"Kennen can't instakill you"

the fuck you mean mate? kennen can instakill your whole team just with proto+zhonya https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ARldiVGwm8

this stupid piece of shit has one of the best laning phase ever, gets a brand lvl of AOE damage combined with AOE cc and can be untargable since zhonya is a core no matter what's the enemy team.

people are just running out of ideas to defend cancer.

Knoyle19 votes

The changes to his ult really put him in a good spot tbh

Sebbo the Plebbo28 votes

It wasn't only the change to his ult though. The item changes in the mid year mage update were perfect for him. The holy trinity of item 3157 item 3152 item 3001 gave him everything he could possibly want:

  • Health
  • Magic resist
  • Armour
  • AoE Magic penetration approximately the same size as his ult
  • Invulnerability that synergises super well with his ult
  • 30% CDR
  • Damaging gap closer
  • A sizeable amount of AP

All this packed into 3 relatively cheap items with flexible build paths that allow itemisation in the laning phase? Combined with the buffs he got in the mid season update I'm suprised people weren't complaining about him sooner

PlanetWarwick1 votes

I just stopped playing kennen after worlds. Protoype isn't that big a powerspike, it's mainly just the Hextech revolver. Prototype honestly doesn't get used effeciently laning-phase wise and it's hard to time well. Besides, Kennen's only legit engage is flash unless your entire team decides to facecheck an unwarded bush.

AirKingNeo13 votes

Protobelt is cheap and does a ton of damage. What patch are you on?

TRIGGERED

Can people stop calling item 3001's passive Magic Penetration? It's Magic (Resist) Reduction. Huge difference. I can explain to you if you need an explanation.

Skaiserus3 votes

I need one, because I never understood the difference.

Pope Glitterhoof5 votes

Magic Penetration, of which the effect is discernible, only benefits the wielders of Magic Penetration items, runes and masteries, depending on how much Magic Penetration they severally and individually acquire.

Magic Reduction on the other hand, benefits the entire team, and can be clearly recognized by reading the targets' magic resist statistic. The whole team will deal increased magic damage (if any) to these targets because of the reduced magic resist.

RisenDarkKnight7 votes

Also, flat magic pen is calculated after % pen (void staff/piercing thoughts), but Flat reduction is applied first, so it has less synergy with void staff.

Another thing is that flat reduction can reduce a target's MR below 0, so if you have like an Amumu on your team applying his passive to a squishy target with no MR items you can do more than true damage, but magic pen maxes out at full damage.

Pope Glitterhoof3 votes

Yes you are completely right.

@CerberusFury In case you are confused by RisenDarkKnight's comment, here's the summary:

  1. Priorities of Magic Penetration/Reduction: Flat Magic Reduction > Percentage Magic Reduction > Percentage Magic Penetration > Flat Magic Penetration (so the value of item 3135's Percentage Magic Penetration is reduced by a bit if you buy item 3001 as well)
  2. Flat Magic Reduction can reduce Magic resist below zero whilst Flat Magic Penetration cannot.
  3. Since 2 is true, Flat Magic Reduction can allow someone to deal more than the intended magic damage (the damage you see on tooltip) to targets below 0 MR, whilst Flat Magic Penetration at max deals the intended damage since it can only at most psuedo-reduce a target's MR to 0.
Ziovi3 votes

Altough it is pretty rare to reduce someone's MR under 0, but yeah, it's technically possible. You need some extra source of magic reduction, like amumu's passive. It was good to farm minions faster too, sending their MR to -20, but since 6.9 the aura only affects champions.

LordGeovanni1 votes

thing is Magic pen is broken while the magic resist reduction is actually balanced. the thing is magic pen is too strong and magic resist is too weak

This is so not true. I've brought him up several times in the past. People just didn't listen. If getting played is what it takes for people to get it through their heads that he's broken, then I thank the pros.

I live for these circle jerks. Someone should keep an archive too.

Veltox2 votes

The only entertaining part are poor arguments about why said champ should be nerfed.

LordGeovanni1 votes

Circle jerk must have existed since season 4 then because this shit has been broken since season 3

Meep Man22 votes

Kennen was balanced until his Mage Update ultimate change which let it damage enemies more than three times. Simply limiting the number of times it can damage each enemy to 3 per cast would balance it.

Poske3 votes

No they broke him when they allowed him to use W in his Maelstrom area without thunders zapping anyone

hhaavviikk15 votes

what also matters is that the ult now hits ALL enemies at the same time, previously the ult could be overwhelmed since it could only hit 1 champion at a time now it hits everyone at once, also I looked at the ult changes and here they are:

R - Slicing Maelstrom LIGHTNING ROD: Slicing Maelstrom is no longer limited to striking the same target three times per cast, but only the first three strikes on a target will apply Mark of the Storm DAMAGE: 80/145/210 (+0.4 ability power) per bolt (unchanged) NEW DAMAGE FALLOFF: 25% per bolt (50% minimum damage) DURATION: 3/4/5 seconds ⇒ 3 seconds at all ranks TICK RATE: 0.25 seconds ⇒ 0.5 seconds MAX DAMAGE PER TARGET: 240/435/630 (+1.2 ability power) ⇒ 300/544/788 (+1.5 ability power) EMP: Each tick now strikes every target in the area, including minions and monsters

the ult got 3 damage buffs:

  1. it now hits all targets in the area
  2. it no longer has a cap on champion hits
  3. it's AP ratio got buffed by 0.3

I feel like it either needs to have a cap again on champions or not hit all targets at the same time

Meep Man4 votes

I think the First one needed to happen, but it didn't need any damage buff really. It just felt clunky before and it needed to feel more fluid. The changes straight up buffed the damage output.

Spoofghoul5 votes

also don't forget the change before his ult got changed

in an earlier change riot made it so w would hit everyone inside ult.

with clever positioning you can use e then protobelt on top of enemies and dash trough pressing E + R for instant aoe stun, after stun disappears use zhonya, and boom 4 seconds of survivability + instant stun + 2 marks ready on everyone after So when zhonya's ends use W again for a second stun for more time where they can't retaliate, and then they are probably dead after being aoe stunned twice

kennen was already sort of op after all the changes but the itemization pushed him over the top as well

He now has a bunch of items which are really good on him item 3152 item 3001 item 3157 gives survivability mobility and damage as well as 30% cdr

He just got too much going for him right now

Rivuo13 votes

I fuckin hate kennen. But facts are facts that hes not a problem, its the items he builds that makes it a problem.

item 3152 should not be in this fuckin game period.

Ahristocats6 votes

it's not op on a lot of champions, just on kennen. you don't nerf an item just for a champ.

Lordk0z9 votes

The item is not only OP, it's a bad idea. An item that gives a dash is just asking for trouble.

MynadarxCZ2 votes

I bet you would get a heart atack after one game of Dota then xD.

Lordk0z2 votes

I play dota.

Alot.

In fact, my main is Magnus, who uses Blink Dagger (The item you are no doubt refering to) so much he basically buys it right after boots, and usually before upgrading his boots.

Of course, Blink Dagger is part of Dota's balance of power, which is noticably more "intense" than league. Just about every Dota character or item would be labelled OMGWTFOP in League. item 3152 is basically a Dota-tier item. Putting it in league without changing anything else, as I said, is just asking for trouble.

Yes you do actually. A large amount of items in the game are specifically tuned to a small group of champions, if not a single champion. So if a champion is too strong with a specific item that was tuned for them then yes, the item gets nerfed.

Ekko Kennen Vladimir and while not core, but I have seen it do very well also on Annie Fiddlesticks Morgana so it's not just strong on Kennen. And besides, before everyone started rushing item 3152 as their first item on Kennen and would instead rush a 1st item item 3001 or item 3157 almost no one complained about him and he was barely seen.

Now he get a few buffs, and some streamer/pro plays him and now everyone has to copy them and play him now. Most of the concerns is from Protobelt though, just nerf that item and see if he falls out.

Bârd11 votes

No one has ever said that Kennen can't instakill you. Whoever said that is either a complete moron or was coaching a Mundo.

As for the rest of your post, no.

In that clip, Kennen was able to burst down 3 very squishy targets, as well as finishing off an already low Olaf.

He didn't just have "proto+zhonya". Get your facts straight, he had item 3152 item 3157 item 3135 item 3020 item 1058 item 1026. If your champion can't do something well with that many items, that champion is just bad.

As for "The best laning phase ever", that's complete and utter bullshit; His only real strength early game is his (rather mediocre) range.

By the way, ranged tops are not OP. If that were true, we would see a hell of a lot more Teemo Quinn

If you are a bruiser/fighter/tank (as most toplaners are), you just have to survive under your tower for 6 minutes until you can pick up item 3211, at which point he poses no threat to you.

Hell, if you are someone like Irelia Renekton Pantheon , you don't even need to wait. Kennen is so goddamn squishy that he won't be able to deal with YOU. Oh are you NOT one of those 3? Don't worry, on the off chance your jungler comes to your lane pre-6, Kennen will likely be put in a Flash or Die scenario. Unless you get the gank at a bad time, and he has his W passive up, he can't stun both of you.

In mid, he is even worse; his range advantage is completely nullified against most opponents, and his only way of pushing the wave is either slow (autos) or extremely dangerous (E+W the wave). Not only that, but if gets matched up against someone like Leblanc, he is completely fucked. People like her can force Kennen out of lane or kill him extremely easily, and oh boy...

If Kennen wins lane, he is a menace. If he survives lane, he is a factor. If he loses lane, however, he is one of the most useless sacks of shit you have ever seen.

Without damage, all he brings to the table is a 1.25 second stun (not even immediate). Hell, he is so squishy that he might not even get to do that before he gets hit by a primordial burst.

Oh, and you can't say that Kennen can go untargetable just because Zhonyas is a core item. By that logic, Bard Janna Thresh and the like are sources of true sight, since they all buy item 2043

And by the way, none of this is new. Kennen has been doing this same shit since he was released. He is better at it than he has been recently, thanks to the mage update, but he still isn't as strong as when Zhonyas Ring was here, and his current power level is hardly exceptional. People are just calling him OP because he is getting picked for once and they don't know how to deal with him.

Here is the clip, by the way https://youtu.be/69j-uGa6xkM

I guess Orianna is cancer OP too, then?

You fcking wot m8? No, seriously, I can get behind pretty much all of this info, but this one is striking NOT true. You are never useless as Kennen because of one that one factor: You provide CC. Consistent CC. AoE CC at that. While yes, if you are midlane you are mostly not going to be able to do much, but as toplane and sometimes midlane as long as you get a protobelt and a Zhonya (which if you decide to go toplane off-tank you are even more dangerous since you cant be bursted down properly) you are a wolf in sheep's clothing because people forget this all the time. He's not solely damage. You have a better AoE CC than pretty much anyone in the game (Not all. Its still dependent on positioning and some can do it better, so don't say i said EVERYONE) since its instant activation and still deals decent damage even when behind. He's not OP, but you can't underestimate him even when behind. CC is so reliable in this game, and its a reason why Kennen will still be relevant for a CC AP toplane if or after he receives nerfs or items he build receive nerfs. Its one of the big reasons why Zac came back when everyone else got nerfed, and he was still viable before that thanks to the fact that you can initiate with CC, have pretty consistent damage, provide the ability to Off tank, and you scale with AP, which most players do not fully dedicate resistances to like you can with armor.

Mag resist is super duper hard to buy.

NineTailedMystic2 votes

On certain champions it is. If you have to build it at a bad time as a mid or ADC it can make you irrelevant damage wise. Abyssal won't save you from Kennen either.

Ok, stop now. Kennen has a 51.39% win ratio. That is far from unbalanced. While I agree that protobelt is ridiculous on him, he does have lane counters. Irelia absolutely destroys him. Many ranged champs can at least deal with him, if not excel against him with superior poke (ie jayce). And as for his ridiculous teamfights, he is entirely dependent on his ultimate for maximal effectiveness. If you can avoid clumping up when his ult if ready, you will be fine. Playing against a kennen is very similar to playing against an amumu, except that amumu has a MUCH better ranged engage tool to get into ult range.

Except that Amumu has to hit his bandage to actually engage, he can't move his ultimate, and he doesn't do nearly as much damage as Kennen.

MonkeyMadness2 votes

If you can't land a bandaid, you need to uninstall and find a new game. It's literally the easiest skillshot in the entirety of the game, with the exception of those that pass through units (ie zyra snare and ahri Q).

Also, amumu actually has very high ap scaling and in the current meta often will get 3 ap items (runic echoes, rylais, abyssal) and will actually deal very respectable damage with generally more reliable hard cc.

I would say Lee Sin's Q is easier to land, given that it has a slighty higher missile speed.

But this is still not enough to compete with Kennen, which will build full AP and will bring a item 3135 to the table (Amumu can't do that because he will become squishy, therefore Amumu has problems with enemies that build magic resistance - yes, Amumu shreds magic resistance with his passive, but it is only a small, flat value and works against only one enemy at once)

Amumu may do respectable damage but Kennen brings levels of damage that exceeds those of Amumu, especially since Kennen has higher AP scaling when compared to Amumu.

MonkeyMadness1 votes

Shorter range, smaller hitbox, but generally I'd say they are comparable. However, your point is rather irrelevant, as amumu is MUCH easier to play than lee, and even this ability (sonic wave AND resonating strike) are MUCH more complex than amumu's band aid.

Amumu may do respectable damage but Kennen brings levels of damage that exceeds those of Amumu, especially since Kennen has higher AP scaling when compared to Amumu.

And so does virtually every other big AP champ, but the majority of them are not considered unbalanced at all (minus a few abusive interactions with rylais). Kennen is not overpowered, he is just easy to play and very strong in lane, and therefore frustrating to play against. If you pick a solid counter into him, he's way fucked. He literally cannot do shit to even a half decent irelia.

I wouldn't really say that Kennen is necessarily overpowered, but he is indeed very strong, and there aren't many ways for most top laners to deal with him early in the game, on top of that, they are outscaled by him. Combine that with the fact that Hextech Protobelt is a strong item currently, and you have one of the strongest top laners in the game. It has nothing to do with him being frustrating to play against. He is strong indeed.

Also, I've yet to see an Irelia capable of hard countering Kennen, this sounds more like a skill based matchup to be honest

MonkeyMadness1 votes

You missed the point. Lee is 110% harder to use than amumu, no matter how you slice it. Done. That's all we need to say for this comparison, and tbh, the only reason you brought this up is to target my argument in a very backwards manner, so leave lee out of this for now, he's irrelevant to our discussion.

I wouldn't really say that Kennen is necessarily overpowered, but he is indeed very strong

No doubt, this is what I'm trying to say. But people in posts like these are whining about him being "unbalanced" or "broken" and this is simply not the case. He is a lane bully when played properly, but so are rumble and darius, and Riot has left them alone for nearly a year. Kennen is also INCREDIBLY flash reliant for his big aoe wombos. Sure, he can abuse protobelt, but the distance really isn't sufficient to catch the entire enemy team, unless they are completely oblivious to what's going on.

Also, I've yet to see an Irelia capable of hard countering Kennen, this sounds more like a skill based matchup to be honest

It's awful. I consider myself a decent kennen player (I've played him for years, albeit not in a serious manner) and I have yet to beat an irelia in lane. Even when I get an early lead, she comes back quickly with her ridiculous sheen power spike and pwns me. She can stun, get of some damage and get out before you can really counter attack, and her sustain is just entirely superior.
