Remember when Ziggs was the most "OP" Champ?
So I was just playing a match of Ziggs, and as I'm contemplating whether on not it's worth it to ult that big minion wave so none of us have to relieve pressure mid, I'm struck with the memory of watching pro LoL back in Season 4. And there was a single Champion being picked and banned by nearly every team in nearly every game, and being a deciding factor in all of them; the very definition of OP. Ziggs. What's really interesting to me is why he was OP. It wasn't because he was insanely mobile, or was inescapably one-shotting people, or because he had %hp true damage. It was a single, simple thing that a few Champions had (and still have) that he just happened to be the best at: strong, safe waveclear. That's it. That's all he did. Push waves forever. But that was all it took to get clapped with the nerfhammer. These days Ziggs is pretty much the same, but the only thing people really call him op for is killing towers too fast. And even that isn't really relevant now that any jungler can oneshot towers by grabbing new Herald.
This really speaks to how the game has changed, in (in my opinion) a really negative way. League used to be a game about siegeing objectives. Taking towers to gain control of the map and push down the nexus. One of the biggest pieces of advice vets would give to newbies is "League isn't team deathmatch in CoD. You're here for objectives, not kills." People still give that advice but... it's simply not true anymore. Look at who are considered the most OP Champs now compared to then. It's the ones who can get to the fight the fastest, and kill enemies the easiest. League is TDM now, and that's what Riot wants. Sure, the game is ostensibly still about knocking over towers and blowing the nexus, but those two things are so hilariously easy to do now that the only thing stopping one team from doing so is the other team blocking them with their face. "Death is the best cc" has been a meme since alpha (probably) but now it's genuinely and non-meme-y the name of the game. The enemy team can't protect their wet paper towel structures if they're dead. And that's the game now. All it takes to run a match into the ground is to kill the enemy once, because that gets you 2, 3, 4, literally every objective or more. Whoever kills the enemy first wins. And it's sad.
