We haven't seen a new Enchanter since Nami. Will we ever?

The Enchanter class is sorely needing both a new addition to the roster and a new, modern direction that makes them as interesting as newer flavors of supports. Currently most old enchanters are very generalized designs and have a heavy amount of overlap with one another as well as tending to have issues with counterplay -- which are also issues that force Riot to keep them from ever leaving their place in bot lane.

As much as I dislike the existing enchanter champions I'd really like to see a new one, both just for a change of pace and because I'd love to see a more "modernized" take.

That's a catcher

Let be real. The classifications needs to be taken with a grain of salt. Like how Sion is a "Tank" and not a Juggy. In reality he skirts that line very close. Nami can "catch" people with her bubbles and R as well but she's an enchanter.

sion isn't a juggernaut at all.

...every champion you just mentioned are enchanters, even the ones you mentioned as "not enchanters".

All "Enchanter" means is that the champion is centered around buffing their allies. Pure enchanters are rare, and most enchanters are hybrid with some other role.

Ivern Enchanter/Catcher

  • Gives allies shields
  • Has a detonation/slow around an ally (which counts as your ally's damage, by the way)
  • Gives allies a dash
  • Gives allies pseudo-stealth

Zilean Enchanter/Control Mage

  • Gives allies XP
  • Has a detonation/stun around an ally
  • Gives allies speed
  • Gives allies a second life

Taric Enchanter/Warden

  • Heals his allies
  • Bonds with an ally for more stats
  • Gives allies shields
  • Stun from an ally's position
  • Teamwide Invulnerability

If I had to guess, I'd say that Riot is currently evaluating the future of enchanters... that's why they nerfed even Nami... so we'll likely see a new one when Riot figures out what enchanters are supposed to be going forward in LoL... and until then, they'll all be nerfed to irrelevance(except Nami who is enough of a generalist that she's almost nerf-proof)

Moody P5 votes

I think the easiest way to address Enchanters - and to me I think it's quite easy - is to design them around very specific synergies and success cases that clearly distinct them from one another.

The upcoming Karma changes are kind of what I'm hoping for, but taken a little farther. Nobody can offer allies CD refreshes and mana battery; that'll be hers and hers alone.

Eleshakai2 votes

We'll see. You could be right, it's even possible that Karma's a 'test run' of a new design.... but we'll have to wait and see.

Illabethe1 votes

At the cost of damage and crowd control, if she uses it.

I do like they are adding another dimension to Karma. But I think I'll still probably lean toward using W offensively than on an ally, because when it's just a duel or farming, R's cooldown is pretty long. It's better to save the uses for something offensive.

Moody P3 votes

If I'm being honest, I don't think Karma rework is going far enough. I'd like to see larger-scope changes to all of her spells than just tweaking numbers on Q and E.

SpecterVonBaren8 votes

They gave Nami a love tap nerf to get the boards off her case because she's the most balanced champion in the game but once all her competitors are nerfed hard enough she becomes the last champ standing and gets perceived as being OP despite there being nothing wrong with her.

Moody P4 votes

nami was pretty OP at the time but she's also easily the least offensive Enchanter and maybe the least offensive support entirely, so I don't mind her being "meta" outside of that usually meaning that all her competition is probably trash

flibitydoo9 votes

yeah she was being really problematic and crowding out champion picks everywhere

I never once saw a rakan, alistar, pyke, morgana or thresh this whole season because of it

Eleshakai1 votes

ya... so very op. Nami was totally the problem. Not that 90% of support champs sucked and thus nami looked strong by comparison.

NaturesMayhem2 votes

This. She was strong, but no more strong that I thought she should be. Sustain was good for a support, had good cc and was able to make her adc a good bit stronger. Her only fault was that all the other supports weren't getting the same love, so she stood out.

Enchanters are still strong though Janna Sona Nami Soraka Lulu The only to really suck is Karma

Eleshakai2 votes

Nami is in an okay spot. Sona's in an okay spot. The rest are super weak right now, mostly because the state of the game doesn't favour them and itemization sucks.

Bârd11 votes

We haven't seen a pure enchanter since Nami. We've had a handful of new enchanters, but they're all hybrids with some other role. Aside from a few reworks of other pure enchanters (Sona, Soraka) there have been no new champions that are pure enchanters.

Bard Catcher primary, Enchanter secondary

  • Has a minor heal
  • Gives moderate mobility to his team
  • Can give allies stasis if the situation calls for it

Ivern Enchanter primary, Catcher secondary (with Daisy being a Warden of sorts)

  • Has a significant, spammable shield
  • Gives his allies notable mobility
  • Gives a form of pseudo-stealth with his bushes

Rakan Diver primary, Enchanter secondary

  • Has a minor heal
  • Has a considerable shield

Hell. depending on how generous you want to be, you could even technically throw TahmKench in there, but I think that's a little bit of a stretch.

Catcher.

IMO he’s an enchanter, I’ve found a lot more success using his CC as follow up rather than engage. While it could be used for engage, rakan’s Dash is too short range to catch most good players off guard. But you’re entitled to your opinion.

rakan’s Dash is too short range to catch most good players off guard.

Watch Worlds and tell me more about good players avoiding his borderline broken engage

But you’re entitled to your opinion.

Yes, you are.

Rıots Bad Client7 votes

Rakan is a mix of engager and healer. So sorta like an Leona and Soraka In no way can Rakan can enchant an ally outside granting them a shield.

Lulu Grants an ally a shield while enchanting their autos with Pixi

Nami Enchants an Ally by movement speed with the auto attack enhancer.

I'd rather Riot buff the existing enchanters atm... Playing Janna, Lulu, Karma, Soraka and Sona feels horrible, with Nami feeling just okay. I don't really understand why they all got hit hard this year (although I took a break in January and just came back last month). I used to have so much fun playing solely Soraka, occasionally rotating between Janna, Lulu, Sona and Nami and now I feel like an idiot most games I pick them because of how overbearing Ignite, Pyke, Thresh, Alistar, etc. are compared to them.

The worst year to be a support main. From Mercy getting hit hard in Overwatch, to Enchanters getting hit hard. Where do I go now to enjoy supporting with such a playstyle. :(

rtbf360834621 votes

2 words: Ardent. Censor.

We had enough of that in Worlds 2017.

Also, Mercy got hard nerfed because it turns out you can’t have high impact and amazing healing while also having amazing safety, not to mention ease of use. That simply doesn’t fly (lol).

Mercy and Ana will never coexist.

Give me a medic from Piltover and I am sold. Piltover doesn't have a real support in the roster anyway.

Illabethe2 votes

Rakan? Rakan's newer..... Soraka's Rework is newer....

Eleshakai7 votes

Rakan isn't an enchanter, really. He's practically a diver. He just also has a shield and a heal, because his kit is borderline overloaded.

Illabethe1 votes

He has the strongest heal in the game for objective taking. Q works off Epic monsters, and it's damn near spammable, aoe heal.

Nami does more damage than a Rakan...

Eleshakai7 votes

Role is based off of what the champion is intended to do. Rakan heals, but he is not intended to stay at the back and heal. He is intended to dive deep, get that cc chain, and then use his shield to escape. (Rakan just happens to have an overloaded kit, so he does everything really well...)

Nami's primary role is to protect by healing and peeling.

Soraka's Rework is newer....

You know Soraka's rework happened over 4 years ago, right?

Illabethe1 votes

Mhmm.... and Nami is 6 years ago.

Wouldn't Taric be a Enchanter With his ult and the ability to extend his abilites onto an ally?

TekkenPlayer2 votes

An enchanter without shielding or heavy reliance on healing or point and click CC would be great

We havent seen a burst mage since lissandra.

Until we got Zoe.

Lissandra is not a burst mage.

Jbels2 votes

Um...BARD?

Velasan2 votes

Well, see Nami is the best enchanter ever created. She can never be topped. So, that's where they stopped making them.

gabetheguy2 votes

God I sure hope not

Skullgetti2 votes

Most enchanters (not mages) are boring, click to play champs. I do not want them to add any more if it'd mean getting more soraka's and Janna's with "haha i pressed a button so i outplayed you". It'd be interesting to see a harder enchanter sometime

Get Ogre Here2 votes

I know a lot of people seem to disagree with this, but Riot considers Rakan an enchanter so I think he's their new enchanter

fruicokt1112 votes

That would take away from them making highly mobile assassins.

buttvirgîn2 votes

I'd like a cute boy enchanter next~ AYAYA ♥

Gilgayu2 votes

There is already a lot of champions for every class and every role...

I think the problem is there are some real old champions that need reworked into more "modern" kits and have their specialty. I mean remember the point-and-click stun of old taric?

The game also posseses a lot of fluency now, and is much better than last season. Top lanes used to be literally two tank autoing each other and see who proc their keystone first, now we have viktor Jungle used to be less impactful until teamfights/mid-late game, but graves and kayn definitely changed that. Mid lanes used to be either assassin or control mage, but now there's Irelia. Bot lane is still the same old bot lane, and you need to change the supports first before changing the adc, (I mean, almost all adc hated the brusier botlane meta.)

the rework for karma might be the start for something big

or season 9 in general is ganna be quite different due to the torret plating and all that.

We need to nerf all enchanters and buff all true damage so it ignores shields and heals.

True Damage that ignores Shields exists it's called Pure Damage.

There's only 2 sources of Pure Damage in the game.

  • The Spawn fountain lasers
  • The self inflicted damage Sion takes during his passive.

Pure Damage is True Damage that also ignores Shields, Invulnerability, death prevention and revive effects.

This kind of damage is not available directly to players.

SpaghettiVase1 votes

Please no more enchanter supports. While I understand their appeal and I use to play a handful of them frequently, they make botlane slow and are a piece of the pie that causes 4-5 man botlane a thing. I would much prefer to see more unique healing/shielding that helps with trading and turning fights (Alistar Rakan)

Sire Hippington1 votes

Rakan is basically a fancy kind of enchanter by now, he's just as squishy and effectively acts as ranged thx to the mobillity and his Q, the only exeption is his strong engage ult.

FCJAAAAGOOOO1 votes

I'm really hoping the next mage will be able to also play as an enchanter.

Or, well...not a burst mage.
