungle since being interrupted would be rare, it also lets me have more map awareness since I'm not focused on last hitting minions. Whats not to like, having a tanky jungle shen show up "out of fuckin' nowhere".

Typically tho, I only do this with friends because your average League player wants, LCSBIGPLAYS-BIGMONEY-BIGGANKS aka "Lee Sin"

If Shen is to be buffed/reworked, I think he should have multiple rolls and Jungling should be one of them.

Well, I always thought of him as Top Lane Peeler Tank that protects his ADC instead of initiating.

rammus does that waaaaay better plus rammus has killer initiates

Well he does get unkillable quite fast. build sunfire and wits end, you are already crazy hard to kill. randuins banshees boots and thornmail/frozen mallet(more offensive or defensive) and he is harder to kill than mundo i swear. if you want to be able to have a bigger shield and such, try my ap damage tank build that I have found works quite well. you still start sunfire, but then you can pretty much get whatever: rylais, sunfire, abyssal scepter, raundins, merc treads, nashors/wits end(if you reallly need the mr, get ninja tabi instead) that way he does actually a lot of damage, his heal is nice, and he is still tanky and his shield is big. Don't forget his ult will double the health of your carry(not really, but it seems like it to the enemy team)

Although I do agree he needs some buffs to range and base items(perhaps change ratios from ap to armor and mr, like taric?)

I find shen useless in top lane.

He cant kill me and i cant kill him, but when he ults i'm taking 1-2 towers from him and feed on the excess farm he left me uncontested.

Jolly Rogered1 votes

This is true. If Shen didn't take TP as a spell, the first moment he ults there goes your tower, possibly your second tower if Shen dies saving his allies.

Shen's got basically no position in the meta with all his nerfs from his time at the top

His greatest strength (global ult) is redundant with TP buffs

Compared to other tanks, I suppose he's a better duelist than a good chunk of tanks thanks to sustain and damage passive that scale on his tankiness

Unfortunately...kind of a moot point in teamfights.

Sure he can probably 1v1 that enemy Maokai eventually but Maokai can facetank his entire team while Shen doesn't do much

Sure he can probably 1v1 that enemy Zed when splitpushing but that's not gonna do much if he misses his really narrow taunt and Zed kills his ADC in teamfights

I wish they'd bring back his old values on shield strength and taunt width. Heck, give better stats too. I think he's got among the top 5 lowest armor/level's in the game and he's also plagued as a melee with no scaling MR

Heck, bring back his Q damage too. Before he was very powerful in lane, able to bully ppl to ensure he could secure lane dominance to ult to bot lane. Nowadays the only ppl he can bully are ppl who have REALLY bad early-games, otherwise all he'll do is go even or lose lane and just be an ult-bot he hopes the enemy doesn't interrupt

pls update shy1 votes

After a bunch of games as Shen top where I got shoved to tower I frankly gave up and decided to try jungle Shen and was pleasantly surprised. I use my Ad rune page (2 AS quints, 1 Ad quint, ad reds, armor yellows, mr blues) and go 21/9/0 AD masteries. I build the Rangers Trailblazer + Devourer, Merc Treads or Ninja Tabi, Triforce, Wits End, and then full tank after that. Normally Sunfire cape or Spirit Visage. His first clear is pretty slow but he makes up for it by having enough health to gank at 3 especially if you go heal up on the scuttle crab. The amount of sustained damage you can do in a fight is actually pretty good, and the Triforce proc does a ton of damage to squishy targets.

he's a good duelist once he gets a couple items but yeah he gets punished early by most top laners. good luck against vlad, thats the worst fucking match-up

Honestly, I think Shen just needs a new base kit. MR per level, slightly more health, and at least 345 MS.

Passive: Feint

Shen takes X% less damage from auto attacks and Y% less damage from AoE spells/abilities. After taking damage from 10 such attacks, Shen gains stealth for 1.5 seconds. Attacking or casting a spell breaks the stealth immediately. The first auto attack Shen makes after Stealth strikes all enemies around him and restores 20 Energy. While stealthed, Shen gains 30% Movement speed and can move through units.

I think this idea (feinting in and out of combat using stealth to reposition) is a fun "Ninja" reward for Shen doing his job and tanking. Mobility should be a thing for Shen as a ninja tank, not necessarily damage. (He's not an assassin.)

Q: Vorpal Blade

Make this have some counterplay and beef it up just a tad. So, linear skill shot, affects first target struck. Shen throws his blade in a straight line, striking the first enemy it hits for 60/100/140/180/220(+40% Bonus AD)(+40% AP). If Shen hits a target, he may cast "Shadow Strike" for a limited time.

Shadow Strike: Shen strikes from the Shadows, appearing behind his target and attacking them, dealing bonus magic damage equal to 4/5/6/7/8% of the target's max health and healing for the same amount.

W: Ki-Strike

Shen's next attack deals bonus magic damage equal to 35/40/45/50/55% AD (+10% Shen's bonus Health).

E: Shadow Dash

Shen dashes a short distance, cutting everything in his path dealing 30/60/90/120/150(+50%AP). Minions and monsters take double damage from this attack. Enemy Champions struck by this attack are taunted and must attack Shen for 1/1.25/1.5/1.75/2 seconds. Each enemy champion hit by this attack restores 30 Energy.

R: Stand United

Shen shields target ally for 200/300/400(+10% Shen's max Health)(+80%AP). After channeling for 3 seconds, Shen teleports to the ally. While Shen is channeling his Shield, all auto attacks and AoE spells/abilities vs the target of his shield counts as attacks against Shen for stacking his passive.

This makes Shen very mobile (like a ninja), and doesn't give him too much damage. He gets rewarded for drawing aggro with the ability to re-position quickly. He also has a good amount of tools for escape if he needs to split push. Thoughts?

I say make his abilities scale off of maximum HP or something like that.
