I was hoping Ornn's item upgrades would buff their passives, not their stats.

Ok sure but why··6 votes·2,328 views

It's not even a matter of thinking when choosing what item to upgrade, anymore. Do you want an extra 150 health and 20 AD? Get the item 3380 Do you want an extra 30 AD instead? Get item 3371 Want a free 55 AD? Why not rush the item 3374? Etc. Etc.

Because if my eyes don't deceive me, each one of Ornn's items has a passive, and those were left untouched. Just think about what could have been done instead.

item 3371 Could have increased the critical damage to 75% instead of 50%. item 3380 Could have shred armour by 36% instead of 24%. item 3384 Could have dealt 250% base AD with spellblade, or maybe factored in a small amount of bonus AD as well. item 3383 Could have shielded for more. item 3374 Could have increased AP by 45-50% instead of 35%. item 3382 Could have increased heal/shield power by 15% and increased the healing done by the active. item 3379 Could have increased magic damage by 20%. item 3373 Could have dealt increased AOE damage, potentially based on %max health like Amumu's does.

It would have been so easy to do, but Riot just turned it into a gimmick. A cash-grab. Something no one actually has to think about when deciding which one of these items they actually want to buy.

Too prone to being imbalanced and it locks too many powerful effects behind having one certain champion on your team. It's a quite daring move already to lock items with improved primary stats behind having Ornn on your team. Imagine Hecarim with 250% spellblade Triforce, Renekton with a Black Cleaver with a 50% more powerful passive or Soraka with your improved Redemption. Or Veigar with your deathcap upgrade.

Ok sure but why1 votes

Oh yes, giving Veigar more scaling is bad, but giving him an easy 55 AP for the early game is just fine!

Early game?

Think an ornn upgraded rabadons costs 4500g

Thats not early game an early game item.

Ok sure but why1 votes

Yeah, but a free 55 AP for 1000 is chump-change if Veigar gave enough of a damn.

Narsicus2 votes

Blasting Wand is already 850g for 40 ap, is 1000g for 55 ap really such a huge improvement?

Honestly a lot of Orn's upgrades seem, at best, just ok and cost efficient for the money you put in. And since those come with no additional effects (like most items do) they tend to be unimpressive upgrades considering you could just get some other item that actually builds into something.

Where Orn's passive will shine is in late game, where his team's full build is objectively stronger than the enemy teams, since his team can invest more money into their stats than normally allowed.

i was hoping infinity edge would gain 20% crit chance instead of another 30 ad.

looks like im never going to be able to build crit garen on a regular basis again : /

seems like my last chance is hoping that riot is adding a "20% crit chance unlocked after 10 minutes" rune.

Ah man, I miss when the Trinity Force had crit. I rushed that item on Garen, Talon and Vayne every single game until they decided to make it a bruiser-only item.

ghostblade + i.e. was the shit on garen. open a fight with q + spin, activate ghostblade for attack speed and massive duelling power while your abilities are on cooldown, and by the time the active ran out, q + spin would be ready again.

Or increase the AoE range of sunfire.

I actually agree with you on that. I think it would have been more interesting.

I would, however, be kind of surprised if Riot didn't playtest it already and find it to be unhealthy. Some synergy with other champs is good. Too much of a good thing, though, is a bad thing. Could be that kind of a case.

Ok sure but why1 votes

Two months ago, I made a post talking about how cool it would be if you could spend 1000 gold upgrading any item in the game to boost its passive. I guess Riot went to make Ornn just to show me personally how little they like me.

ModKnightsKemplar2 votes

Haha

Unlikely. It's a neat idea, but I can see potential for it to be crazy OP at the same time.

Ok sure but why1 votes

But every item is designed to make champions more OP! I've noticed throughout the years, Riot has slowly been nerfing every single item in the game to make items less op, whilst buffing the base damages on most champions to compensate. While its goal was to dampen the harsh effects of snowballing, it's the main reason why tankier builds almost always dominate over full damage builds. If they allowed all the items to be OP like before, and found a different way to lessen snowballing, such as reworking the gold income, having OP items again would be more fun, fair, and justified.

From my perspective, one major concern was that it would've been a balancing nightmare. Plus, buffing the passive made the Ornn comp just ridiculous anytime we would simulate late game teamfights in our playtests.

Fun fact, Molten Edge with increased crit %. on Caitlyn/Jhin for example.... brutal.

ModKnightsKemplar1 votes

That's kind of what I figured. Nice of you to drop in and confirm, though! :D

I also imagine that increased healing/shielding on redemption and locket would be... unpopular, to say the least.

Novalas4 votes

Surprisingly, those two were some of the worst in testing. Except for when I had to play against it because I prefer to play assassin champions.

Ahristocats4 votes

what about adding other effects?

like adcs like to kite, give IE user +20% bonus ms for 1 sec on crit with a fixed cooldown

just a random idea, could have been different for other items too

Ok sure but why1 votes

But brutality through meticulous itemisation is brutality well-earned! If both teams were allowed to be given these options all the time, it would add to the customisation and depth the shop has to offer.

That, and I'm one of the few lucky people who actually took the time and resources to unlock a 37% bonus critical damage rune page, and I really can admit that bonus critical damage is absolutely phenomenal on crit champs like Cait. Less on Jhin, though, since he scales massively with AD, making the trade-off redundant.

Off-topic, will there be bonus critical damage masteries in the new mastery system? The suspense is absolutely killing me.

Primaquarius1 votes

Actually Cleaver would become more useful for some champs with the boost

Think it typically comes down to any item with a unique passive. The reason why unique passive had become a feature in the game, was due to how easily abusive such items were. Hell, near the start of my time with League, the very first thing I was introduced to after getting into the game by another player was stack 5 sunfire capes on Garen and just run around.

It's possible they're just hard set on making sure even Ornn doesn't risk making the items game breaking, to add importance as to why the passives are set to those stats statically.

Ok sure but why1 votes

Honestly, I made a post a long time ago, saying all items should deserve to have a 1000 gold upgrade to them. I literally did, and people said Riot would never do that! Man, these boards are cancerous and toxic. But anyways, it would be more fair and balanced if every legendary item had this option.

I'm sure you're aware the difference between a difference of opinion and toxicity, but the lack of distinction bugs me with this post. Don't take this personally though, think it's due to my OCD.

Anybutt, it is what it is. People should keep in mind that there's almost always something drastic with an item or champion upon its change or release until further testing can commence with the live server. It is what it is, because it has to be. It's how results are made. Not for or against the idea, but just wanted to make that point at least.

Sorry if my wording is weird. Haven't slept in awhile.

Ok sure but why1 votes

Yeah, I got what you meant. But the toxicity lies in the fact that every single thing you say will be denounced as "OP," but when Riot does it anyways, only them will people support the exact same concept, even if it failed.

RookPusher1 votes

God, I can't imagine playing this champ and the endless bitching about how we lost the game because you didn't upgrade the 2/8/3 Yasuo's item 3031

Ok sure but why1 votes

Yasuo upgrades his own items from the shop-----

Escheton1 votes

Buffing the passives would be OP. Now its just a little extra oomph come lategame or more efficient building midgame.

Death cap and 90 total MR and 550 hp on abysall mask are freaking amazing there is so few sources of decent MR and this compensates well for blocking most mages (except like cass and ziggs/lissandra). tanks, hybrids, and supports damage (except lulu) damage , was desperately needed and it finally makes it a strong and decent item.

the boosted support items are also highly desirable since they have such weak stats and you tend to get very gold bloated with redemption and locket, VERY gold bloated. Deathfire cap enhancement of more AP is also nice since you will always be building that, champions like veigar and syndra especially appreciate it so it is VERY strong (remember +55 ap is More than say an extra 5% total ap increase(except technically on veigar) and is also amped by its own passive making it closer to 75 ap). IE is also solid since its a must buy for many champions that owuld buy it so more ad is a god send and very strong.; the others are trash though you are right, and extra 50% sheen amp would have been prefered.

Shuyin1781 votes

Fun Fact : Deathcap gives more AP than it says it does because of its passive giving even more AP on top of it.

Seriously though, Ornn only buffs the physical parts of items, not the magical. If you notice, IE doesn't give extra crit and Trinity Force doesn't give extra CDR. Sure Deathcap gives more AP but that could just be what the cap's made out of. But yeah, he can't buff their abilities because that isn't his specialty. It honestly makes sense from a champion perspective.
