Is The Grading System Good or Bad For The League?

Im starting to think this grading system might be hurting the league. Im starting to see some selfish people who seem to be more worried about their grade than winning.

I just went through back to back games of this.

The 1st game we was dominating. We had a chance to push and win around the 29 min mark. But our tank recalled and pinged and said dont end....I pinged nexus turrets but the others recalled so i had to back off. Voli said he wanted more farm because he was trying to get a S grade. Us backing off led to the game going another uneeded 9 minutes and other team almost making it into our base. We did still win but it wasnt worth the risk.

Then the 2nd game

Before the game even started our support typed "easy s" after the last pick was made. Then once the lane phase ended he spent most of the rest of the game split pushing. Even late game when enemy was in our base he would stay out split pushing. On time he literally ran past the enemy attacking mid inhibitor to go farm bot lane that still had the 2nd turret up. He was clearly trying to farm his way to a better grade even if it meant leaving us outnumbered to defend the base.

We did not win and he did not get his "easy s."

Has anyone else seen more and more people playing like this? Costing games trying to be heros or pad their stats trying to get a S?

Good because you win stuff that would cost you RP and bad because you're devoting time for the damn chests and keys. And sometimes more RP for keys.

The grading system is fine, linking the grading to the mastery is what set this off. Hextech boxes were a nice reward for playing well, but I generally didn't see people farming them. Now, with mastery stuff, people are trying to get S grades for the tokens.

I think it's pointless, how the grade is calculated isn't explained or presented.

It's like taking a test and getting back the score, without knowing what you missed. Then retaking the test. You know you only got a 70% on it, but which 30% you missed is still unknown. You don't necessarily know where you need to improve to do better the next time.

On top of that, sometimes you're just not the carry that game, and inevitably get a lower score. If i'm a top lane fighter, sometimes you go 15/2 and carry, other times you go 2/8/24, but your job that game was to tank and protect the carry which was more powerful than you. You might get an S for the first game, but not the second game, even though going 2/8 was the correct way to play that game.

I was having trouble getting S with Soraka. No matter how perfect my games were, it would always give me A+. I finally got my S, and here's the only way I could do it:

2/0/28, heal over 50k health, and place 52 wards. I spent so much time placing extra wards, none of them were strategic any more. We lost vision because I had to keep spamming wards in useless locstions and back for more. But I got my S, and I got my level 6.

Can't you just take Soraka mid? She has really good poke and an anti-dive/initiate snare... Easy S's

I used to do that before mastery 6 and 7 existed, but at this point I usually just play ranked, and if that pick ever fails I'll get reported.

It's not like it would be too bad as long as you pick it in a safe match up and not blindly. Just buy the AP Support items (Grail+Ardent) and function as a second support with maybe a GLP or something thrown in for bulk. You won't be Lulu levels of good but it's definitely not the worst thing in the world.

You could also used her top or ADC or jungle..........Without knowing numbers I would say Soraka has the longest range in the game when it comes to basic attack.

With the items this game has right now you can basically play any champ in the jungle. I proved this in a bot game when i used Soraka to Solo Baron.

Yeah it was a bot game, but with smite and a jungler item i was able to do it.

here's the link to see the build i used to finally get it done after a few attempts. To see the build that did it you have to scroll to my post at the bottom.

I've gotten at least 3 S+ on Soraka without doing anything cheesy like that. Just played normally, didn't die much, healed a lot (30-50k average), got a couple kills, placed normal wards. :\

Yeah....like i said in anothe rpost the numbers needed are skewed from people staling games to fluff their stats.

Placing uneeded extra wards is about the only way i intentionally inflate my stats. When im support....if im about to go base...i always just drop every ward left in my sightstone as im running to where im goign to base at. Or if im already there ill just drop them right wehre im standing before i press B to base.

I think its good

Yeah i had games like that an it was annoying cause we ended up losing

but i had a game when we were already losing so we all split pushed to try to get s rank cause our farm was low and we ended up winning cause our yi went from 1-5 with 60cs to 8-5 with 350cs

Riot stated in their Ask Riot How You Get That S+ On Urgot that they would not release their grading formula because they "don’t [want to] reveal [...it] so that it can’t be min-maxed as we really want to avoid incentivizing playing for stats like CS or K/D/A rather than playing to win." - basically, they don't want players to play for the grade and instead want them to play "normally" as if the Grading system was never there.

However, they fail to realize that by not releasing the exact formula, players will play as selfishly as they can, often times overshooting the numbers. If you really want that S+, what do you think you have to do for it? Usually, your ideas would be exaggerated and next time you go into a game with that mindset of "I'm going to try my best to get an S+ this game", you'll probably steal kills, play incredibly safe, or do things that players normally wouldn't do. But, the formula is so unspecific that playing "normally" won't get you even an S- unless you get incredibly lucky. Getting an S+ without starving your team is not that easy of a task just because the formula has to be so exact.

If Riotoli gives us the formuoli, we can figure out exactly what we need to do in order to get what we want, which means that Riot can effectively control the playerbase into positive play. Players will want that sweet S+, so if they know what criteria they need to meet, they no longer sit in the dark about what is considered "good" CS, kills, etc.. It will also give players the opportunity to tune places where they underachieve, which can promote better play behavior.

It might extort the ranked system, but at least it will be fair. Climbing in Ranked might actually be harder than it is now simply because you then you would have players who know exactly what they should be striving in, and they can compare their game statistics to the formula and see what they need to improve upon, and improve on it.

It doesn't matter, players have already figured out that you need to get high cs and place a ward somewhere.

VvVVvV1 votes

yeah and the biggest flaw in the system is the fact that you can basically play any support in any other roles beside support..and as long as you dont feed, you will get a S. This is for actual support supports..........not mid champs that are used as supports like annie, lux and Morg

Bad because people do individual stuff that is harmful to the team to get a good grade.

MrHaZeYo1 votes

It obviously has its pros and cons.

I think the pros outweigh the cons personally.

Being graded allows you to find stuff to improve on more so then not being graded.

VvVVvV1 votes

I would agree %100 if the grades were not skewed.

obtaining certain stats within the normal play and time frame of a game is one thing. But deliberately stalling the game and almost causing the team to lose to the other team making a comeback is another.

i will give you a example of how this hurts the grading system and other players.

Just incase you didnt know, the grading system grades you on how you preform with your champ in your role vs. how others in your region preformed with that champ in that role. Now lets just use ADC and cs for the example. Outside of the LCS and high teir play...the average person does not get over 300 cs a game. Lets say the game was clearly winnable around the 30 min mark and the ADC had 240 cs and wanted to stall so they can farm more.. Staling the game just to get more cs only skews the numbers that other people are graded against that are just worried about winning the game. And the more people hat do this the higher the average that you are graded against will get. So even though cs is not the only factor.......sooner or later people will have to reach LCS levels of cs just to even have a chance when it comes to whatever impact cs has in the formula.

You should honestly play selfishly as you can without hurting your team in a solo environment.

Fighting for that final lvl 7 Vel'Koz token:

50 min game, 14/5/5 400 cs and it gives me an S-

Seriously, this is incredibly frustrating. Do I need to go bot as supp and steal all my adc's cs do get that effing S?! Four hundred farm and the system still want's more.

It feels like the grading favors the "forget winning" style of stealing every cs and kill and running every time you just maybe might kinda-sorta die.

Hell, how are supports expected to get mastery 7 in those conditions. To get S as supp I need to steal around 100 cs and get 5-6 kills, double those assists and up to 2 deaths.

They need to fix that.

If you play Vel bot as support you wont need a ton of cs to get a S.........you will be graded against others that used Vel as support.........just support like a normal support and then get your cs later after lane phase is over. Get your kills when u can....dont go out your way but if you have a chance to kill someone , kill them...dont worry about ks......worry about the win.

I am speaking from experience. I've a lot of Vel'Koz games both as mid and supp. And to get a solid S as supp you need an average of 8/2/15 90 cs. Anything below is S- or A+
