So I played Sona again for the first time since her DJ Skin came out...
...mostly because I wanted to see that glorious booty jiggle its way on to the rift again.
Sorry, this is Gameplay & Balance, need to focus. Ahem.
So I know exactly what her deal is and why she's doomed. Much like Nasus, she cannot be buffed in any meaningful way because her Q is just too OP.
Now, I know what the boards hivemind is thinking "SONA? OP? BURN THE WITCH! BURN HIM AT THE STAKE!"
Hear me out. Just like with Nasus' Q, Sona's Q is simply too powerful to allow her to be buffed in any meaningful areas. Only difference is that Nasus' W and E are pretty powerful, and Sona's W and E are jokes.
I know the boards are waiting to break out the numbers to call me a noob and say she's the trashiest champion in the game, but I want to look at her Q numbers very, very carefully.
Magic Damage: 40 / 80 / 120 / 160 / 200 (+ 50% AP)
Bonus Magic Damage: 20 / 30 / 40 / 50 / 60 (+ 20% AP) (+ 10 / 20 / 40 per rank of Crescendo)
Yes, by itself, Sona's values are pretty bad. But last I checked Sona was played as a support, and not an AP mid solo. So, let's just figure that you copied my support rune page, and give Sona 10% CDR at the start of the game, and 10 AP from spellthief.
So Sona's Q by itself deals 45 magic damage to up to two champions. Pretty weak sauce. If you auto attack afterward, you deal 50 bonus physical damage and 22 bonus magic damage, for a total of 67 magic damage and 50 physical damage in a short time span. Let's just call it 100 mixed damage assuming resistances.
Here's the catch, hile Sona's skill floor is pretty low, her skill ceiling actually isn't as low as everyone thinks. Much like Malzahar, you have to keep track of her passive, and if you charge it before you get into lane, you'll have power chord at the ready.
So if we factor in a power chord strike, that's another 15 magic damage on top of it. But let's not forget that the power chord bonus for Hymn of Valor is that the damage is increased by 40%. That's another 6 magic damage. Yeah, the numbers sound really bad, but you have to realize what scenario Sona is in. She's going to have an ADC get the magic damage bonus too.
So let's just give her an ADC to lane with. Vayne's a good choice because her kit synergies well with Sona's. Vayne has a base damage of 53 (let's ignore possible attack damage runes/masteries.) Vayne also takes an ability at level one, and the most obvious one would be tumble. So Sona charges Hymn of Valor with Power Chord, Vayne can't resist Sona's fat ass so she gets all up in that snuggle zone to get closer to it, tumbles because she wants to get even closer, and then she realizes there's an enemy champion in sight. Sona attacks for 45 magic damage from the Q, another 22 from her auto attack, 50 physical damage from the auto attack, and an addiotnal 21 magic damage from the power chord. Vayne attacks afterwards for 53 damage from the auto attack, an additonal 15 from tumble's bonus, plus the 22 magic damage from Sona's Q.
The total damage at level 1?
45 + 22 + 22 + 21 magic damage.
50 + 53 + 15 physical damage.
110 magic damage.
118 physical damage.
That's TWO HUNDRED AND EIGHTEEN MIXED DAMAGE AT LEVEL ONE. To put this into perspective, that's almost half of Sona's base health.
You know why Sona's heal has a freaking 0.5% missing health ratio scale? You know why Sona's movespeed buff is only 10% and freaking degrades? You know why Sona's ultimate wasn't given regular mana scalings and her movespeed is still stuck at 325, despite her lack of hard crowd control outside of her ultimate, and the lack of any crowd control outside of her E empowered power chord? That's why.
In an effort to erase her "hidden power", Riot actually turned her into a level one cheeseball. Yeah, it turns out that empowering your team with on hit bonus magic damage while firing off two homing missiles that prioritize champions is pretty damn powerful.
And Riot hit literally everything in her kit besides her Q to make up for it. It's like if Riven got brought down to 350 base health, her AD was lowered to 40, her attack speed was lowered to 0.6, her shield's AD ratio was lowered to 40%, but her Q's damage was doubled.
The problem is that her Q is her only source of damage outside of her ultimate. Nerf that and she'll literally do no damage, and will go from launching sound waves that hit like semi trucks to mosquito bites.
Sona just isn't salvagable in her current state. She's easily the most doomed champion in League of Legends right now. She needs another rework.
