Aren't melee champs supposed to be tanky and damaging, while ranged champs get range + damage?

Isn't that the whole distinguishing balance point between the two classes?

So then why are ranged champions building steraks/maw/gauntlet while also having range? Where is the tradeoff exactly

Melee champions aren't inherently tanky -- they are more durable.

And the offset of ADCs building those items to make them more durable is that they don't have as much damage as if they had gone full damage

The offset is that ADCs building these tanky damage hybrid items is that they don't have as much RELATIVE damage. But it turns out it's irrelevant since these tanky damage hybrid is more than enough damage to get by anyway - and dead carries do no dps.

ADC's were buffed with their whole Marksmen Update - which caused Assassins to rise in power. So in response, ADC's are building half tanky builds to survive and then use their superior in built DPS to come out on top. Why Riot decided to give ADC's their own update and buff them, with them being the most influential type of champions in the game for years, is beyond me.
