Towers should destroy traps if no enemy minions are there.

JavelinJoe··138 votes·3,313 views

Why would a tower not disarm an enemy trap if it has nothing else to shoot at? It just makes sense that it would.

Edit: Just for clarity, you would not be able to juggle aggro by placing traps. Traps would have a lower priority than champions and minions so they would only be targeted if the tower literally had nothing else to shoot at.

I think traps under turrets should just despawn faster, like for Azir soliders.

JavelinJoe2 votes

lol, had that idea a while back as well, although it was mostly for Caitlyn. Here

Hollow Miracles7 votes

So much hate for Caitlyn. Thought we were over this guys. She's always been a lane bully and I doubt that'll change in the near-future.

Also, on the subject of towers targeting traps, wouldn't that mean a Cait and Nidalee/Gangplank/etc botlane could juggle aggro with their traps/barrels to get a bunch of free hits on the tower? Sounds like it would make things worse, not better

Stop looking for things to complain about.

Battlecast Sona1 votes

basically step 1: Caitlyn is kinda oppressive in lane to a lot of matchups step 2: complain about Caitlyn while targeting literally something she's been able to do since release (trap under the tower, THIS IS NOT A NEW FEATURE) Step 3: ignore any and all actual problems with the mechanic (only issue with traps under tower is that you can place traps behind the turret and they're literally invisible) step 4: farm upvotes

JavelinJoe1 votes

I made a seperate post about the invisable trap issue here. In regards to step 2, while traps under towers is nothing new, her new mechanic making them proc long range headshots, and having up to 5 out at once is.

MagicFlyingLlama6 votes

Most traps cannot even be targeted by autoattacks, and for the same reason minions and monsters ignore wards and traps.

JavelinJoe3 votes

But towers man, towers are op.

Schàdenfreude4 votes

YEAH IF THEY ATTACKED THE TRAPS THEY WOULD STEAL MY GOLD

OF COURSE THEY ARE OP AT STEALING FARM

JavelinJoe1 votes

But you just said that you cant target most traps anyways, so what gold would you lose?

Dengeden5 votes

Make it so Cait is even more of a farmbot and don't allow her to apply even a miniscule amount of pressure or let her outplay you, right. I'll remember this "nerf Caitlyn regardless of her actual performance" meme for later, might come in handy.

it be lìke that3 votes

i love when people try to call her traps "minimal pressure" they are ridiculous especially in lane. Let the enemy push up, max your traps first, cut them off from the wave. boom no farm so much control, go ahead, step on the trap, oh wait, increased range headshot for 1/4th of your hp each time.

His idea blows, since it would help her more than hurt her, her number of available traps should be lowered, and they should time out.

Dengeden4 votes

You managed to put forward an even worse idea. I'm impressed.

I didn't call the pressure minimal, I meant that her ability to outplay you with traps in sieges is the only thing that's keeping her from being a farmbot.

Traps do time out and the number of available traps is perfect since they're ridiculously easy to avoid. If you're in a siege and a squishy like Cait can line your lane with traps, you're gonna eat poke regardless of who you're up against.

tooomine3 votes

ker kit is so bad already, in terms of DPS. siege is the one area where she has some mid game dominance, and even then, she gets hard outscaled by so many other people in that class of champion.

it be lìke that1 votes

Her traps time out after like 5000 seconds, her design atm is just awful.

an adc shouldnt have massive late game control, she is a glass cannon and you should be rewarded with an easy kill for getting within melee range of her, but you cant because, trap trap trap trap trap trap, all lined up right in front of your inhib turret and adjacent sides.

btw you said "minuscule pressure" (except you spelled it wrong) which is about as close to splitting fucking hairs with "minimal" as you can get.

Every other adc with a trap ability, they did it right, caitlyn, its beyond wrong.

Dengeden1 votes

Oooo a grammar obsessed guy who doesn't care about mathematical accuracy, kek. I DON'T CARE ABOUT THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN "minimal" AND "minuscule"!!! MY POINT WAS THAT WITHOUT HER TRAP LINE SHE HAS NO PRESSURE AT ALL!

Trap -> tenacity -> trap no longer matters as much. Go get in melee range of her now. You think the old Cait wouldn't 1v1 you for getting close to her? She's a late game ADC, her traps were still used to kite melees as she still uses them now and her caliber net had better range too.

An "awful design" would be a champion who has no outplay potential whatsoever. Like your favorite champion, no doubt. Jhin, the only other ADC with a trap ability uses his traps to either waveclear or root you with W (remind you of anyone?). That is terrible design, they're without a doubt the worst part of his kit.

Battlecast Sona1 votes

hey guys, let's take a champion whose literal only mid-game strength is her ability to seige and control areas of the map. EVEN THOUGH WE JUST ADDED THESE ADDITIONAL TRAPS IN THE MARKSMAN UPDATE TO MAKE CAITLYN HAVE A NICHE, let's remove them because she's "oppressive" (unplayed in pro scene?).

Caitlyn is not oppressive, people are just idiots. It's not hard to punish Caitlyn for stepping forward to trap under your tower, and literally all you have to do is not die to her in lane and let her fall off in the mid-game. Her mid-game contributions to teamfights are so much lower than 90% of the other ADCs in the game, and she offers very little utility outside of traps (which lose a lot of power outside of the laning phase). Take something like Ashe or Jhin into her and watch her and her entire team suffer when you hit mid-game and have long range initiation options and Caitlyn has... traps. And headshot.

She's absolutely fine, people just aren't used to her actually doing what she's supposed to do (for some reason), since she wasn't actually very good at it before.

it be lìke that1 votes

I'd much rather her just be an oppressive lane bully adc, exactly what her kit should make her, guaranteed headshots, her q is great poke, there is nothing fun about her traps to play against.

Unplayed in the pro scene? Right before mid summer, wasnt she in almost every game and considered the best adc available in lcs?

JavelinJoe1 votes

Her, Ezreal and Lucian

Dengeden1 votes

Until people discovered how hard hard engage ADCs screw her over.

You don't want her to outrange and outdamage you 1v1 with traps, instead you want her to outrange and outdamage you with Q and Headshots? Yeah, that makes no sense.

Redaga3 votes

cause that is 1 more target towers will have rather than a champ.

in the past towers would aim to wards.

people will just push mid. kill it, put down 10 wards and rush down the tower withing needing a single minion.

Bagguette2 votes

This might actually be a buff and help cait dive you with a headshot auto lol

JavelinJoe5 votes

How is this a buff exactly? The tower would clears traps now.

Teslyn27 votes

because you dont understand. if i can throw a trap out and the tower targets it before it hits a minion i can stop 1 tower shot from hitting a minion. that is actually a pretty big deal in a case by base situation.

i play zyra and often i will spawn plants around a tower so the tower has to shoot plants before minions.

minions reduce turrets armor. so having minions alive around a tower means i can do more damage to a tower. if you give more champions this ability towers would drop faster.

understand tower targeting priority

Champions that attacked friendly champions > pets > minions > champions

you put an additional layer to protect the minions may not have the most positive effect that you are looking for.

JavelinJoe6 votes

Zyra's plants are not traps, Stuff like Caitlyn's and Nidalee's are what I am talking about. Also, I said that these are only targeted when no minions are around, so they would not draw focus until the wave is cleared.

You can still time it to use the first turret shot on a trap as minions approach turret aggro range, or take the first shot in a turret dive even if the enemy played smart and cleared the wave out first.

Velzard of Koz1 votes

Or we could design it smarter and cause it to swap aggro the way it does when champion attacks you under your turret. Note he doesn't say initially the tower must shoot but that it disarms the trap, thus the delay would be insignificant.

RavenMagus1 votes

The issue is - and this is what they're saying - if you time it well, the turret is already shooting at the trap when the minions walk into range, so even if it switches aggro to a minion immediately, it's just attacked and needs to wait to shoot again - delaying the first shot against minions no matter what.

Now, there are still alternatives to this, of course - the trap disarm could, say, use a different effect/ability/animation that only occurs when the tower has nothing to shoot in range, but isn't the normal attack - so that it shoots at minions immediately again when they walk back into range.

Yes that's what I mean there:

Holy shit minions lower turret resistance?

THIS WHY WE NEED A TUTORIAL PEOPLE

Durfain3 votes

It's so that the Xin Zhao's, Master Yi's and Tryndamere's of the world don't go backdooring turrets without minions until they're super fed.

DeathBot6666 votes

You never noticed that when you tank tower you do less damage?

66% damage reduction if their are no nearby enemy minions.

The 2nd Horseman1 votes

I literally thought that turrets took reduced damage from champions they hit (I don't even know where I picked up that misconception), but you see what I mean with the need of just a basic tutorial on turrets, quite possible the biggest element in league.

dapositiveviking1 votes

read the items/buffs that show up when you click a tower

Warlord Zudane1 votes

The new guides do detail all of this, if you haven't read them I highly recommend it.

You DO realize he literally said in the title "If no enemy minions are there". So it's not much that he doesn't understand but you can't read properly. The only case possible would be throwing trap as minion enters, so that Turret targets the trap and delays the minion killing by circa 2 seconds. However this could be easily fixed by aggro changing the way it works on champions attacking you under your turret.

you put an additional layer to protect the minions may not have the most positive effect that you are looking for.

By what he says, the layer would be absolutely the last thing, even after champions freely walking in so you wouldn't even be able to delay the aggro when solodiving.

llamasx2 votes

I think he's talking about buying 1/2 second for the minions. Like dropping a trap in tower range right before the first minion enters tower range so the tower hits the trap first. I think it'd still be more of a tower buff than nerf. Buying 1/2 second before each minion wave won't make a huge difference most of the time.

Velzard of Koz1 votes

Additionally If the tower would disarm the trap instantly instead of shooting, it wouldn't even be a second. Maybe half a second.

Spoofghoul1 votes

so why not permanently give towers their anti backdoor armor

that would surely resolve this issue

You can't deny her laning is opressive and to safe combined with how ridiculous headshot can get late game.

tooomine6 votes

can deny that her headshot is oppressive. it is, statistically speaking, one of the least powerful damage steroids in the game.

Her laning isn't oppressive, either, though. a trap max means she has no trading potential or waveclear. god forbid you take someone like MF, tristana, ashe, or sivir to the game and literally carry your gold to the shop in the skull of your dead lane opponent.

Bladerunner77772 votes

Those are literally the only two things going for her: lane bully and lategame carry

Her midgame is trash

Junkο9 votes

Doesn't make playing against her feel any less terrible.

Knalxz1 votes

OP never said the towers should shoot the traps, just said they should disarm them when no other target is nearby.

JavelinJoe1 votes

I used both actually. Destroy in the title while disarm and "shoot at" are in the description. I was not entirely sure what would be more balanced / fair. On one side, destroying would render the ability useless unless actively sieging a tower with a wave, but once the wave is gone, the traps would be destroyed, thus loosing their pressure and some of their value, it also would makes their usually longer cooldown a bit less justified. On the other hand, if they were only disabled, the pressure would only temporarily be disabled, but it would become much more confusing and harder for defenders to time when traps will reactivate, despawn, and/or deactivate. Not to mention it is one more thing to pay attention to on both sides.

I am leaning more towards destroy though, since disarming more or less is the same as it is now. Currently traps under towers are revealed if hidden, and can be cleared by players. They also tend to be more useless then beneficial if no enemies are nearby to utilize them when they go off (unless you are Caitlyn and get the range increase for a headshot).

All Day Tay Tay1 votes

fun fact. turrets used to kill wards when there were no minions. smart players used (abused) this by buying all wards for all 5 members on spawn. they ran mid, placed all the wards in front of the tower, and took the turret at like 4 minutes.

JavelinJoe1 votes

I remember hearing about that a while back, and this is/was not my intent from the post.
