I'm kind of surprised skillshot mids aren't more popular

Personally, I find champions like Xerath, Ziggs, Vel' Koz etc. super fun but they never seem very popular. Why would champions like Malzahar or Annie be more popular. They seem so restricted to me. I have to be so close to even do anything. It feels so predictable. Unlike the poke mids where you flash away or save it if you can, Annie and Malz basically need to flash to even do anything. To be fair, some like Ekko or Zed seem pretty fun so I understand the appeal more.

Those champions use to rule supreme in Season 4. While those playing poke mages enjoying playing Dodgeball, everyone else hated it because they never got the ball. Nerfs ensued, the meta changed, and most players were happy to forget about them.

I personally agree with you, playing tons of Xerath in Ranked. He suffers from less skill expression than Ziggs and Vel'koz though, with my great "outplay" moments being charge Q, Flash, release Q and good ult usage. His ult range is very nice for being able to participate in fights on the other side of the map though.

Malz isn't that popular anymore. He had a spike in popularity during the year after his rework when Rito couldn't figure out how to balance him, but now he's back to around the same effectiveness and popularity as pre-rework.
