Maokai support question

I main Maokai, and I really like him in the bot lane for the obvious reasons. But with the buffs to his sapplings, they've become a little more strategic. Does anyone take them first as support against poke comps?

Yes. Keep playing Mao Support, so I can get free wins.

I've seen it work pretty well.

It does. Ignore him, that's a S2 account he's posting from. Its obvious he wants to troll.

In Bronze and Silver? Yeah, I've seen that too. But w/e. Play what you want, like I said. I will enjoy my free wins.

Insightful.

Lame players like you are the reason nothing new happens in this game until Riot forces it down your throat. Maokai support has been a thing for more than 4 years, longer than nautilus support.

I haven't played Maokai in a while after he became Fotm, but I always took his saplings level one for the extra vision and potential cheese early on. However, I never max them first because they're so expensive. The cooldown doesn't change and the duration doesn't increase enough to warrant leveling it first. I usually go for W max when support for a really long root for all ins and picks.

Had you not posted this I probably woulda been maxing saplings first. Much appreciate. I shall finally use my Maokai.

i've been playing maokai support for years and he's amazing. he's been made golden with his recent buffs but even before them, i was doing very good.

i ALWAYS take his saplings as my first skill. ALWAYS. they're mini wards with a slow effect. what's not to like? and now that they last longer, they help a lot more. when people see me take him support they question it. "take a tank" (lolz) or "take a healer". ummm no.

click root. knock up. slows. damage mitigation. what more could you want in a support? he's literally carrying me out of bronze.

I would never take e first on maokai, i have only ever started q or w. Cause doing gromp/krugs with e is a nightmare and wastes too much mana Not very viable to start it

Try laying out a hella ton of saplings and starting at blue?

I'm pretty certain that sapling spam will amount for a lot more damage over the duration of the fight with blue than you would get from your q. Personally though, I still choose the q for a couple reasons. One reason being that the knock back slightly reduces that damage you will take during the fight. The other reason is that, in my experience, people have somewhat predictable behavior when leashing. If I do too much damage too fast they will leave earlier than I want them to. This also prevents me from opening with smite while I'm getting a leash.
