I don't get why mages have so many health items?

item 3027 item 3152 item 3116 item 3030 item 3151 and technically item 3001 because the of the aura.

I know immobile mages need some defense, but adding health to so many ap items just seems unimaginative and boring. Plus in most games, health is usually a tank stat, not a mage stat. If you look at ad items, there is a huge selection of defence items that don't use health.

item 3812 item 3072 item 3814 item 3156 item 3139 item 3046 item 3026

all of this items don't have health, yet add defense in creative ways. The only items mages have similar are

item 3157 item 3102 item 3003

Overall, ap items just seem to lack diversity and imagination.

It's really only 4 since item 3152 and item 3030 can't really be bought together. And saying "why does AP have so many HP items?" is really odd and misleading cause AD have way more. On top of being able to work tank items into their build much much easier. item 3814 item 3022 item 3053 item 3071 item 3078 item 3748

item 3071 item 3742 (just because you consider mask a mage item) item 3022 and any life steal item that fucking exists

Plus most of those items are really niche to the point that only one of those, or none are built.

If you build ROA, you might as well build every health AP item and hope you get moderately tanky Malzahar

Those AD/health items are decent and still add a nice variety to the AD item pool. AP is lacking that.

To be fair, AD stacking health would be unhealthy because of life steal providing consistent DPS for sustain. Spell vamp is gone, so we need health because we don't have consistent DPS to leech from because of cooldowns, so I guess it's the next best thing, I guess.

I think it is for ap mages who already has decent base and ratio. Those mages can build health no problem because they already have the damage. Swain has to build health for requring to go close to deal damage. The healing part helps if he has high hp.

Ofc, it will be a lot nicer if there was variety of choices, but Riot seems to want to keep it exclusively for ads and aps get health in exchange. Imo it is very boring and Riot did gut many ap items that at this point we are limited to very little number of viable ap item. Rylais used to be a nice item, made sense for utility mage to provide utility, but that item was nerfed so hard that only champs with like overtime spells can make full use of it. Imo single target portion shouldve still granted a full slow, but no they make it the same for any spell.

I was wondering the same thing. Makes some ap champs have like 3000 hp

Pretty sure it's for battle mages who have to be tanky to survive. A good example is Aurelion Sol, who has really short range and demanding positioning. Try to play him pure AP and you realize just why he generally has two or three HP AP items. Because mages with short range need to be tanky, otherwise they just get dicked on for being short range and low survivability.

I know its for battle mages. The point im trying to make is that, mages in general should not be using health as a defense, they should have more creative defense items like AD does. Health is a tank stat.

And I agree, but let's look at it like this. Much of an ADCs defense items have some sort of life steal in them. Would the solution be more spell vamp? Items with say 60AP and some sort of spell vamp, maybe only for AP?

I think the solution would be more creative defense systems like Zhonyas.

=Maybe mages can have an item that allows 10% of damage taken go directly to their mana pool instead.

=Maybe an item that takes some damage and transfers it to a small aoe radius around that mage. Friendly minions or champs that get hit by the aoe radius take that damage instead.

=Maybe they can have an item that summons 3 minions that constantly surrounds the mage and body blocks incoming skill shots.

=They can even have an item that forms a much weaker/smaller windwall like Yas/Braum.

=Maybe constantly moving or casting spells will charge up a shield.

There are lots of creative solutions that don't involve health all of which a battle mage can use.

Wits End used to remove mana, they got rid of it for a reason.

That would be super troll and a bad idea, since tanks could stack pure HP and then soak up shots to be given to their team if they were to troll.

Probably add to being creep blocked.

No more windwalls that shit is cancer.

Ok that I can see.

Edge of night uses health.

I think it's mostly because mage items are somewhat difficult to make interesting stats-wise. AD stats have AD, AS, crit, lifesteal, Lethality/armor pen, and maybe on-hit damage if you count it. AP stats are AP, magic pen... and mana if you count it? For a few of those (Liandry's, Rylai's, Protobelt), they probably just have HP tacked on because having more AP or CDR would be overkill, and manaless champions buy them so mana would be not great. It would be nice if we had more AP stats so that different APs could itemize differently for different situations. ADs can go full AS like Kog, or full crit like Xayah, or full lifesteal like Kalista. Right now, all that matters for mages is how much AP, HP, and mana you eventually want.

I'm not saying that AP items are weak, because I think they're still pretty decent, but they're boring as hell and you typically buy the same build every game no matter what mage you play.

They need it because many of them have no sustain.

YOu also need some HP because they need to survive a trade vs an ADC. Even now, playing some of the AP mages, it's pretty insane how much damage a ADC can do with 100% crit (SS..etc).
