Living Life as a Noxian Soldier

Doctor Dyment··59 votes·11,585 views

You are but a foot soldier for the Noxian army. You are a new recruit, and have yet to kill anyone. You have been thrust into a battle that was all but won once you arrived. Mangled bodies litter the floors and walls of this once proud Demacian fort. You step inside, and see your Grand General. You quickly bow to him, but he merely passes his hand to the side and tells you that such formality is not needed currently. Amazed that your Grand General just spoke to you, you ask what caused this destruction. He points to a large building where the bright orange licks of flame that mark instability are seen. You begin to walk towards it, before the tower collapses. A single man falls to your feet, a Demacian. He looks up to you and lets out a last pitiful "Help" before he is crushed by a mighty boot. You gaze up in shock and fear, and see a creature of nightmares. He towers over any of the other troops and cracks line his skin like the pavement. In his hand he clutches a large ax, still wet with blood. You attempt to back away before he looks at you. A crude metal trinket is lodged into his jaw, must be painful you think. You gaze into his eyes, and see the shadow of a man. A man who served his people, and was created into a monster because of it. His eyes are dark red, and are dull, without life. No matter how hard you search, there is no life in his eyes. Gazing into this lifeless shell screams in mere seconds what ages of petty speeches and ancient tomes could not. What greets your sight is a life of pain. This former man, now beast of blood, knows pain beyond belief. It doesn't take a scientist to know he is especially well rehearsed on how to make others feel it. You feel your heart plummet down to your feet, immediately rise to your throat, and then fall again. He looks at you and simply walks away. You tremble in fear as he stalks away, crushing rubble as he walks. Your Grand General walks up to you and says, "Welcome to Noxus recruit. This is Sion."

In Noxus, while formality isn't as important when you compare it to Demacia's, you don't get excused for any failures and the punishment is always something worse than death, because death is the promotion there.

So be prepared.

Noxus also does not excuse victory either, and any victory will let you climb up the ladder, regardless of the method used. While Demacia will most likely only accept the most clean-looking Victory to preserve their "good and right and just" image, Noxus care not about formality and will reward you for your achievement. And if there's one thing you can be sure about Noxus is that it is fair to everyone. Everyone is given equal opportunity to succeed and climb the social and economic structure regardless of your background. Even a homeless broke man with a peg leg can and will be respected for his achievement, and even the richest, most endowed spoiled kid can and will be put down if he doesnt hold up, regardless of how much money he has or how much political power his father have.

First of all, that's cave men's mentality, if everything is valued through strength.

Secondly, abusing money, title and ironfist black and white laws is exactly the same as bragging about your 6 packs, equally 10,000 BC.

Demacia and Noxus are just equally filthy and stupid in their own way, none is better than another and I would choose neither.

terkmc5 votes

Not strength as in physical strength, strength as in being good at what you do. Swain is definitely not strong physically, but he's the best at what he does so he get his position as the top guy at what he does, which is generally what we want, people getting the position and reward corresponding to their ability, not from their title, not from them being born into a position, not from them happened to be born into a rich family, not from them looking better than others.

SEKAI1 votes

Noxus has nothing to set it apart from the shark's womb, the strongest gets to be born and that's it. A society like that will never improve besides inventing new shiny ways to blow things up.

Same with Demacia's since they pretty much don't embrace any change or any disagreement to their ironfist ruling, so they will just get stuck where they are forever too.

Hence why I am actually not so keen on both of them tbh.

It's based on competence. A showdown between two bakers is more likely to be a bake-off than an axefight.

Noxus cares little for the emotion or feelings of others. They value determination, blind rage, and heroics. This is why they are so difficult to defeat on the battlefield because they train every soldier to forget the human qualities that they see as weakness when confronted with either victory or defeat. Victory is won through blood, not tears.

Uh... like five to ten minutes? I just thought of it and wanted to write it down.

And at Riot there are actually PAID writers that can't come up with ANYTHING for MONTHS while one dude just gets something as awesome as this down in mere minutes.

Wow.

Well technically he DOES care... Sorta... It's hard to explain really, fact of the matter is that he fight for Noxus, he care not for the reason, if Noxus is involved, you can expect him to be in the front of the lines, showing that even death cannot stop even the mightiest of Noxian soldiers. And while it would make sense that he could take on the Demencian army all by himself, I also doubt he would do anything to harm his own armies numbers, there is no honor in killing a soldier who was fighting by your side.

On the surface, probably. Then again, Demacia was always more on the image of being the "good guys". See Lux. Or at least Lux before nothing came about with the narrative.

BodyByDave1 votes

You think Demacia is nicer? Perhaps they are painted in a brighter light with their gold and bright hues, but they are just as evil/far worse than Noxus.

Ask yourself which is really more like the country you know and love? Really think about it.

Yeah I would obviously love to be a part of the city-state that takes our ancient heroes, morphs them into tortured, deathless, husks and is widely known as the place that commits war crimes daily. There is also the whole "people getting stabbed on the street" daily thing they have going on.

Or... I could be a part of the city-state where the primary code of conduct is to follow the golden rule, be honorable and shit and have unwaivering faith and courage for your city-state. They even go so far as to adopt the people from other areas into their state such as Poppy Shyvana Sona Kayle Lucian Taric XinZhao

Tough call, tough call.

As for the whole corruption thing, I will let you enlighten me on that one.

OneMoreDaySK1 votes

Wait, I thought Sona goes on tour everywhere.

JusticePauldrons1 votes

Sona was adopted into a Demacian family. Sona originally lived in an Ionian Orphanage.

OneMoreDaySK1 votes

But after her adoptive mom died (potentially due to a bloodthirsty etwahl), I thought she joined the [CONTINUITY REMOVED] and then went on tour everywhere.

BodyByDave2 votes

Mix the two ideals together and you get our United States of America.

Idiot zealots hell bent on expansion and worldly acceptance on one hand. A Darwinian "The strongest earn their keep" on the other.

Plus you say they corrupted Sion? Sion died on the battlefield as a hero for his country. That's right, dead. They tried some stuff with his remains because few have represented his homeland such as he.

Just because one is dark black and red and the other is bright blue and gold doesn't mean one is inherently evil and the other isn't.

I like to think that Riot (before they gutted it) gave us a pretty decent story to interpret for ourselves.

JusticePauldrons3 votes

They took a nations hero and turned him into a bloodthirsty zombie who can barely tell his allies apart from his enemies. He no longer has any form of honor or higher thought and even the people of the city state (Darius included) thought it was a terrible thing to do to him. Also, did I mention warcrimes? I believe I did.

Demacia more or less speaks for itself, if your still unsure here is the article on it http://leagueoflegends.wikia.com/wiki/Demacia there has never been a rebellion or attempted coup, they believe in equal judgement for all and just because their laws are strict does not make them crazy.

You are right about one thing, being evil isn't determined by your color. However attempting a hostile takeover of every land you can see, turning your soldiers into undead abominations and using poison gas to kill not only the enemy, but your own soldiers as well is. What is the worst you can say about Demacia besides they are uptight?

BodyByDave1 votes

It's the evil label I have a problem with, because it's too easy to write them off as such.

What's good and what's evil is merely determined by values instilled upon you as an individual during your socialization/upbringing, largely determined by past victories in war time. Noxus may play off of some evil tropes of our generation, but you might not think the same way if you were born in a different time period. History is written by the victor.

Warcrimes? Really? You probably get bent every time CNN gets its hands on torture footage committed by us. War is war, trying to beautify it and do it cleanly is impossible - so I don't see the point in hanging on this.

Xulsigae2 votes

Hooboy I had a lot of things to write. Sorry about that sir or madam.

History is not solely determined by the victors. There have been many losers throughout history that survived to write about their enemies and there have been many on the victorious side to write about their foes. Few victors go on to completely eliminate those they defeated. Often times they will assimilate or be assimilated into the conquered (The Mongols are a good example). We know lot about civilizations that were destroyed from their own records and what they left behind and what the destroyers recorded as well (The Aztecs for example). It's easy to try and doubt history by saying 'It's only written by the victors' when it's far more nuanced than that.

I agree that evil is a label. I personally think no one in real life and few good fictional characters actually think what they do is evil. One could argue there are no evil people, just evil actions. But that doesn't excuse those actions.

Different time periods have different morals yes, but we can only look at things through the morals of today. We can say slave holders were not racist by the standards of their time, but that doesn't excuse their actions. Noxian actions like the chemical warfare and genocide of the minotaurs are still wrong regardless of what they thought or were taught. Moral relativism is a dangerous path I think.

There are commonalities of what is moral throughout cultures. Murder as 'unjustified killing,' theft as 'unjustified taking' and such. Even though what is justified can vary there is growing consensus on what is moral and what is not. Cannibalism is pretty much agreed on to be immoral now except in dire circumstances for example. Slavery is legal or accepted in a few places but is getting cracked down on. Human sacrifice is a no no. Beating children or spouses is becoming less acceptable.

Noxus and maybe Zaun and parts of Bilgewater seem to be the exceptions to RuneTerran morals (I'm excluding nonhuman sides like the Trolls, Void, and Shadow Isles for simplicity). I could be wrong but it seems no one else but Noxus and Zaun and maybe Bilgewater are okay with chemical warfare, killing your way up the social ladder, genocide and other 'atrocities.' Bilgewater might be okay with killing to advance personal goals (like father like son), but I don't think even Gangplank would kill every member of a ethnic group or species or use horrific chemicals against his enemies (unless you count grog soaked blade, man than can get annoying).

Noxus was pretty much meant to be the dark and Demacia the light by Riot. Looking at their art styles, champion motivations and quotes and their philosophies, it's hard to argue that Noxus is actually good or not as bad as Demacia. I see a lot of people claim that Noxus is better than Demacia because of the meritocratic nature of things and Demacian laws. While this can be true I don't think any of us would survive long there as I don't think any of us is prepared to kill (at least I hope not). What we see of Noxian meritocracy is rule by the strong and ruthless, not something we in the real world in general like to think as a good way to govern. The city is built in the shape of a skull too...not very subtle. To me those who see Noxus as better because of the meritocracy overestimate how well they'd do in Noxus.

Demacia has far fewer negative tropes associated with it. Off the top of my head I can only really think of the Lux being forced into the military, a remark by Caitlin on their strict laws and maybe a bit with Quinn being exceptional as a commoner rising into the ranks. I'm likely missing some, but overall Demacia comes out better in what it has done or hasn't done. A monarchy isn't necessarily a bad thing if the monarch is wise and just. A social ladder that can be climbed with great effort, is better than one in which the way to climb is to knife each other.

So pretty much Noxus need to be written more subtly I think to be an equal moral alternative to Demacia. Cut back on the genocide and bloodlust and necromancy (keep Sion though) and promotion-via-murder and maybe some urban planning to remove the skull. I'd like Demacia and Noxus to be two powerful city states with opposing but viable societies. One where laws are strict but just and one where laws are lax but the rewards greater. One with a sense of honor based on unwieldy codes of conduct, one with honor based on defeating your enemy without causing undo suffering.

Pretty much the same for Piltover and Zaun as well I suppose. Neither has to be 'evil' in their actions , but you can still make them morally equivalent rivals.

JusticePauldrons1 votes

You can debate labels all you want but the fact of the matter is Noxus is not a nice place to live, are they "Evil"? Not necessarily, but they certainly are out of their gourd. Their own moral views are so extremely twisted and skewed they don't even realize some of the shit they are doing is wrong half the time. There are some exceptions such as Riven opposing cowardly weapons and Darius opposing the reanimation of Sion, but these thing are still widely accepted in Noxus or at the very least forced to be accepted by the elite.

On the topic of their opposing views being attributed to different types of isolated cultures that isn't exactly the case here. There are number of things that create social norms in various cultures but often the more a group of people is exposed to an idea the more they come to a common agreement on the subject. Noxus isn't an isolationist state or anything, it isn't like hearing that chemical weapons are looked down upon is some radical new idea to them and the people need time to adjust to this foreign concept. They realize full well what they are doing and accept it anyway regardless.

There are many people or groups throughout history that did immoral, unjustifiable acts due to their own warped sense of morality, while they think they may have had good reasons for their actions we don't hesitate so slap the 'evil' label on them. There is a saying the the road to hell is paved with good intentions, and that seems like case no matter what. It isn't like most people wake up and think " I feel like being evil today!"

{quoted}

It is easy to do because it isn't far off. As I mentioned in response to the other post we have labeled people as such for far less. But here is a quick list off the top of my head for reasons it is easy to stick Noxus with the evil label and be done with it; Necromancy, use of chemical weapons, firing on their own men, slaughtering of towns and villages, regicide, and being totally okay with having to backstab your way to the top.

Also I have no idea why you keep bringing up the US like that is some sort of end all argument. This is between the moral alignment of two fictional towns, I don't think the US is better than anyone else and never said anything to so much as imply that and your blatantly rude assumptions of my character are nothing short of half shrouded insults for the sole point of trying to be offensive. There is no reason to hang yourself up arguing a point that was never made.

So again, lets go ahead and give the hypothetical situation I could choose one place to live in why the hell would I choose Noxus? Their brochure includes torture, rewarding service by being made into a corpsemonster, killing their own men, slaughtering villages and town elders and living in a town where literally anyone can kill you and no one would bat an eye.

The worst thing you can say about Demacia is they have strict laws...the horror.

BodyByDave1 votes

And the entire point of your "Too bad Demacia is nicer" comment was? Trolling the op? Gee that sure is a nice thing you wrote, but Demacia is better.

I was merely drawing similarities to the world we live in today and hoping you might realize that there's some good in that unfaltering dedication.

I apologize for my snide remarks or assumptions, but it seems your sole purpose in this thread was to belittle or draw away from the op.

Thanks X by the way for the nice morality write-up. Have a Teemo. Teemo

It was actually there to start a discussion, truth be told it did its goal. I didn't think it would develop into a thread debating whether or not Noxus should be considered "evil" and I honestly didn't think anyone would try to defend it albeit sarcastically.

I would like to thank everyone who gave me support on this. I realize that I haven't climbed a mountain whilst blindfolded or anything, but I appreciate everything that all of you have said. I'm even okay with the people who don't like it. Hell, I wrote this late at night when I was tired as balls, and I wake up to see that people actually like my writing. I know I'm not some instant classic writer that everybody loves, and I know my writing is not the greatest thing in the universe. But I care for the League so much, and I stand behind Riot in almost every decision they make. I mean, a Rioter commented on this, and said it was good. I don't know if that means anything to you, but the fact that a person WHO WORKS AT RIOT thinks this is good makes me happy beyond comprehension. So thank you to everyone who commented and liked this post I made.
