A thing or two that League and Dota 2 can learn from each other.

Doctor Dyment··28 votes·6,945 views

Please don't write me off immediately as a hater of Riot or a hater of Dota, as I love both. But after five years worth of League, I started play Dota 2. I enjoy it, but I feel that it could use a few things to help it improve. Some things that Riot has in League, and League needs some things from Dota to help it improve. So here is is, What League can work on: Customization: League is a game where you buy a skin, and then you have it. In Dota, you can customize your character to the max. Changing the wards, the headdress, armor, arms, legs, pretty much everything about it. This allows you to put all your favorite pieces unto your favorite characters. Community Market: A community market where players can sell each other their individual skins for less than normal store prices. All Riot would have to do to earn profit would be to take a little bit out of what the seller asks for. In Game Responses: Dota 2's characters feel very alive. They speak when meeting each other, say things after killing people and minions, and even have quotes for killing rivals. There are so many different combinations of voice lines that your character can say, that you feel like you are playing a real life person. League needs a bit of this in the normal game, eh? In Game Guides: New players who are trying to get a hold of the game have to constantly tab out to check a guide. Just allow people to place guides within the game, then that problem is solved by itself. What Dota 2 can work on: A More Dedicated Team: Not to say that Dota 2 does not have a dedicated team or anything, but they simply cannot compete with Riot Games's level of watchfulness or player to creator suggestions. Not to bash Valve, but that is exactly what I am going to do. Valve's use of free movement between projects can severely hurt a game's progress forward. Good for the developers, bad for the players. A Bit More Simplicity: Dota 2... is a complex game. There are so many god damn item combinations, the stats are weird, some items are just items but when interacting with another special item they gain different properties, all of these things. Buying items can be a struggle sometimes, because you actually have to know what the six or seven tiny icons at the bottom of the screen actually mean. And a lot of the time, they don't really make sense. Strength gives you health and increases damage, but only Agility can give you armor, and Intelligence gives you more mana but doesn't actually change what your abilities do... all of these kinds of things. This is a very major problem that is where most newer players have to drop out of, and go back to more easy to read games like League. Toaster Friendliness: Dota 2 is NOT toaster friendly in the slightest. Unless you have a great computer, chances are that you will be running on a really low graphical setting which makes the environment look only a bit like pudding with lego bricks inside of it. And even at max settings, Dota 2 doesn't really look all that great, as apposed to League that looks absolutely stunning at max graphics. (For an MMORPG)

I feel that both games are equal in how fun they are to play. Both have good strengths and bad weaknesses. But I enjoy both of them, and if you are up to the challenge, I hope that you can have fun with both of them too.

What i would like to see in lol is more diverse items.

I mean dota have items that have actives that increses magic dmg delt by 25% An item with an active that refreshes all your cooldowns An item with an active that lowers your armor and lowers the enemys armor by the same amount. (early game item) An item with an active that works like a 100% dmg return thornmail.

I mean the most interesting item lol have is Ludens echo or zhonyas (dota also have zhonyas)

All of those would require serious champion reworks for balance purposes. Items should be a part of the balance of the game, but not the defining factor. This is why releasing items to counter other popular items is not always the best idea.

Im not saying that they should add those items. Im saying that lol have really boring items. Those were examples of cool items. Items that change the way you play in quite a major way. Even dawngate had more fun item. HoN have more fun items.

Lol has really flat items and the ones that are interesting such as ohm-wrecker and zzrots portal and even in some cases baner of command are never bought because they aint viable.

This is true. The items in LoL are not very interesting. But the problem with some items that would follow this design philosophy would not be able to be balanced without large amounts of reworks to accommodate such items, or as you said, to make the items so undertuned or underpowered that it's never really thought viable. Imagine a world where Zz'rot's portal is not so undertuned, but instead, is a viable item. Playing with this item does not create very interesting gameplay, and is infuriating to play against. Adding more items like this would not solve the problem, but instead increase it.

how is it infuriating to play against?

It's infuriating for me to try to gank LeBlanc as Hecarim/Yi/one of the many bruisers who don't have a point and click stun along with a gapcloser, which is basically all of them because I can't do shit as she dashes away with 2341241234144 blinks but does that mean I want LeBlanc to get Olafed or deleted?

What you are saying is obviously hyperbole, and your emotions on it are exaggerated. There are things that you can do to combat it (though I still think LeBlanc is annoying as hell). When an item is popular that has little interaction becomes popular, it makes the game miserable. Why? The game becomes entirely about clearing the newly created waves, and pushing against it with your own. It makes the game almost entirely about waveclear. We've had a glimpse of this when Ziggs was a really popular pick, and a large amount of the playerbase do generally agree that it was horrendous.

For another example, as I'm sure you'll want, let's take an item that is being suggested to be taken from DotA and added to LoL instead of one that is already there. An item that refreshes all of your cooldowns. This would make team-fighting way too risky, and champions with lower cooldowns would have very little advantage over a lot of other champions. Some abilities, such as Veigar's Event Horizon, Anivia's Crystalise or a large amount of ultimates, are supposed to be gated by cooldowns. If they're not, they can become very infuriating and rather broken. These champions could be prioritised way higher than they should be entirely around this 1 item. Having the meta be defined by a single item is not really a healthy meta. The closest that we are currently is Trinity Force (and League of Warmogs, which is something I'm sure everyone wants to forget).

refresher orb has a 5 minute cooldown. you play around it like you play around flash, except this 5 minute cooldown costs 5000+ gold. you can also suppress people's gold income and prevent them from getting it in time to be relevant. that is counterplay - playing to make the enemy irrelevant and minimize their strengths while maximizing your own strengths. It doesn't have to be mechanical counterplay with dodge the skillshot.

whats the difference between every team having to have marksmen and every team having to have waveclear? There is no difference. In fact, if ZZrot portal became popular, we might even see double AP, no marksmen team comps or Sivir/Corki becoming super popular because waveclear would become so important that you can't risk having only 1 long range waveclearer on the team. You play around it. There's nothing you can do to play around league of hypermobile glass cannons that you can never catch.

Your suggestions make stale gameplay that becomes uninteresting very quickly. The Zz'rot's portal would make waveclear overly powerful. It makes some champions not worth playing and alienate these champions due to the power of a single item in the game. Very unhealthy.

I find that to be completely untrue. Marksmen are very powerful, especially against tanky champions, though tanks are more popular than ever.

ok then play a team with a tank bot lane instead of a marksmen.

you can't.

there's pro teams with zero tanks winning all the time but there has never been a team that won without a marksman.

You can play without a marksman just fine. The reason why we don't see it in professional play is that they have a massive amount of practice and experience using a marksman, and the marksman has a great role of dealing sustained damage. They would need a lot of practice with a team composition that didn't use a marksman to come up to the amount of experience and knowledge that they have with one, and choosing to devote so much to an incredibly risky 1-off strategy is not worth it. It's why we don't see as much deviation in high-tier pro plays, since they don't have much reason to take such large risks that can lose them games that they should have won.

BluePolarizer1 votes

thats a copout. Teams never had practice with 2v1 lane swaps or double jungle, yet it happens in LCS all the time now. Teams never had 0 tank teams before, especially in season 2, then they switched to bruiser/assassin.

This is just incorrect. This is the reason leagues has a boring small item pool.

You balance champions to each other excluding items. Once this is done you add items. Leagues has a slightly higher problem with this because of the way champions scale off of stats but the concept is still the same. Items have a separate value from champ balancing because every champion can get any item. There should be a BKB in the game, O KatarinaAnnieFizz are on a overly fed rampage well guess I need to counter that, build a BKB early and continue farming for dmg. And whats worse, is once Leagues does have a decent item they tend to get rid of it. DFG was a good caster item that shouldve been countered with items not having been removed. The previous magic resist/health regen item (the name escapes me atm sorry) that was great for tanks without mobility and honestly one of the few decent MR items was removed for no other reason then it had stats that were "All over the place" (move speed shouldnt be with MR and health regen they said).

Leagues needs more at the moment or else the game will stay stagnant and rely soully on champion balance which with every minor shift bring the game into a different state of Tanks oppressive assassins oppressive yada yada. The game needs to get more items to help counter oppression rather then taking items that add flavor out.

I never disagreed that the items in League are uninteresting. What I am saying, is that the suggestions for items is not thought out. People who complained about DFG being removed forget the reason as to why it was removed in the first place. It made assassins able to kill off targets very effectively with their targets being unable to counter it in any meaningful way. It's the same reason assassins don't have silences any more.

Also, having an item that can deny all magic damage for a certain period of time would make burst champions have less reason to play. You would be better off playing a champion that couldn't be countered so easily. Currently we have Zonya's Hourglass, which is hardly an interesting item. Boring stats on it too. However, adding an item that works better than it against magic damage dealers would make them a lot less reliable, and make assassin-type champions unable to kill any target at 15+ minutes without burning through BKB and Zonya's. And with the reliance for assassins to use their ultimates for effective kills, it really kills the role. Your suggestion is similar to a lot of other items that have been proposed. It causes some champions to be alienated in an attempt to "fix" a problem that isn't really problematic in the first place. We do need more items, but they need to be thought out more than the community generally tends to.

Changing the wards, the headdress, armor, arms, legs, pretty much everything about it. This allows you to put all your favorite pieces unto your favorite characters.

The 'skins' in dota aren't league skins, they're chroma level. You can't get "definitely not Pudge" or "Woad" Drow over there. The fidelity is low because DotA outsources their skins a lot. They outsource their skins a lot because they don't have much of a dedicated team, unlike Riot. If Riot did their skins the way DotA did, we'd either have shitty skins that could be mixed and matched or we'd have shitty mix&match pieces of our good skins, because our good skins do not mix and match well, because they're not designed to be low-quality enough to be interchangeable.

Community Market: A community market where players can sell each other their individual skins for less than normal store prices. All Riot would have to do to earn profit would be to take a little bit out of what the seller asks for.

OMG, pls NO. This ends up devaluing skins that're fairly common creating 'vendor trash' skins, as has happened in DotA and TF2. Please keep this out of League.

Also, your point on "All Riot would have to do to earn a profit" is bull. The only way they don't lose RP on this is if players can only sell to each other for full price, which players would not receive well.

Sure, a bit, I'll give you this one, I think. Otoh, Dota's announcer is so setting breaking its ridiculous. "Holy shit" "Mega kill", these things always jar me in the Dota setting because modern swearwords and modern adjectives do that. I really really feel like I'm a gamer playing a game when I hear them in Dota, and it's annoying.

In Game Guides: New players who are trying to get a hold of the game have to constantly tab out to check a guide. Just allow people to place guides within the game, then that problem is solved by itself.

I....idk, having tried the DotA guides, I'm not sure they really felt that much better than exploring on my own, and I certainly didn't have time to read much mid-game. Outside game but in-client guides are an idea, but DotA defaults to fullscreen even while out of game, while League doesn't so that you can run a browser while waiting for games. I've got mixed feelings on this one, and can't really say for sure if it'd be bad or good.

This is a very major problem that is where most newer players have to drop out of, and go back to more easy to read games like League.

Idk, Dota is it's own beast and changing it runs into the question of how do you keep it "more dota, not league"-like while making it also less complex and more elegant.

I feel that both games are equal in how fun they are to play. Both have good strengths and bad weaknesses. But I enjoy both of them, and if you are up to the challenge, I hope that you can have fun with both of them too.

I'm partial to League myself, but such is life.

Eddiot2 votes

I on'y really disagree with the simplicity part, remove these things and many of the bits the league removed to become league are gone and Dota2 becomes a more direct competitor with league which I don't feel would be health for the genre. Dota2 also does a much better job of giving you the information you need in game then league for example when I want to learn more about an enemy champion, I can't, I have to wait till after I game instead of having the information right there by chicking on the hero and mousing over their skills for basic info and Alt+Mousing over for detailed information.

Hellioning2 votes

DotA's approach to cosmetics would not work in League unless they start A) cutting skins up into pieces or B) letting skins randomly drop. That's the primary way that the community market makes sense; you get a random drop for a hero you don't play, so you sell it for steam market funds to get a thing for a hero you do play.

MLDzXnRRR2 votes

LOL has better champion design and more dynamic gameplay (most of the dota's heroes are just boring to play - especially the agility heroes - + snowballing is really fast - give 1 kill to a carry = gg). Itemisation is pretty bad in Lol, also the new dragon and baron buffs are too strong.

mi ramfan3 votes

DotA's champion design isn't "worse" than LoL's in most cases, it's just different. Whereas Riot's philosophy is to keep things somewhat close to the box to minimize negative impacts on gameplay, Valve/Icefrog's philosophy is to maximize positives. As a result, many DotA heroes feel much more thematically coherent than League's champions, and there are more DotA heroes that are completely unique within the game then there are in DotA.

The min-maxed hero design leads to individual heroes having much better defined strengths and weaknesses than in League, but weaknesses still need to be covered. DotA 2's item system leads to much more diverse playstyles for single heroes than League can achieve.

Their style does have weaknesses. The large number of active items are sometimes hard for new players to learn to use, and the heroes being more min-maxed leads to more hard counter/unwinnable matchups. And there's DotA's other questionable design mechanics in play, which are well discussed enough that I won't go into them here. But while DotA's hero/champion design philosophy is different, whether it's better or not is a matter of opinion.

CubedJustice3 votes

Whereas Riot's philosophy is to keep things somewhat close to the box to minimize negative impacts on gameplay, Valve/Icefrog's philosophy is to maximize positives.

This. Riot loves to nerf things. If things are too strong, Riot nerfs them. Dota, however, instead of nerfing strong things, just brings everything else up to par with the overly strong thing. Which I much say takes balls, because that's risky.

Eddiot2 votes

It is less buffing everything up to high levels(for that look at Dota:Chaos) as in dota2 they are more willing to let you have truly, or well closer to truly unstoppable power levels then league.

BluePolarizer1 votes

wrong. You can shut down carries way more effectively in DOTA than league. In league, trading a bruiser 1 for 1 with a carry is bad, but in DOTA, trading a bruiser 1 for 1 with a carry can be good or bad because you get to reduce their gold income.

The stats are from Warcraft 3 Strength: HP + HP regen

Agility: Attack speed + armor

Intelligence: Mana + mana regen

  • whatever the main attribute/stat is gives damage (some heroes gain damage from strength others from agility or intelligence)

That was how it was in Warcraft 3 at least

Oh and intelligence doesn't really have to affect the spells as they are strong enough as they are... however they are often heavily mana gated which intelligence helps with

Doctor Dyment2 votes

Yeah, I understand the stats now. But at first they confused me to almost no end.

Stonington1 votes

Yeah, that's pretty on point. Also a replay system.

Let me nitpick a few points though. Dota should get some fun or silly skins. Apparently the community threw a shit fit when they released a noncannon skin and now they can never have those. Customization of skins is kinda meh. It's cool for dota, but the lol skins have more personality. You also can't simplify dota. There's such a long history behind the balancing process of the game. While I agree the complexity of the game makes it less fun for me to play, you can't take the complexity away and keep the game balanced.

Also think both games look gorgeous, but I heavily prefer LoL's artstyle. it reminds me of Ultima 7 for whatever the reason. I dunno why, I've always really liked LoL's artstyle more.

CubedJustice1 votes

The problem with silly skins in dota is that, let's say you have those awesome bracers and shoulder guards for Morphling from the Ancient Armor set. Then you take a chef's hat and make the whole thing look like garbage because it doesn't mesh well.

Dota doesn't allow skins that break out of the spirit of the hero. LIke alpine ursa which made the bear a cowboy received so much negative attention that it was pulled from the store (now the set is worth like 300$+ if u were lucky enough to have picked it up). So you won't see awesome war bracers matched with a silly chef hat. Sometimes i wish dota has more silly skins (pool party, etc), but i like that the game immersion stays pretty even keel and skins are subtle most times. I mean dota would be down hill if it started to look like TF2

League can use more counterplay ( Items like BKB Blade Mail Blink Dagger Support Zhonyas Items that grant disables ), less mobility creep, more intelligent community and more active items.

Int that something lol can learn form dota? Seriously though. there are so many more team comps in dota that center around teamfight combos than in lol and allot more aoe teamfight spells in dota not to speak of veil of discord and refresher orb both there to make tramfight heroes even stronger.

YOU BEEN WARNED2 votes

No I mean as in champion combos, the most fluid auto attack resetting tool I've seen in DotA2 was tidal hunter's E; for example.

Take a look at Jayce's kit and his ability combo sequences & fluidity. Really, most of league of legends' champions don't feel clunky when compared to DotA2's heroes.

Jigglebone2 votes

Tidehunter's E does not reset auto attacks it's just how the animation looks.

Abilities in Dota 2 are normally meant to be used in multiple ways instead of league where characters have a "standard" combo they do most of the time for example think of Mirana and how her kit works together (Look her up if you need to), Her standard combo is W-E-Q to initiate but she also has combos to escape like E-W or E-R or ones for pushing like E-Q, Most league heroes have moves that are for a specific function meanwhile Dota 2 heroes have more of a varied use for them.

ye no i never liked the concept of dota just being able to buy tiny parts of a set. either a complete set or no skin at all

You can buy complete sets or find single parts randomly ala TF2's item drop system. It gives cosmetic options to new players and encourages them to spend money without completely shafting the customer like Riot does. (No viewing the skin's model in the client, Absolutely disgusting champion pricing structure, inability to buy RP in the same increments you spend it in, etc, etc)

That is an enormous beast to tame. Voice actors for older champions may not be inclined to add more lines to the champion, for whatever reason, and then Riot would have to get a new voice actor, with a new voice, and then multiple champions would sound different. Not necessarily better, just different. And some people get very salty about changes of that sort, such as the lore retcon.

This might just be me, but is Dota's map super hard to look at for anyone else? It seems like all the creeps and champs blend into the background and surroundings and I often find myself losing my champ or not seeing cs when I play, unlike league, where the minions are bright blue/red and easy to tell apart from the green of the lane. Same for champs, they're very easy to spot. Everything in Dota kinda turns into a muddled brown.

This is just you. LoL tries to hard with its hyper saturated colors. I'm glad the map got a slight rework to bring the colors more inline with dawngate/dota. If you can't tell the difference between a creep and a enemy hero in game (esp a you're own hero) you've got some real problems...

The simplicity part I disagree becuz you want more diversity in mobas not everyone is the same. If you make LoL and Dota 2 so similar what's the point of playing another?
