Volibear's roar can fear Yorick's Ult when a player isn't taking control of it but he can't smite it

I just finished a game where I was volibear top vs yorick and my roar was able to fear his ult (without him dying and having control over it) but I wasn't able to smite it.

His roar is only suppose to fear minions/monsters so if his ult can be feared by it then it stands to reason he counts as a minion/monster so why can't he be smited? Was this intentional or a bug?

It's the same for other clones, so it's probably intended.

It's still a clarity issue. Something should be added to Volibear's passive that makes it clear that pets can also be feared? (Which I assume is what Yorick's ult is classified as in the game code)
