Book of responses to Meddler's design questions about marksmen

Ahristocats··85 votes·4,044 views

Meddler our great league designer/leader/messenger, posted his last gameplay thoughts. And i was a bit surprised to find a lot of interesting questions about marksmen that really deserve our attention.

In this post i'm just going to write my own opinion on them, and maybe things that can be done

  • The arms race between champs who build multiplicative damage and multiplicative defense and how that affects champs building a mixture of both

First, i would like to say that this problem was brought back by a lot of players during tank reworks The thing is due to void staff/last whisper/black cleaver existing in their current form, or liandry/blade of the ruined king, defense will flat out fall off in late game without anything you can do against that. So to make defense viable, you need to snowball and be ahead to get defense faster than enemies can reach penetration this creates a massive feast or famin situation the second problem is that historically since like 3 years, everytime a tank was top tier it was because of one reason: -damage i can't think of one time where this wasn't true every time ANY of them was broken it was because of damage, you would play against them and feel like you die too fast against them that at one point everyone among them got a damage nerf one or multiple time.

Anyone here in this post remember a tank being broken because of a unique utility, or anything that isn't damage because i really can't Malphite used to be broken in season 2 because his E cd was 5 sec and attack speed slow was 3 sec, that this utility was insane and made attack speed reliant champions having troubles Chogath used to be broken because his silence lasted 3 seconds (season 2) But today, since Armor/mr/hp got smacked hard your defense will fall off so you need to snowball quickly to buy defense before they get anti-defense items and to snowball you need damage

https://youtu.be/WlXo-67JYyk?t=2583

example of the amount of armor/mr you could buy before on a non-tank champion like old warwick, this made penetration good but you still tanked a lot (LW removed 35% of your total armor, bringing you if you had 300 armor from 75% damage reduction to ~~62% damage reduction)

  • The need to be able to kill full tank builds late game

That question i have troubles to answer to that honestly From my experience in dota2, there isn't a rule of "this class kills this class" because classes aren't even well defined it's rather "this champ should kill this champ" on even gold/lvl , so a tank would counter a carry/mage well because they have a mechanic that makes them insanely tanky against that kind of carry and vice versa. For instance Bristleback is a tank that has 40% damage reduction if he takes damage from his back But outworld devourer is a ranged carry that converts 8% of his mana into true damage on basic attacks and he steals inteligence on autoattacks, which a stat bristleback needs

I would say league doesn't have enough differences between adcs, a lot of them just rightclick with crit and do not have unique on-hit effects the only one i can think about are Vayne %hp true damage, and KogMaw %hp magic damage, and kog has a problem where his on-hit effect leads him to abuse items making him tankier and harder to kill WHILE having 710 range. You can say Varus's W but it doesn't hold a lot of power budget in his kit compared to everything else he has In Dota most carries do not rely on crit to work, or AD, and they use way more on hit effects that are different and take a LOT of powerbudget, like Lifestealer's 7% current hp steal on attacks Some of them are definied by a single spell that dictates which game they would be strong (Yurnero's Omnislash), we have that in league too (thinking of MissFortune ult)

  • Whether the balance of power between marksmen general damage and marksmen tank busting effects is correct

I don't know what you guys, and what the boards think about that one but i think "general damage marksmen" are better than tank busting marksmen (unless tank busting marksmen become "everyone busting marksmen" due to number issues) Simply because since defense gets outscaled so hard by offense, why would you bother picking tank busting marksmen? any marksman will be able to kill them unless their kit screams YOU CAN'T DPS Jhin , the only reason you would pick them is because their numbers are so high they end up dealing a lot of damage against everyone, so you would rather pick general damage marksmen, and deal so much damage to squishies with boosts+crit, and still be able to deal with tanks.

  • How front loaded marksmen damage can get, later in the game especially (e.g. crit + Shiv crit)

not goanna lie i'm trash at english, i didn't understand that one so i can't answer

  • What stats are needed to make playing a marksmen feel good earlier in the game versus what power's actually needed

https://i.gyazo.com/d25a3bd615c79589960a1b23a32ad475.png

this is such a shame that for some reasons marksmen start with 325 base movement speed, in exchange of broken poke

you cornered them into bot lane with that, and gave them a high base ad (even if it's the lowest base ad in the game, it's still high and allows them in duo lane to poke you into oblivion) that forced anyone but marksmen out of bot lane It's a shame because Jhin for instance would make way more sense mid, he has literally nothing to do bot and if he had 340 base movement speed in exchange of less AD at lvl 1 he would totally work mid lane. The way item 3086 items all give so much movement speed later in the game means to me that you're telling them "hey stay bot you can't go anywhere else unless you have a dash like lucian and then later in the game you can have a high movement speed"

i'm not saying give 340 base ms to every marksmen and reduce their base ad i'm just saying you should do that to marksmen who should be able to go in more lanes than bot like Ezreal Lucian Draven Caitlyn Ashe Jhin because those champions do not scale hard and could use to be good in other lanes in early game since it's part of their power curve to be good in early game (maybe not ashe)

however do not do that to hardscaling adcs like Tristana Twitch KogMaw Jinx or Vayne , because them not being safe in early game should be a weakness in their power curve

  • How much reliable burst mitigation there is available for marksmen, both from supports and from other sources

Braum TahmKench just going to leave them there, ask yourself why they have 100% pick/ban in pro people here on this boards complain about janna having 53% win rate when this is normal because a good/bad janna have hardly any difference, good janna players exist, but a bad janna can just press E+ult and do something good this isn't bad, because there needs to be easy champions in every role to make the life of autofilled players easier But tahm kench and braum are absolutly broken if played by good players, and are picked 24/7 above d1 and in pro Janna can only protect you from melees, she cannot nullify burst in any way (a 300 hp shield won't help you against veigar i assure you, neither will a delayed heal ult) Tahm kench and braum can not only protect you from melees (as good as janna) but also nullify any attempt of burst unless it's instant Tahm kench eats you with W and removes any projectile that is on the way, same for braum And you already know it since Imaqptie mentioned braum and tahm kench like twice in beyondtherift, question is when you're going to fixe them

  • How marksmen power curves compare to other classes and whether marksmen have sufficiently distinct power curves from each other

their power curves are definitly different from each others however it is unacceptable that a hypercarry has a safe early game (tristana which is being fixed in next patch i hope so) and it is unacceptable that a hypercarry achieves late game in mid gamewith 2 or 3 items (IE+2 zeal items) it is acceptable that a hypercarry achieves MID GAME with mid game (makes sense right?) before, i remember adcs doing quite a good amount of damage with 3 items (generally IE+PD+old LW) but they didn't become gods able to kill an entire team in one teamfight

  • Marksmen wave clear late game (and wave clear in general)

I don't know what you expect from them, do you expect them to have bad waveclear?

in the past, (season 2) there were infamous adcs for waveclear: sivir and graves(old Q) in the present, there are no famous adcs for waveclear, they all waveclear with like IE+Shiv, and those who have runaan can waveclear

waveclear became common, one weakness to vayne used to be the lack of wave clear that is no more now If you expect them to not waveclear, you need to take action then

  • Amount of power having decent resourceless ranged damage early game offers (while many champs are still quite mana gated) >

oh it is LOL, thank you for realising that why do you think that right now, the only non-marksmen champ able to go bot are Mordekaiser Yasuo ? if you have mana and you don't have ranged manaleess early game damage there is no way you can go bot

when morde is banned, i'm playing rumble even when he's garbage, because: -i can't play adcs -if i can't play adcs i need something to replace him, but i can only play manaless champions that have ranged spells bot else marksmen poke me out of lane for no mana, and rumble is the only one that has that

this question should be so obvious even Imaqtpie told you that if you take a mage bot, you're going to run out of mana while enemy adc sustain with doran's blade your poke and you don't have sustain yourself which means if you take a bad trade you're done for unlike them

so that will be it after 1 hour of writing!

Regarding the one you didn't know how to respond to, maybe this will help:

"frontloaded" means upfront damage, like how shiv gives you some burst immediately when you first attack somebody.

contrasted with "backloaded" meaning something you have to ramp up to make it stronger later in a fight such as Jax's passive or Darius needing to build up his passive before his ult will do max damage.

It's not really burst vs DPS but really, how early/late in a fight is it strong.

Very very very helpful, i understood now and yes with shiv/rfc/ie adcs are frontloaded

wondering how they can fixe that tho?

imo they should start by removing crit as an RNG mechanic and make it work more like Ashe's passive

Terozu1 votes

Crit slows on hit? Or are you talking Bout her old passive.

Dreamer5297 votes

I think they mean how Ashe's damage ramps up over several autos and can't crit.

Ifneth6 votes

Nitpick: Ashe’s basic attacks and abilities apply Frost, which causes her subsequent basic attacks to deal 10% (+100% (+50%item 3031) Critical Strike Chance) AD bonus physical damage. They can critically strike, applying a triple slow instead of double damage.

After landing four basic attacks on champions, minions, or monsters, Ashe gains Ranger’s Focus, which she can activate to increase the speed and damage of her basic attacks for four seconds.

Khristophoros1 votes

{quoted}

Her passive increases her damage based on her crit stats (if they are under the effect of Frost)

The basic concept is she has a straight up damage increase that isn't random. That's what I'm suggesting.

A very simple solution to making those items backloaded instead of frontloaded is to make them only charge in combat. Right now they can run around and charge up a shiv/rfc proc then burst someone and run away. If those items built stacks while in combat they could have the same damage but would serve as a damage threat and a reason to disengage instead of a burst tool.

Sugar Momma1 votes

That's a good idea, the only problem with it is Shiv is also used for waveclear and it effectively loses that functionality if it only charges in combat.

kile1473 votes

I mean combat with minions could still be combat, and instead of waveclearing with a single auto they would have to use multiple to charge up the shiv and finish the wave off. Hell, they could make it more interactive for waveclear by making it so that any enemy that the lightning kills will cause it to chain once more, meaning that the ADC would be pushed to prepare waves for the shiv proc then clear the whole thing once it goes off with chained minion executions. It would also tone down the overall waveclear potential of ADCs, which I think was one of the other issues that was mentioned on the list.

Ahristocats17 votes

meh i don't really care about downvotes, that's why i kept staying despite being told by 2-3 people that they will downvote me on sight until i leave the boards

i know that riot reads the boards, which is why i made this thread, dudes like maple nectar, repertoir, or meddler read even if they don't comment, and i remember maple nectar commenting one of my thread on what changes could make champions going bot lane, https://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/gameplay-balance/LTMxGH15-being-able-to-build-a-teamcomp-without-marksmen-is-one-of-our-goal?comment=0003000200000001

so... this motivates me to post more.

What, it's a good post lol. If u make a thread saying something like "gut all adcs" or some other bullshit we will downvote... idk about other adcs mains but i am not the angry one here lol.

You're kind of missing a very crucial point about tanks. Although defenses fall off a bit late game, their CC and utility is at an absolute premium. I took a look at win rate by game length for some popular tanks on op.gg comparing their early winrate to their lategame winrate

Alistar winrate falls ~2%

Malphite winrate goes up by 3%

Maokai stays about the same

Chogath rises a whopping 7%

Sejuani stays about the same

Rammus stays about the same

Leona stays about the same

I don't have the patience to go through each one but it's pretty apparent that tanks don't really fall off late

EDIT: I'm using the NA op.gg site just for reference

Ahristocats9 votes

i never said that tanks are trash in late game i said defense is outscaled by offense, which leads tanks in general to have a lot of damage to snowball and buy defense faster than enemies having armor pen which is why when a tank is a problem it's generally the damage that is a problem and the damage gets nerfed

PS: win rate in late game is highly unreliable because since games end generally fast nowdays long duration games sample is really low making the stats unreliable

For me, there should be 3 types of ADCS.

Ranger (attack speed oriented carry): These ranged carries are able to attack continuously and kite effectively but aren't able to burst and their spells are mostly surviabilty and sometimes utilty or dmg. Marksmans that should represent that subclass: Ashe Twitch Kalista Tristana Varus (if you build on hit) KogMaw Jinx Sivir Caitlyn and Vayne. Take note it could only work if we change crit items otherwise they will stay burst per second.

Gunner (burst oriented carry): These ranged carries attack through powerful but slower shots, able to burst anyone in their way at the cost of their mobilty (in some scenarios). They also have utilty or deadly spells at their disposal. Marksman that should represent this subclass: JhinXayah Caitlyn (if she didn't shoot like she held a machine gun) Draven and Kai'sa.

Reaver (Spells>Autos): Carries where most of their damages are on their spells instead of auto attacks. Marksman that should represent this subclass: Corki Varus (if poke build) and Ezreal

Edit: After hearing some feedback, I'll say that a few marksman could fill multiple roles like Kog'maw or Varus.

Twitch can burst.

Xayah is designed to burst.

Caitlyn isn't your definition of a gunner.

Your artillery is confused with Kog'Maw, Jinx, Tristana, and Ashe

Nymzo1 votes

Twitch can burst.

If crit didn't exist, he wouldn't for sure or at least not as fast. Especially since he has two steroids that make him shoot faster or make him shoot farther.

Xayah is designed to burst.

Yeah I messed up on that one.

Caitlyn isn't your definition of a gunner.

If she was like a true sniper (shoot from afar but very slowly and is immobile) she would be.

Your artillery is confused with Kog'Maw, Jinx, Tristana, and Ashe

I added an extra line. Artillery would have very weak autos unlike all of those that you mentionned above.

Elohaven1 votes

Caitlyn is a late-game champion that doesn't attack slow. She's simply immobile and a tower-shredder.

Ashe has weak autos without her enhanced Q. Kog'Maw has weak autos without his spells. Draven has weak autos without his spells. Tristana requires her E and Q to do a majority of her damage.

Nymzo1 votes

I'll repeat myself again: if she was designed as a true sniper, meaning she wouldn't shoot as fast as someone with a gun, she would be. At least she's immobile.

Ashe has weak autos without her enhanced Q. Kog'Maw has weak autos without his spells.

I don't understand why you are quoting those two in particular, especially when I literally said that most of their spells are utility. Take Ashe for example, only q and w are here for the dmg. And no they shouldn't definately not be part of the third subclass.

Draven has weak autos without his spells.

One spell, also that's an exception. And I mentionned they have deadly spells didn't I?

Tristana requires her E and Q to do a majority of her damage.

Sadly you are right, although q is an attack speed steriod so it would be fine in my world. E not so much since it's delayed burst.

Also as I said, this class wold only work if crits were to be changed (since now most of them can burst through crits).

Elohaven2 votes

Crits don't burst you. They're a target agnostic mechanic that deals DPS over time. In no case does an ADC's burst exceed that of an assassin's or mages.

I'll repeat myself again: if she was designed as a true sniper, meaning she wouldn't shoot as fast as someone with a gun, she would be. At least she's immobile.

But she's not designed like that. We're not giving hypotheticals here.

I don't understand why you are quoting those two in particular, especially when I literally said that most of their spells are utility. Take Ashe for example, only q and w are here for the dmg. And no they shouldn't definately not be part of the third subclass.

You marked Vayne, Tristana, Kog'maw, Varus, Twitch, Jinx, and Sivir as primarily utility. Sivir is primarily damage with a movement and AS steroid on her ultimate. Jinx isn't designed for utility at all and her skills signify that with their delays. Kog'maw has no utility other than his E. Varus offers some utility, but the focus is mostly utility by your definition - which he is not.

Since when was Vayne utility?

And I could go on with the rest.

Gunner (burst oriented carry):

Draven doesn't burst. Is his damage high against squishies? Yes - but all squishies do kill each other quite fast. Vayne and Twitch actually cut down Draven faster than he can cut them. Late-game he is outscaled by hypercarries for a reason. He's a lane bully, not a burst champion.

You also confuse Gunner with your Ranger class talking about utility but not clarifying a difference. Jhin would not be burst either. Primarily Vayne is the only ADC designed to truly burst.

You confuse Varus with Ranger/Reaver when Ashe also primarily pokes with spell.

TL;DR - List doesn't make sense. You need to analyze ADCs better and create a smaller set of groups.

Nymzo3 votes

{quoted}

What? Dmg over time? Crits aren't poison or red buff. Crit is literally the reason why Adcs are considered to be an issue, even called better assasins because they burst through crit.

But she's not designed like that. We're not giving hypotheticals here.

As I pointed out we would need to remove crits anyway to make the Ranger class truly Dps.

But fine, here she goes.

You marked Vayne, Tristana, Kog'maw, Varus, Twitch, Jinx, and Sivir as primarily utility. Sivir is primarily damage with a movement and AS steroid on her ultimate. Varus offers some utility, but the focus is mostly utility by your definition - which he is not.

Since when was Vayne utility?

And I could go on with the rest.

Ok so I realized what you mean so I changed a little bit. So I wrote their spells are for their own survive and sometimes utilty or dmg.

However this is not their main idea as they should be known for constant DPS.

Draven doesn't burst. Is his damage high against squishies? Yes - but all squishies do kill each other quite fast. Vayne and Twitch actually cut down Draven faster than he can cut them. Late-game he is outscaled by hypercarries for a reason. He's a lane bully, not a burst champion.

... He does, through crit yes but even without crit he still burst. He doesn't burst as fast as an assassin since he has to waste time catching axes. But he is clearly not suited for a DPS role.

You also confuse Gunner with your Ranger class talking about utility but not clarifying a difference. Jhin would not be burst either. Primarily Vayne is the only ADC designed to truly burst.

To be honest the biggest problem is that all Adcs have spells that do dmg, and some have surviabilty or utilty. The only difference that I noticed is the mobilty of Ranger class but even that is very minor.

Also Jhin isn't DPS by a long shot. His reload mechanic and his high dmg shot prevent him from being on that subclass.

Also Vayne only burst through crit yet again.

You confuse Varus with Ranger/Reaver when Ashe also primarily pokes with spell.

You're right, I added that some could be hybrid.

How is cait immobile when she has a dash?

Corrupt Bliss2 votes

Comparatively, Caitlyn lacks mobility. Her dash is sub-par and very unreliable. With a long wind up, slow cast, and the ability to be cancelled easy, most consider Caitlyn to be immobile.

I still think Crit items need nerfs and item 3036 and item 3033 should have 45% Armor Penetration. Tanks are the only class that takes the 'appropriate' damage from marksman at the moment.

Raiyza5 votes

I've said this in other threads. The biggest problem with marksmen is that there are very little tradeoffs in terms of item stats. For example, Let's take item 3153. Damage + Life Steal + Attack Speed + and active for self peel + health based damage. Why wouldn't you buy this item, even if there's no full tank on their team?

A lot of items need to be reworked. Players should be forced to CHOOSE what kind of play style they want to do. For example if I'm playing Caitlyn. I should have to be thinking: "Do I want more attack speed and rely on DPS or do I want straight damage and get those sweet trap crits/ult damage? Should I get CDR so I can spam my Q? Should I get more life steal since the enemy team has many ways to hit me from a distance?"

Food for thought.

Ahristocats5 votes

ruined king sucks against squishies compared to other marksmen items tho also the cost

Raiyza5 votes

yes, because it is designed to be anti-tank. But nevertheless, the raw stats it gives does not hinder against squishies. It is a fantastic first item no matter the enemy team.

Elohaven3 votes

Nobody who plays ADC buys BORK first-item unless you're Kai'Sa. Even then, Kai'Sa starting crit first is also much more likable once you have mechanically adjusted to her.

Raiyza2 votes

Vayne Ashe Kalista Varus Twitch

Elohaven4 votes

Look at their most common build paths.

Varus builds Rageblade first usually.

Twitch, Vayne, and Ashe doesn't get BORK first item. They go pure crit and this is an event pointed out frequently in the boards

I'll give you Kalista but there's a reason she's F-tier in SoloQ.

RainbowIcee2 votes

There's also item 3139. Apparently Skarner is broken because it forces an ADC to buy a item 3140 that is apparently "too expensive " and builds to a nice AD item that has sustain and an amazing active. I wish bruisers had the luxury of said actives into a tanky item.

Shiv is the core problem of adc, too much burst in a single item that will waveclear an entire lane. I just hate every aspect of this item when I play mid, you try to get cs in mid game too bad your adc will just steal every minion by one hit from this item because adc need to get everything they can get.
