There's an easy way to fix this problem.

Stop watching LCS.

Stop watching professional streamers on Twitch.

Totally ignore the existence of eSports and turn it into a giant festering monetary sinkhole that Riot can't afford to put any effort into. Actively sabotage it by refusing to buy RP until it is gone. And then, maybe, Riot will balance the game around the people who play it.

I completely agree, but I seriously doubt you'd convince millions of other players to do the same. Personally I don't give 2 shits about the eSports scene, but apparently some people are really into it. No idea why...........I mean, why waste time watching someone else play a game when you can be playing it yourself?

It Hertz When IP5 votes

I already stopped buying RP. Even when I really wanted to. Only new skin I got was Project Leona from that disruption promo a few weeks ago, and that was all IP.

Is this question targeted at Esports or all sports in general?

League is an online free to play game, other sports need minor monetary investment (gear) and local people to play with. League has millions of players at the ready and only needs a computer which almost everyone has.

Not all sports needs other people to play with or even gear. For example, long jump and running.

Baron of Bread4 votes

If you want to do proper long jumping without a pit, go for it.

GaleWinUnleashed17 votes

I take that stance with ALL sports. I have absolutely no interest in attending or spectating a game. I do, however, still appreciate amazing plays, but I'm not going to sit and watch the full game just hoping for something cool to happen. I will enjoy watching the cool play, but I don't care about the comparatively boring things that happen before and after.

End result of this: I do not watch any professional sport or follow any competitive team, but I watch lots of Random LoL Moments =P

Some people watch it because they love the way the game is played at the upper levels, and how strategic it is. Also, certain little tricks can help you improve a lot in your gameplay.

EndGamer113 votes

The reason people watch sports is to see people "representing" them (their team of choice) perform feats of skill, strength, or strategy that the normal person cannot. I think there is a certain joy people find in that, although I do not feel the same.

If everyone did this. People would lose jobs in the esports industry. As well as its not gonna change anything really. People will still cry about this champ and that champ. Its not like their gonna be like "oh now that theres no more lcs we can finally create a perfect game out of league of legends, where every champion is equal" thats just not gonna happen so rather then complain about riot just play and have fun with it jeeze.

LichKing2342 votes

i mean all champs dont have to be equal but i would like most champs viable now what im about to say may rustle some jimmies but it has to be said look at dota2 most of their heroes are viable alot more than leagues champions and yeah dota 2 if my memory serves me has a roster = to league if not larger or smaller give or take but that still says something dota 2s heros have more viability than leagues where teams make comps on the flavor of the patch champions then just building a comp that works well with each other (now this changes with each elo) and now champion viability changes with elo as you but heres the thing Dota 2s heros most are viable regardless of what elo your in now that says something

now im not a dota 2 fan boy and im fully aware league and dota 2 are 2 different games but their premise is the same regardless take nexus / Ancient and you win and before i go on it would be nice if league atleast tried to make most of their champs viable and you would have more champion Diversity especially in higher elos

CeexSett5 votes

Most of Dota 2's heroes are viable because they play on a counterpick status. Every hero there has some other heroes that completely counter that first one in a way he is useless the entire game. That way, there are strong champions, but the heroes that counter them get super strong as well because they are the only way to stop them. And that is because Dota 2's heroes are completely broken.

I mean, people freak out with 55% win rate Yasuo but Dota has some heroes over constant 60% win rate.

LichKing2341 votes

True but i mean you still get to see a good number of dota heros and thats a thing absolute counters i would love to see stuff like that in league to me it just puts alot more power in your pick and it atleasts makes heros viable no matter what cause they counter anther hero witch again makes your picks more important

CeexSett2 votes

To me, absolute counters is pretty bad to the game. Imagine the first pick picking his better champion, the one he loves to play, and then a douchebag enemy picks its absolute counter and then the first picker cant do shit the whole game. But he also had no choice, because he was a first pick.

Tbh they're not even balancing completely around competitive. Else they'd buff the shit out of Aatrox Akali Blitzcrank Evelynn Galio Heimerdinger Illaoi Karthus Katarina Kayle Kennen MasterYi Mordekaiser Nasus Pantheon Shaco Singed Sion Swain Teemo Tryndamere Udyr Urgot Yorick Warwick MonkeyKing Zac Vi Ziggs and i probably forgot some others

So as to make those champions as good as others in the highest competition. But they don't do it. If the game was truly balanced around competitive man, we wouldn't be seeing the same freaking champions all the time.

They just buff the "muh play muh skillshot such skill wow" kind of champs because they believe it's more interesting to watch (and they also happen to be harder to master.. in general)

They don't want diversity. They want muh play. But that's going against them, since watching the same champions over and over again is the most uninteresting shit ever. Also it's fucked up because those champions are arguably simply stronger than others when mastered ; so there's no point in trying to master a weaker champion if you can try to master a toptier champion, you'll go further with the second one.

Elikain11 votes

You're forgetting that LCS is a big part why League is so big. Literally every patch to date has been for us, except for a handful of ones that strictly focus on pro scene that also happens to be on a yearly basis.

Stop acting like a jealous child. WW is up for a rework, Yi and Xin, WW and Shyvanna are too simple, effective and snowbally when they are good enough for LCS. What you need to do is get your head out of your ass and stop being a meta sheep. Try these champions yourself and see if they work or not, don't follow a shitty trend of "nobody plays them, then that means they're crap".

As for a "where's this champ's rework" standpoint, unless you want another Mordekaiser and Skarner, you'll sit your ass down and wait for a viable direction for them. Or they'll be turned into a horrible patch job that you'll inevitably still find a reason to complain about.

Mr Fidori3 votes

How this is something anyone can somehow agree with is beyond me.

GGXJ935 votes

There is a difference between a champion that can be competitively viable and ones that cant.

Udyr is an example of a champion with a terrible kit that did see competitive play because of a niche team comp ( clg for example) Those champions have extremely basic and not very good kits so they will never see competitive unless they are overtuned (like udyr was)

That and league has evolved so standard easy to play around champions wont cut it. Use a little logic. Unless you are meming then w/e

PiVoRx15 votes

Then whats the point of their existence? If you want to get high in league just skip "standard" champions and learn to play what can get high.

No Yellow Norco5 votes

Their point of existence is for new players. Easier to play WW, slap W, and R the enemy carry than it is to play Lee, land a Q that is good to go in on, go in on it, ward hop behind their carry, and ult them into your team.

Hinagiku332 votes

However, Riot has stated that no champ should cease to be viable just because you aren't in Bronze anymore.

Even the most basic champions are supposed to have enough of a skill ceiling that plat+ players still have a reason to pick them.

Unfortunately, Riot is terrible at implementing said philosophy and will need until at least 2020 to overhaul the most outdated kits...and only the worst cases unless they seriously ramp up their release speed on VGUs.

Aatrox Akali Evelynn Galio Kalista MasterYi Renekton Shaco Shyvana Singed Skarner Swain Teemo Udyr Urgot XinZhao

And that's just the most dire cases, most of whom Riot has already stated they plan to someday to full VGU-level reworks of. Here's hoping Riot picks up the pace so these champions can actually be viable without just jacking up their numbers to toxic levels.

No Yellow Norco2 votes

A lot of those champs have a perfectly fine (55-56%) win rate in plat+ for people that main them. Not too mention, the champs you listed aren't exactly the first that come to mind when talking about noob friendly champs that have a brain dead kit (which is probably why there is a huge difference in win rate% by games played on most of them).

GGXJ93 votes

Because league has a casual side to the game as well. These champions also were mostly made from back when the game wasnt very big and didnt even have a competitive aspect.

Jaygo418 votes

You're asking the right questions. What IS the point of these champions?

Unfortunately they were created in an era where League was a lot simpler. There were no Yasuos, Ekkos, Azirs (although not rn), and other things. But while some of these champs are complete cancer (IMHO), they are ALSO more interesting to watch than Xin Zhao. These champs can make more choices, play different styles, and are more open to player expression and skill than the others.

Additionally and unfortunately a lot of people would just much rather watch the overloaded champs like the Yasuos and Ekkos than other champs.

EROTIC RAID BOSS5 votes

high skill champs are definitely more fun to watch.

but that's not why pros don't play garen- after all they play plenty of ashe, jhin, sivir, malzahar, vlad etc. right now. but 'run up to you and melee you' champs like garen or master yi aren't effective in organized play, even when they're effective at every other elo range

Saianna2 votes

These champs can make more choices, play different styles, and are more open to player expression and skill than the others.

Hmm I'd argue with this one.. Simple champs like Yi/Xin/Udyr were very elastic when it came to builds. AP, AD, semi-bruiser-ish tanks. Lots of options.

While overloaded champs such as Lee? You have to follow 1 build and on top of that you have to play it exactly the same every time...

EROTIC RAID BOSS3 votes

Some champs just don't bring what pros need even if they're perfectly fine in normal games. Such as master yi- in general with junglers pros are looking for things like being able to jump walls for more gank paths, and can unload their damage or cc very quickly I think? So even when yi volibear and syndra were OP as hell earlier this year, pros weren't really interested in them.

Garen's not likely to ever be a competitive champ either without a full rework, but that doesn't mean he's unplayable in solo queue.

KoggyStyle1 votes

Gnar can wall jump.... albeit its cringe worthy how low i get solo jungling in customs... but its fun... also they havent givin him hunters machete in reccomended items... when he takes smite... rito plz.

EROTIC RAID BOSS4 votes

he's a terrible jungler lol. I meant he's good top lane

CeexSett12 votes

You mean how Trick got Diamond with Udyr and Volibear, Annie Bot got Challenger with Annie, Cowsep is Diamond in NA and Korea with Master Yi and Nasus...

It's not like the champions are useless, but in competitive where the pros know every single champion from front to back, a champion that has as his only strength running at the enemies is not going to make it. Champions need fallback patterns are meaningfull choices in their kit.

Rozzeta11 votes

It's just the Lee Sin worlds buff. It has happened every year.

Jamochawoke10 votes

Yeah I didn't get it either. Lee is one of the strongest junglers in the game right now.

shrugs

EROTIC RAID BOSS3 votes

lee sin kinda blows right now, I don't think these buffs will do anything to get him played at worlds tbh

Bladerunner77773 votes

Keep in mind the boards still think Zed is OP right now

DunkinNoobs10 votes

Making any of those champions viable at the pro level would make then pick or ban at any elo below Masters. Do you really want pick or ban Udyr again?

hhaavviikk4 votes

nice change from seeing lee sin in every game for 3-4 seasons because he was the best jungler in existence

CeexSett7 votes

I actually prefer watching Lee Sin than Udyr running at people.

Anidan3 votes

As much as I hate to say it, some champions are just plain boring to watch, and Udyr is most of them.

DeathbyDOUGH9 votes

The glaring issue with this is that xin zhao was buffed a while back because of a crapshoot attempt at making him viable in diamond+, let alone LCS.

remember that chaos?

Did they update the patch notes? The buff on the PBE for him was not in the notes when I read it.

That's just Meta. Kled Aurelion Sol (beleive his flight counts as one) Pantheon

Oh yeah, and then anyone who builds Protobelt.

Unfortunately, the champion most aligned to take advantage of the meta has been dumpstered and can't compete against the rest of the meta, despide actively countering a good portion of it.

GenghisEmo2 votes

We don't need Udyr in pro play. That was a very, very bad sign. Udyr was just so busted and his pro play game time, even if small, proved it.

Shyv needs to be fixed, the ult is busted. That fix should make her viable.

Xin, Yi, WW are teetering on a slippery slope. We don't need an equivalent of Sated Dev w/ Guinsoo's off tank like vibe from them, that's not balanced, that's being lazy. We need to rework them, or create non op items for them (the item thing is obviously already impossible which leaves us with the former option). And as they are, they're still a menace in low elo since people forget how to counter or cannot peel for carries.

KvotheAdem5 votes

Udyr was busted in soloque

Completely balanced in competetive, he wasn't really OP at all.

Current state of Udyr is in the shitter though. He's literally one of the worst junglers you can pick up.

They aren't seen for a very specific reason, just like Heimerdinger inst. The nature of their kits/play styles. Easy counter play mechanics, solo carry play style, succeptible to coordination/cc. All things that professional players won't take into a match. Only reason shyv was picked top back in season 4/5 was because she was overpowered and items were great for her
