Tanks should not get to out poke anyone

Sion Malphite Ornn DrMundo are the main champs this refers too. I am a firm believer that champions who are meant to get tanky should not get ranged abilities that have the potential to pole people out of lane. IMO if tanks are spamming their ranged abilities on you they should run oom before they get close to kill you. Tanks should only have damage when you are close to them and should be forced to stay on top of you in order to maintain large damage output. Here is the reasoning behind this. When tanks main damaging ability is something with range and does all its damage at once then you are encouraging opponents to just not interact with the tanks. As it is damage is more expensive than defense so if you go for damage against a tank he will just use his ranged ability whenever you get into range to hurt you and disengage and then wait for it to come back up. So your best course of action is to just never try and trade with the tank which is just super boring and not fun. I have no issue with tanks having ranged CC abilities that help them get in range to do damage.

It really, really depends on the tank.

Mundo scales extremely well as far as tankiness goes, but his CC and control is very limited. He has trouble controlling fights, even if he becomes virtually unkillable. That being said, his early game is pretty weak. You basically have to land cleavers. (Which are pretty easy to dodge.)

I think what your really upset about is certain tanks having a very powerful early game lane dominance, and then scaling super well into late game.

I'll let you in on a little secret: Right now in league, the only champions who are viable in high level play, are the ones who are good at all points during the game.

This used to not be the case, but scaling is pretty much fucked. ADCS are very potent out of the gate, if you can't keep up - then your basically done. I don't think its a 'tank-specific' issue.

Sion is famous for his early game. The problem is that if the enemy laner survives the hellish early game, he falls off a lot, with his damage dealing vey little once armor kicks in and their are tanks that can offer better forms of CC. For that early game, anyone that can sustain themselves or struggle dying can survive him. Assuming you don't let him poke you all the time.

Mundo's poke is okay, but not OP. Minions can block it and Mundo himself is very susceptible to Grevious Wound items, especially early on when he doesn't have his Spirit Visage. Aggressive damage dealers (assuming they aren't dumb) can bully him well, but you have to keep in mind that he's always healing. As far as tanks go, he doesn't outscale many since his only useful teamfighting contribution is a single target slow, and not dying.

Ornn is a strong anti-tank tank since his damage is max HP based. Even if you do eat the breath attack itself, avoiding the auto attack after getting brittle is quite easy. And there are other lane bullies that can out trade him. Ornn has a poke, but someone who can do damage consistently over a long drawn out battle can out damage him due to his high cooldowns. That's how I won a game against an Ornn as Tahm Kench last night. :D

With the new runes, Malphite is actually quite strong in the early game. But with the recent changes to manaflow, it will actually take longer for him to get the mana regeneration from it, which is one of the reason he got real strong. But while he has poke, he's actually weak to poke himself, and for the same reason as Garen. He needs to not get hit by anything for his shield to regen, and that what gives him his health sustain. Someone who can harass him consistently can keep that shield from growing back, letting him take actual additional damage.

mal is gonna have a hard time outpoking anyone, keeping a decent bit of mana, and being worthwhile tanky...
