One mistake is too costly

Rant:

Getting real sick of not only playing well, roaming to spread the wealth, and managing diplomatic relations with the short-fuses and trolls on my team and still losing because they chased bait for the 11th time despite my trying to explain why it's bad, and then having the enemy team - heretofore on the ropes - waltzing into our base and winning.

How do you not see this as bad game play? LoL went from a weak-link game to a troll game in one season. Sucking isn't even a problem anymore, it's now cluelessness. Winning lane doesn't matter because if at the 40 min mark someone causes and ACE - that's the game.

You should buff the holy hell out of towers immediately.

Welcome to the American school system, where a single F can fuck up your entire grade for the semester and we encourage our students to avoid mistakes at all possible instead of learning from them!

RookPusher1 votes

I don't know, I got a 65 on my final exam and still got a B+ this semester. Granted, it's Grad school and I had about 20 grades on coursework so it might be different.

Ralanr2 votes

It's a B+, not an A though. People usually only give a shit about A's.

I'm probably being too harsh on it.

RookPusher1 votes

Who cares about A's? A students tend to have mental breakdowns in the real world. Nothing in Academia is 100% transferable.

Kinda why I was ranting about how a single mistake is something that students are heavily taught to avoid.

We fear failure for what it is rather than see it as a learning experience. That's also why people give up easier when they don't see a solution (like that guy who spams early surrender). They see it as already failed and treat it like something that should be forgotten.

C students or worse always try to say that to soothe their bruised egos and delude themselves that they aren't dumb and/or lazy. Don't lower your B+ to that level.

RookPusher3 votes

It's not. C students are typically the best entrepreneurs. You have to understand that grades don't determine how smart you are, they determine how smart you are in the rules of academia. If anything, you ought to be worried that A's are the validation you need for your own intellect. Because eventually you stop getting graded, and then how will your self-esteem survive?

By how much you're paid. ;p

skyskee0081 votes

You don't get paid more for getting As though. After high school your GPA isn't super important as long as it's not shit

It's more important to be involved in outside activies or jobs etc because experience trumps education 9 times out of 10

Votable Jester1 votes

I was just saying that that's the natural next way people measure themselves. I did not say that the As necessarily result in more money being earned.

Troll for Trump1 votes

You don't get paid more for As, but you have a higher chance of getting into a better college, having lower tuition fees, and getting hired into a higher paying job.

Outside activities aren't more important than grades, or visa versa.

Ideally, you're supposed to overexert yourself by doing both.

People who look at your application for med school.

Troll for Trump1 votes

Yes, but the A students are more successful than the B students. Or C students.

America is supposed to make you take rigorous courses, and get high marks, forcing you into high stress high risk situations when people aren't in college yet.

Those are the types of people that go to good colleges, usually. You can either have fun, or you can get a good college. Pick one, and you won't get the other

RookPusher1 votes

You're assuming college is the finish line. It's not. Furthermore, you can absolutely have fun and get good grades.

Troll for Trump1 votes

It seems like college basically is.

You can have fun and get good grades, but it's very hard to juggle advanced classes (not just good grades in average classes; IBs or APs), Do sports (and not casually, varsity, or whatnot), and have fun.

You're supposed to be having fun with those things and be passionate about what you do, but you can't.

You may like doing X sport or Y subject, but they pressure you to overexert yourself and drain the fun out of it, essentially.

If you're able to have fun and be passionate about what you're doing, that means you aren't overexerting yourself, and have room to take more advanced classes, more extracurriculars, or whatnot.

If you don't, it looks bad for college resumes.

Hey listen, I'm not here to tell anyone they're wrong. But I'm old for these boards (34) and I've had some experiences. My advice to anyone listening is this:

Life's short, do what you love. As far as your career, it will likely refine itself in your 30's. When it does, then explore grad school options. But I personally went to a state school and was in the "If I like it I got an A, if I didn't I got a C" camp, and things are working out for me.

Grades are nice. I won't pretend they aren't. But for my two cents, once you find a passion, the only thing that matters is how much time/effort you put into improving. Which is easy if you've found your true passion. Just keep going, no matter what happens.

Ralanr1 votes

Wow, what started as a humorous jab is spiraling into something else.

RookPusher1 votes

LOOK WHAT YOU'VE DONE!

Randomonium1 votes

I'm also a bit old for these boards (31) and I'd be hesitant to say that grades don't matter. Grades don't guarantee success but they do open a lot of doors. I got a full ride to a $30k+ college thanks to my grades in high school. I then got a research position that paid for my graduate school thanks to my grades in college. Now I have a 6 figure job, a $600K house, and a ton of investments thanks to that graduate degree.

Yes experience is great but experience plus a high paying degree is even better. While there are ways to be successful without getting good grades I think it's much, much easier to succeed with good grades because it opens a lot of additional doors for you.

RookPusher1 votes

Sure, but the caveat there is that you were in, what, a biology program? Getting all A's in an English program won't make too much of a difference. Which is no condemnation of the degree, I would do it again if given the chance, but your success is partially due to market forces.

Despite the fact that no one can spell or compose a sentence, the demand isn't there. Similarly, not many can hold a conversation about CRISPR, but everyone seems to need it.

Randomonium1 votes

Mechanical Engineering.

I think you're highlighting on a much bigger issue here that doesn't have anything to do with grades but rather the usefulness of degrees. There are many degrees in college which aren't very useful because there is no demand for the degree. And yet some kids these days are going into $50K-$100k debt in order to get these degrees that aren't going to help them find a job no matter how well they do in school.

I definitely don't know what the answer is to that problem. However, if you are pursuing a technical degree then grades are extremely important and if you are pursuing a scholastic scholarship then grades are also extremely important.

RookPusher1 votes

You're having a different argument with me in order to win. And I don't care about winning so if you want to win, we can just say you're the winner.

My point is this, grades don't determine your future. I had the same job at 28, from a state school, with an English degree that an Oxford graduate had. Anecdotal? Sure. But the whole thing is anecdotal. There isn't a prescription for success. You've been told since 6, if you're a suburban kid, that grades matter. I've been on my own since 18, and after 16 years out here doing what it takes to get by I'm telling you dumber people are ahead of me (in some cases) and smarter people are behind me (in some cases). Grades do not determine your future.

It's going to be a sad day when you understand how easy it is to have millions of dollars thrown at you for a half-baked business concept and almost no one is giving a shit about your degree, let alone your grades.

Randomonium1 votes

Winning isn't the issue. You spreading some very misleading information to kids is the issue.

Like I said, grades aren't required for success but they do open a lot of doors. Stats will back me up on this one as well. People who do well in school and get higher degrees on average earn more money than people who don't. Can you be successful without a degree or without good grades? Absolutely. However, your chances are much better if you've graduated suma cum laude with a double major. For every one person who has succeeded without good grades or a degree there's a hundred who are in dead end jobs because they didn't push themselves to get those good grades or that more difficult degree. Yes there are a few who get lucky or who are just so gifted that they can succeed without that those prerequisites but I think its very misleading to say "grades don't matter."

When I look at everyone from my high school class and what they're doing now the most successful people were the ones who studied hard and got good grades (except for the 1 or 2 guys who went pro in a sport or something.) All the people who said "grades don't matter" are working hourly or dead end jobs with no career prospects.

If it was easy to have millions of dollars thrown at you then everyone would be a millionaire. People with money aren't near as stupid as you make them out to be.

You seem to think you're the only one with life experience. I've traveled the world and lived in every corner of the country. I have life experience in spades and I know what it takes to be successful because I am successful.

RookPusher1 votes

Any man who has to say he's successful isn't really successful. Also, at no point did I say I was the only one with experience.

It is easy to have millions thrown at you. Many don't do it because they fear the risk associated with starting a business.

The American education system fails people daily. I'm here to tell you it won't cripple you.

Randomonium1 votes

I never have to say I'm successful in real life. Hell, I bought my first house at 26 so I am obviously doing something right. However, with an anonymous profile on a video game forum I have to spell things out a little bit more. Its not like you know me or know my accomplishments so the only way I can explain to you my point of view is to tell you about them.

No, it isn't easy to have millions thrown at you. You are completely full of shit on this point. If it was true then you'd have millions of dollars. Businessmen don't just cough up seven figures of cash for anyone. I should know since I've brokered multiple deals in the 6 and 7 figures in the past year.

Yes the education system fails people because it leaves kids behind who are struggling. However, those who get ahead are statistically more likely to stay ahead. Sure it might not cripple you but it'll set you back 5-10 years. Like I said, all the successful people I know were the smartest guys and girls in their class who busted their ass every day. What you're advocating is laziness. Don't put in the work and someone will just come along and give you a handout. That's not how the world works.

Hard work is never a guarantee of success but it certainly does increase you odds.

Supreme Senpai691 votes

Lol I aced every single test and got a 190/200 on the final. But because of work, I missed like 5 days of class. My participation was a 0/100. My teacher also dropped our lowest test grade, but because my lowest grade was an A, it lowered my final grade. I barely passed that class with a C-. So infuriating that it's like this in almost every class. College isn't a measure of how smart you are but rather how much free time you have and if you have a job or not .-.

FooDang3 votes

You said one mistake is costly but your allies chased bait 11 times. Is it one mistake or 11 mistakes? I'm confused on what you're trying to say.

RookPusher1 votes

Let's separate them. there's 10 on one side, and 11 on the other.

10 of the mistakes are either early enough into the game, or traded with the other team to the point it balances. I'm in Bronze, there are mistakes.

The problem with the 11th is it's only assigned to one team. At this point, he gets killed and the team is able to take the 2nd mid-lane tower, the base tower, and the inhib. That's madness. I'm not suggesting this, because I'm be skinned alive, but if one tower in a lane goes down, it should give all other structures in that lane immunity for 60 seconds, building in some sort of stop-gap concept.

Again, I'm not foolish enough to suggest that, but the concept is right. You should be able to gun through 3 structures in a row because of an ACE.

FooDang1 votes

If you cant defend 2 towers and an inhib 4v5 by the time the idiot respawns then yea, GG

If it was late game it makes sense because late game sucks. End It

I am so torn this season. I really hate the snowballing and pressure to play early pressure meta junglers but I also disliked back in the past when average game time was like 40 mins. I miss season 6 honestly..... I am probably forgetting some things but meh.... I felt at least a good chunk of my games were fairly even. Right now just feels more of a shit show between who gets a lead who knows what to do with it.

Get really sick of people having over 12 deaths a game and trying to carry them. I get it... it happens to me once in awhile too but fuck man I can't just imagine almost every game is someones worst game of the season. I think last season my most deaths was like 13 in hundreds of ranked games. Maybe it was 16 idk... its usually not insanely high for a season especially when you see people with more deaths at least every few games.

My last ranked game on this account pissed me off because my teammates would not chill the f out and just play safe. Hell... I did more damage than my Caitlyn & Zyra support as tank Gragas. But the enemy team did have a lot of assassins that could kill my teammates quickly so I am sure I got a lot of dmg just peeling for them. But fuck man... Zyra had like 14-15 deaths.... now I know enemy had some assassins but that is just being careless. Now when I look at the end game stats I see I was exploited the most as enemy jungler had 5K MORE GOLD than me. Which is honestly embarrassing. But honestly this is what frustrates me with this season. Last season I would have said fuck it, I can carry as jungle so I will just farm and let you feeders keep feeding in hopes I can carry. But playing a tank because no one wants to fucking tank plus jungle being weaker I felt obligated to try and protect my carries more than just farm my jungle like enemy Khazix did. So I am sure I messed up and needed to farm more but fuck... if they just stayed more with me in late game and Zyra stopped face checking bushes into enemy team and instead sat back and played peel with me while doing that amazing Zyra damage we had a chance of winning. But nope..... everyone is apparently freaken clueless. And that is why I hate ranked. I know I suck but fuck I miss playing with people who at least were thinking on the same level as me. If I was I could have actually focused on farming up and peeling rather than going out of my way to save my teammates as I see them randomly walking past wards into enemy jungle about to be assassinated by Khazix & Kassadin in the late game. Fucking clueless people man.

RookPusher2 votes

Just curious, why the aversion to 40 minute games?

Dukues1 votes

Its a weird thing I don't even know how to describe it hell I don't even know what the average game time is right now compared to prior seasons. Low elo is weird, especially silver & bronze where people just don't really have any idea how to end a game at all. So when towers are strong and the meta is more late game is leads to really long low silver & bronze games. Now even when the meta is quicker I think the games still get dragged on way too long but maybe not quite as long. So I like it if towers aren't quite as strong as they were in the past so at least games are a little easier to end early on. But at the same time games feel a little too snowball for me right now.

I guess I just though season 6 was really well at least the later half of the season where games would get to mid & late game but weren't always super long 40+ min games. All the seasons starting to blend together now for me I don't even know anymore.

I think Riot advertises SR as being between 30 and 45 minutes on average, which I think is fair, though not everyone has the time commitment for those game lengths. (And usually I prefer TT, ARAM, or the RGMQ) Their shouldn't be a ton of edge cases going beyond that however, and preventing these edge cases is why Riot has introduced more tools to help end game. (Notably the Baron buff) It's also the reason why Tower damage/defense doesn't scale nearly as well as champion damage/defense. Because they are suppose to be notably weaker as the game goes on.

The thing I've noticed with longer games, is that the gold difference becomes meaningless, and the team who fell behind will eventually catch up, bringing things back to a stale mate. As a result, If you can't finish the game before you've reached your 6th item, it's going to become harder to do so, and an already long game becomes longer. This is also why Riot replaced the Dragon bounty with a stacking Dragon buff. (More recently, the elemental drakes)

If they chased for the 11th time then it wasent just one mistake. It was at least 11 mistakes that allowed the enemy team to get a lead to the point they could just walk up to the base

11 times is to emphasize that his teammates are idiots repeating the same mistake over and over. He also said that he himself carried hard enough that his team is actually winning, but because his teammates made a single mistake of chasing too far, he lost directly because of that.

You're getting way too many upvotes for this post. The title is arguably not even true depending on the elo of the person we're talking about, but it seems your title has nothing to do with your rant anyways so I'll just respond to that mostly.

Most people who play well and do good climb anyways. Now don't get me wrong, you'll have games that are unwinnable and you just get screwed no matter what because you were literally just dealt the worst hand possible, however the chances are extremely unlikely. If you play good you climb and you win more than you lose. Also the other problem is that you seem to be more focused on your team mates mistakes and THEM getting baited more than your own. Generally not a good thing to do if you're looking to improve your own gameplay. Most of the time even if what an ally is doing is bad an enemy will do equally something bad that can be punished. Most of the time chances to outplay your opponent balance out. Every action your opponents do has an optimal punish to do, and same for the enemy team.

You also seem to think that League is all of the sudden a "troll game." I has always been a troll game, and I have no clue what you mean by "weak-link" game. Also winning lane arguably has the most effect on the game currently because of how short the games can go if you punish early and snowball your own lead. Not every game needs to be dragged out to 40 minutes, you're just letting it happen to you.

And then you randomly say that towers need to be buffed. Which I also don't agree with, but that's more just an opinion really.

RookPusher2 votes

I'm not getting too many upvotes, the problem is your reading comprehension. Here's where you go wrong:

  1. I make a statement
  2. I explain why I made the statement
  3. I explain how to measure said statement
  4. You apply your own opinion - not the metric by which the thing is being measured - and you say I'm wrong.

That isn't how it works.

LegacyDAP1 votes

Okay so let's use your reasoning:

  1. "One mistake is too costly."

Okay fair enough, why?

  1. "Getting real sick of not only playing well, roaming to spread the wealth, and managing diplomatic relations with the short-fuses and trolls on my team and still losing because they chased bait for the 11th time"

Literally has nothing to do with your statement if this is your explanation on it.

  1. "Sucking isn't even a problem anymore, it's now cluelessness. Winning lane doesn't matter because if at the 40 min mark someone causes and ACE."

Sucking and cluelessness are pretty much one in the same. Somebody who is clueless in general basics sucks.

  1. You're saying you're applying the metric by which the thing is being measured, but it doesn't seem there's anything being measured. It literally sounds like you're arguing against your point. "my team and still losing because they chased bait for the 11th time." The way you say this makes it sound like 1 mistake isn't costly at all.

You saying towers needing a buff isn't being based on by any measure except your rank and team mates. It's still an opinion, for the record a popular opinion on the boards, but it's still an opinion, but my problem is you didn't provide any reasoning behind this other than you getting aced at 40 minutes and losing.

Supreme Senpai691 votes

"till losing because they chased bait for the 11th time despite my trying to explain why it's bad, and then having the enemy team - heretofore on the ropes - waltzing into our base and winning."

Otherwise what you are witnessing is the person consistently outplaying you.
