So how do I punish Lux?

GlockHammer··9 votes·2,029 views

What do I pick? How do I play? Aside from oneshotting her as rengar I don't see any other strategy working, as every atempt at her is telegraphed and her "skillshot" combo bordering on impossible to evade. Some tips please, as currently I just want to cut myself everytime I see her.

Kassadin. Fair amount of mobility, reduces magic damage, magic shield.

If you are against a lux, the best way is to pick a champ that doesnt need to attack lux by channeling, or needs to attack on her same axis. Velkoz is real good candidate which you can flatly outdamage, out poke, out utility.

In a teamfight aspect, the best way of killing off long range mages like xerath or lux is to flank them from the side unnoticed.

But I don't play mid yet every time every game every mid on my team and lux almost never on my team and almost always on the opposing team, my mid always managed to feed them. I'm shit mid player, I prefer jungle, adc and top, even support is preferabe to mid for me.

What can I do under these circumstances?

If you are a jungler, the best thing against poke mages is to run them down. Lux's skills are quite narrow and is hard to aim at backline squishies if you are bodyblocking shots and on top of her face. If you are support, frostqueen and roaming mid is a good way. A nice bard ult always works.

SleepyLionCub4 votes

Talon, blink into ult = she is already dead.

Leblanc = ultimate harass lane.

Fizz = troll pole her q, and instakill

Ahri = out sustain her with your heal and mobility.

Diana = instakill when u press r on her.

Xerath = Laugh bc ur basically the same champion but better at sustained fights

Morde = never take 1 damage the entire laning phase

Zed = poke her down then ult, but dont dive.

Yasuo = block all her moves in every teamfight ever.

GlockHammer2 votes

In all of my recent games, the only champ out of these that seemed to have a remote chance against Lux was Talon and even he needed the gank to get the upper hand.

Morde into lux? Are you for fucking real? Picking morde into Lux is like lubing your ass for whoever is playing Lux. As an ex morde main, I can tell u he's shit vs lux, but then again, he's shit against everything.

Diana doesn't get an edge on lux until lvl 6, the question is, does Diana have the super skill to not get pushed out of lane before then?

Ahri - Lux is a skillmatch at best and I definately wouldn't put it in Ahri's favour.

This is the problem with Lux, she has no direct counters, people freely pick her even at first pick because even assassins, that are supposed to be her counter, struggle against her. Her playstyle is the boring noninteractive dodge for days and hope you don't lose out on to much farm so you can catch her out when she roames, fail to do that and you might as well just lube your behind. How fun.

Fizz - Lux, all of luxes abilites outrange Fizz combined gapclosers by far, and also, Fizz intent to jump lux is telegraphed. So she will know it's coming. Only bad luxes lose to fizz imo. She has the shield to shave of quite a bit of his burst, also, since she is safe as fuck, the only place fizz will even be allowed to dive her is under her tower, cause she never walks past the mid point of mid lane during laning phase.

The only strategy I can see straight up working is murdering her with a fed Rengar. But then again, all lux has to do is group and even that strategy is worthless.

so what ur saying is u lost to a lux who was obviously way better than you with each of these champions.

I don't play any of these, champs, this is just a description of how I've observed these matchup generally go. I'm not claiming I am 100% correct about anything, aside from Lux being oppressive as fucking hell and borderline impossible to do anything about. She's reminiscent of pre-nerf azir, at some point he'd just walk all over you no matter what you do.

She really isnt though.

She isnt any more oppressive than the champions in her class.

Lux ,Orianna ,Xerath Velkoz , Ziggs are all fairly oppressive because thats their role. Long ranged harass and using distance as a safety mechanic is what they do best. They all get countered by eachother, blink assassins, and high mobility/high cc junglers. Lux really isnt that bad, her snare isnt some unstoppable force that is impossible to comprehend. Blink through it, flank her, bait for her to use it.

Her E also has a 130 mana cost attached to it, so yea, it better be strong. I feel like lowering its speed but also its mana cost would make laning against her even less enjoyable, as she would just spam it without caring for mana. "but she does that already lul". Play lux, and try using ur E a lot. You'll run out of mana in like 5 casts if u dont wait.

Thats kinda true for like every champion in the game...NEXT?

WalkingInACircle7 votes

No, it is highly dodgeable. It is undodgeable when fired at half its range against a target with no boots... which is the usual situation in a lane. Particularly because Lux in lane always wants to follow it up with an auto, so she may as well get close first to improve accuracy while removing your chance to avoid the auto. If Lux is using it at max range in lane, it is both dodgeable and she will run out mana before she drains your pots anyways. It is only mana efficient if she is getting in the auto (and thus passive proc and thus thunderlords). If she is within auto range, then you can counter trade.

Vistha Kai1 votes

If Lux casts her E on top of you, even at max range, it cannot be dodged without the use of mobility spells.

Even if she doesn't land AA, she still zones the enemy for 6 seconds.

You can evade, you know it in your head, but the way the animation works is messing up with your brain. For some reason, Lux's animation attacks are kind of like a stare fest. You know it is coming but you can't just click that mouse to evade it. Maybe something psychological?

Lux players are some of the most abusive fuckers out there, if you are melee, forget that she will use her skills until you are either trying to jump her or running away, the only skill she will use in lane unless going for the kill is her E, for the poke, thunderlords proc and harass. If you try to jump her out comes the shield and the root, if you try to run out comes the root, inbetween then Lux wins by just E+TL proc, Easy as shit to do and even more rewardig. This bitch needs a fatass nerf to at least one of her aspects, she can't be have safety, utlity and retarded damage all while having among the highest range in league it just doesn't make sense.

There are a decent amount of Lux Players that get closer or they go out of their way to try and Q you (if you have two waves of minions in front), this is how you know they may not be that great, and you go in, and punish the fuck out of their poor choices or decisions. You use ur cc if you are playing as Velkoz Xerath or as Syndra you throw a "newb" Q, or a "Get the CS Q" and then hit E. Then proceed to spam all others abilities.

As Velkoz hit W twice, and by this point wave could be cleared and then Q. Then Ult, if needed. You win.

As Xerath you stun if she is wide open or you aim ur W to slow and possibly help clear wave, then E. Then Q. And ult if needed.

As Syndra, which i explained. Place a Q as if you are cs-ing. Then E. The W a minion or Ball. Then Q and by this point 5 "Stacks" (6 if you faked the cs twice).

Take Tp on all of these in mid. They deal enough damage already, so try to out cs.

As Ahri you need to Last Hit with Q if she pokes too much, but make sure you use it only for last hits. Or if cs-ing well w/o abilities, you save it to poke her when she walks in between her melee and caster minions. Then Q to damage the whole wave and Lux. This way she cant move too well. If positioning too well, you farm the fudge out of the wave. If she waste her Q, punish her, and if she steps out of bounds, instead of walking directly towards her, try to make it look you're walking to her, then dodge the obvius Q, E her, and go ham. If she waste her Q, go all in if you got some or all of the following: vision, ignite and/or ult, and if she has no flash; all in her.

As Viktor it should also be pretty simple. Your E pokes freaking great, so upgrade first. Your Q deals dmg, and is point and click, and the laser is aa, so right click it. Place W if she is trapped in between minions, or in tight area, or to cut escape. Force the flash, then usee this same technique to punish poor positioning or guide her into a bad spot. When she tries to ult, w/o Qing you, try to dodge and then place a W under her, then go ham. You excel in between far and close, so if she gets close, make sure to punish.

Brand Brand. If she makes it obvious she ill Q or E, then W her. And if she is out of position, Q her. Rise Wash repeat as you cs pretty well. Then all in if she does it again after spending her potions and back at half health. Brand uses a descent amount of mana, so save W for when you punish her bad positioning.

As Orianna you pretty much try to play in between max range and close. You excel here as Orianna. Farm away with aa's, ty passive, and get aa's if she out of positions and after she uses abilities. And then as she backing off, Q+W for some burst. You will deal nowhere as much damage and will need to repeat over and over again and play pretty smart as Orianna, but patience can be rewarded greatly. Once you hit 6, should be pretty easy. Wait for her to think she has you, and then Q, R, wait a Q, then W as you walk towards Lux (only if you know she used up abilities, or if you are relatively safe and need to finish the job since her E can help save her), or Q, W, R if low enough as you walk to safety if you are about to be ganked.

As Talon, Let her Waste Q, then Go in and Kill. Super easy to get fed as Talon in Low Elo against a Lux. Or against a Lux like me, smart (not high elo, just smart), you will be neutralized a bit and may need to roam (but you can still win lane, worst case scenario you end even in lane, nothing worse unless you are bad as Talon).

And the infamous Malzahar that ult is so rewarding. If they step out off line, use it.

As Heimerdinger , you are countered. But Max W first, but get a few into Q, to aid in farming. Place them a bit far from melee minions to make Lux come to you a bit more if she wishes to kill them. E her or W her. Play it safe, and any mistake, go in for the taking. If you stun, ult, then W. Then close up Q a few times and maybe exhaust for max turret dmg while aa'ing. Works well against Ziggs and Vel too to some extent XD.

Ok, let's split this discussion, what are the counterplays to lux and what are the counterpicks?

Amelie1 votes

Some reasonable counterpicks are Yasuo (#1 imo), Zed, Kassadin, and Talon - among other assassins. She may (or may not) be hard to kill outright, but she will be playing defensive and often won't get fed without roams or ganks. If you want to be safe yourself, my personal pick is Morgana (since I don't play assassins).

Copy-pasta of a post I made some months ago when people were complaining about Lux:

You can predict when she wants to E. If she's using it to push/farm the wave, she'll wait for you to come up to farm and cast it at the backline of minions (to hit you at the same time). You can mostly avoid it if you farm from the side rather than center of the lane. This forces her to choose to use E for harass or waveclear, and the mana cost will hurt her.

If she uses Q to farm, or misses it completely, she has basically no retaliation if you just walk up to trade with her. You have to abuse the long cooldowns and high mana costs of her spells.

Early boots will help you dodge, starting Flask+pots makes Lux rage because you will stay high health after she used all her mana to poke you.

If you let Lux push you to turret, ganks become a lot easier. Ask your friendly neighborhood jungler for a gank.

PrometheS1 votes

I found Zilean to work pretty well but idk if he's an actual counter or I just played better. Her combo is very telegraphed since she has to land Q first. This lets you save yourself or an ally reliably. You also push better than her.

Niaphim1 votes

I've restarted maining (abusing) her in the preseason. My biggest no-no's: average or above Yasuo, Fizz, Zed or Kassadin, good Ekko. Also a very good Ahri is a nightmare, but it requires a really good skill: Q to dodqe my E, then engage with R+E and dodge my Q with one of the other charges.

Generally, i think her E was overbuffed, it's too powerful and forgiving, even considering its mana costs. Other than that she is not really op. Maybe a love tap on her ult somewhere, but nothing more.

Quantum Lotus1 votes

rush boots so you can dodge her q. When or if she ever wastes her q at all and misses it THAT is when you engage or try to poke her ass. Just make sure the enemy jungler isn't around and the minion waves aren't too large or you will take more damage from the minions.

Take advantage of the cooldown timers. She needs her q, try to engage after she uses it. Try to bait it out once you get boot/tier 2 boots.

Chuck Charles1 votes

As a filthy lux main I can say mobility is the best counter to Lux. With the exception of Leblanc, almost all mobile assassins can fuck over lux hard.

In lane phase her main weaknesses are low dmg without passive and very long cool downs. e is 10 seconds, Q is 15 seconds at rank 1.

Zed can outplay Lux as long as you don't just blindly use your W to harass and rather poke her with Qs and force her to trade back and use W to DODGE her abilities. If she misses an ability it is massive as that is 10-15 seconds she cannot trade back.

This applies to fizz only your dodge also closes the gap and gets you on top of lux. Nightmare matchup for lux if fizz is good.

Ekko can use E to dodge abilities and then blink to lux after.

Kassadin works the same way with his Ult only more reliably. Pre 6 it is bad for kassadin though.

Leblanc can also dominate Lux but because her mobilty is also her main source damage and a dash(not blink) it makes the matchup skill based. A god lux will read cheesy telegraphed Leblanc combos for free snare into full combo. Leblanc pretty much has to max W first so you don't want to rely on this to dodge.

Ahri, super slippery with move speed buff from Q and at level 6, if Lux uses her snare offensively and misses you can Ult towards her closing the gap and blow her up. Assuming you land the charm.

Also stand on the side of Minion waves so lux can't hit you and the wave. If she is going to hit you, shove the wave in and avoid letting her proc passive while doing so. If shove her in and she is using long cool down abilities to farm she will have A ridiculously hard time farming under tower.

Mana costs are massive for Lux as are her cool downs. Abuse that and her Lack of mobility. Don't blindly run at her but you can fuck her over with mobility/wave clear.

Annoxis1 votes

Buying mercury against her can help. Boots T2 in general help too.

Macilento1 votes

Dunno if this can help you but everytime i am vs LUx i go Velkoz

I always won the lane with Vel'Koz vs her even with 40 cs leads. What i do is basically wait untill she E to clear a wave. In that brief moment she will be the nearest to you since she is stuck in the animation to cast the E and you can slow her down with your Q.

After that land your life didintegration combo of E+ W (2proc with thunderlor) + R. Bye bye lux

Niaphim1 votes

I feel like it applies only to bad or mediocre luxes. After playing about 100-150 games on her in preseason (also some experience in dark bronze season 3 times) I've learned to mix my movement with casts, so I get a sort of animation cancelling, and as a result I throw my E while moving sideways or backwards. Works only with E though.

joliesse1 votes

I main Lux, and the champions I have the most trouble laning against are Yasuo, Zed, Katarina, LeBlanc, Talon, and Fizz. Ekkos and Ezreals who know what they're doing also give me a hard time. But in general, the hardest ones to play against are the ones with:

  1. no mana, so they only have to worry about their hp bar
  2. dashes, so Lux has a hard time landing her initial Q
  3. blinks/invisibility/sudden untargetables, so Lux has to wait for the exact time to pull off her combo.
  4. shields, so Lux can't land her full combo

tl;dr choose a champion that can either interrupt/prevent her combo or one that can one shot her before she even starts. Hope this helped a bit!

Weathered1 votes

Elise's human and spider E can counter her combo very hard and stun her in the process when timed right.

Lauchmelder1 votes

Always remember. Lux has counters. However, those counters are rendered useless once she starts laughing. (make it stop please)

Profirix1 votes

Lux is very susceptible to ganks and has a tendency to push a lane with her E. Wait for her to push the lane and have your jungler gank for you. At the very least you will get her flash, at the very best it could result in one or two kills.

Smitemuffin1 votes

Lux is ridiculously easy to shove in and dive because her only waveclear spells are expensive to cast and still require auto attacks. Use Malzahar and you're guaranteed to win
