Something needs to be done about players who abuse the mute function

I just had a game where our fizz muted the entire team at about the 5 minute mark, because 1 player accused him of not watching the map (fact, he did not assist our jungler when the enemy shaco invaded. Twice.). Even if there was nothing the fizz could have done, he just needs to calmly state this, and move on. Instead, he announced that he would be muting us, and promptly left the chat. We ended up losing the game due to the obvious lack of coordination.

Now, obviously the mute function has its place. When someone is spamming chat or being toxic, by all means mute that player. However, when someone shows some salt over a play that you may/may not have been able to assist with, or gives you some justified (yet potentially unwanted) criticism, I find that muting that player only adds fuel to the fire. ESPECIALLY when you announced in chat that you are muting said player.

The point of the mute function is to stop the chat from making your experience in game worse. The way you described it is exactly how I recommend it be used. That is not abuse.

the player that "accused" the fizz did not do so in a toxic manner. He was definitely salty, but he didn't rage. He just smthn like "come on fizz watch the map and help next time". Fizz went off the handle at him, then promptly muted, after announcing. This is also an important thing that lliterally no one in this post has mentioned. HE ANNOUNCED THAT HE WAS MUTING ANOTHER PLAYER. That is literally the same offense as saying "reported" which riot has declared on numerous occasions as a bannable offense. It accomplishes nothing except inciting more toxicity. To use the mute function as a weapon instead of the defensive measure it was intended as IS ABUSE.

I think that's subjective. You probably would get banned if you did it every game, but I know a lot of people prefer to be told if they're being muted. It can be frustrating thinking you're creating a strategy with a player, only to find out later you're talking to a wall and you died for nothing.

No one prefers to be told they are being muted. Think about it: that is literally saying "hey, you are so much of an asshole that I am opting to severe communications with you, despite the obvious disadvantage it puts me at". There's no subjectivity here, that's the intended purpose of muting. To announce this in chat will only incite further toxicity.

I understand your feelings, but I've had people ON THIS FORUM tell me the opposite. It's subjective.

Nah, if someone's gonna mute me, I'd much rather they let me know.

The chat should be used to say things like bard flash, ammumu ult. Strategy based things.

Muting someone is the best thing someone can do, and I do it all the time, He says he muted you so you know he muted you and use the smart ping system instead.

ineresting, you mean strategy things like "please watch the map and help next time". because i shit you not that's what he muted for.

When that player "accused" him of anything he violated the summoners code. Fizz doesn't need to calmly state shit after someone was toxic to him. I'm glad you got /mute all'd.

MonkeyMadness1 votes

interesting. so if i tell someone "you just watched me die, please help" or smthn like that, I have violated the summoner's code? No, ofc its not.

However, when a player willingly causes the team to be at a disadvantage due to their own personal feelings of negativity, THAT is a violation of the summoner's code.

Actually yes, when they said "You just watched me die...". That part right there. If you were to say that in 20 games and got reported. You would be punished and Riot support would tell you that you're being negative and deserved it.

You are the kind of person that really shouldn't be allowed to play any game that requires human interraction. To say that a statement this passive is toxic is just so cancerous for the entire community. This is categorically NOT toxic. It is a statement of observation that does nothing to pass judgement on the character of another player. I would most certainly NOT be banned for saying this, even if I said it 10 times a game for the next 2 years, as there is simply no way a sane individual should be in any capacity upset by such a statement. And if this does upset you, then you are clearly not equipped for interpersonal interaction, and this game is clearly not for you.

No, sorry friend.

Riot agrees with me on this.

Post that as your chat log when you get banned see what the community thinks about your negative behavior.

You're lying. If you said stuff like that all the time you would be banned.

Check out the player behavior forum.

All this whining from you makes me question if you're ready for real life kiddo ;)

Good luck, you're gonna need it!

Nothing wrong with muting someone, and based off of how you speak here on the forums you're just bolstering the idea of pre muting in match.

MonkeyMadness1 votes

communication wins games. If you voluntarily severe all comms by pre-muting, you are no longer playing to win, and so why bother queueing for ranked?

that's not abuse, that's just a useless application

I Do the same thing once I see anyone being toxic towards anyone. Just unhealthy and i tell the person I am muting them before I do so. Later on I tend to unmute to see if their attitude changed if not then I mute again. It keeps me from tilting or flaming.

I don't think Fizz not muting you would have won you the game.

He ended up split pushing bot when we needed him for teamfights, and no one could tell him to group up. Sure, we pinged, but he didn't get the message until it was way too late. He spent most of the endgame dead as a result.
