Akali's current situation

Before I move on to everything else, I should probably start by saying a few things first:

1.) I do not think akali will be reverted. This post is meant to give insight to people that didn't main her, because out of all the posts i've seen of people wanting a revert, they never give much reason.

2.) The game used to be a lot different than what it is now.

3.) This is based on mid lane, because old akali was not a top laner for most of her lifespan.

Old akali:

Her early game was bad, and she was one of the weakest champions in mid lane. She got bullied by just about every champion quite hard; a good comparison would be the reworked kayle. Her passive was meant to help this and gave her some healing to survive the poke.

At level 6, you had the chance to outplay the opponent, and many match ups were based on skill. Back then not every champion in the game had assassin level damage, so you could make small burst attacks at them while using your stealth and extra ult charges to get away, then after this, use your passive to heal up a bit for the next trade and wait for your ult stacks to come off cooldown. You couldn't just straight up one shot someone like you can now unless you got really fed, which wasn't an easy thing to do. This is what made her somewhat enjoyable in the laning phase. Once you survived the crappy early game, you could have a chance to outplay and start snowballing.

A typical trade at 6 would be q, ult, auto to prock q, e, w, and then you could ult away to a minion if you were smart with it (old e procked q, but that was removed so i'm going with this version). The counterplay to this is the fact that many champions in the mid lane had a cc ability (ahri, anivia, annie, brand, cho, heim, etc...) and all it took to come out on top of a trade would be a cc ability landed and then some follow up damage. Akali was quite squishy, and almost all of her survivability was her healing, meaning that if you hit her with a combo, she would be very low and either forced to recall or play very safe for the time being.

Her mid to late game was definitely her most fun, but I think many people over exaggerate how strong she actually was. In most games you couldn't just dive in and one shot someone. You could burst them with a lot of damage, but even with gunblade + her whole combo, it wasn't very common for you to straight up one shot someone like a diana or katarina would do now. Her main strength was how slippery she was in a teamfight, using her spell vamp healing, stealth and many dashes to dance around a fight and do small chunks of burst damage to people during the fight. You relied on your movement to survive, and any well placed cc in a fight would completely shut you down because of how squishy you were.

The problem with akali and the reason many people hated her was the fact that much later into the game you could straight up just one shot someone, paired with how slippery she was. It was pretty much a diana diving at you, but akali had her w as an escape (her later iteration had a dash added to it), and extra ult charges that had a reset on champion kill. It wasn't uncommon for a 45 minute game to be ended by one person getting one shotted by an akali with little reaction time because they were mispositioned. The issue now is the fact that this exact same thing happens, but the games are 20-25 minutes instead of 35-45, which makes it a lot less impactful now than it did years ago.

It's hard to compare the old akali to anyone, but the closest is the current kha zix. Kha zix is high risk/reward with him either one shotting and resetting/ulting away, or him getting completely fucked by a well placed cc ability. They are both risk/reward when diving in, but kha zix does less damage and can have troubles killing a squishy if they are not isolated. Akali had more movement in her kit, and much less reliable escapes. A pink ward could completely ruin an akali's day.

New akali:

Her early game is one of the strongest points for her. She can bully many champions with her level 1 power spike. She now has no healing in her kit making her sustain non-existant. In many match ups, you will be able to kill your laner pre 6 with how powerful her kit is early. Her q is very good poke paired with your passive, and your e gives you a very consistant trade with how it gives you a free passive prock, and how it lets you stick to the enemy quite easily. A good trade is e'ing backwards into the enemy with an instant q + w to restore energy and give you movement speed to walk past them for your passive, auto with passive, then another q to prock electrocute. Your w in lane gives you massive amounts of lane priority due to being able to drop minion agro, and the fact that the enemy will have a tough time trading with a champion that is constantly dropping in and out of stealth with poke.

At level 6, you are fairly strong and your ult gives you good kill pressure if you are able to poke the enemy down to allow for an all in. Your ult has a 160 second cooldown, so for nearly 3 minutes, you will need to play safer in lane due to the enemy having an ult advantage. Her q is incredibly strong at pushing minion waves, which allows her to not be pushed under tower very often, and in some cases allows her to quickly shove and roam.

Late game her w gives her a lot of pressure, and this is the main reason people hated versing her. Her combo is decent at assassinating people, but her main strength is her sustain damage, giving her more a much different play style than before. She can use her stealth in a teamfight to force the enemy into poor situations because of how long it lasts, and how fast she is inside. If used properly, she can become one of the most annoying assassins in the game due to how slippery she is, and how much damage she deals. This is a problem though, because not every game is a professional match of 5v5 teamfights, where she can be super impactful, and in many cases, you can trade 1 for 1 and then die, which is not very fun and is very different from old akali.

Conclusion:

Akali completely lost her identity of being a late game hyper carry that needed to outplay her opponents by dancing around fights, and became a somewhat abusive early game champion that has a harder time carrying games. I think if akali were added into the game right now as her old self (no nerfs or buffs) she would be considered somewhat weak. She has a lot of movement to jump on the enemy squishies, but due to the fact that there is so much cc in the game currently, she would be extremely easily countered and shut down. She is a lot like the current katarina, but katarina is more of a one shot assassin that will wipe a team in seconds, whereas akali is more of a single target assassin that uses movement more than full one shots. This is somewhat hard to tell though because of how much power creep there has been since the old days of akali (2015, 2016), and how many new champions and mechanics have been added.

Right now, as previously stated, akali is sort of a cash cow for riot, with new skins being released all the time, constant nerfs/buffs to her to try and push her to a point where they can milk her for money without her being considered toxic to the game. I think an easy way to go about this is keeping her looks (which is what a majority of people like her for), but give her back her old kit. I know this will probably never happen because a lot of people like her kit as it is right now, but I think it should have been given to a completely new champion instead of ripping an existing champion out of the game. Also, nothing comes close to the satisfaction of her old q procking.

You didn't "outplay" your opponents with old level 6 Akali, you just straight up facerolled them. Also, she might have been bullied in midlane pre-6, but her pre-6 in toplane was obnoxious as fuck due to her Q auto spam. She was a super cheesy toplaner.

I liked playing the old Akali, but her design was far from good. While the new one takes a bit more skill, her kit is absolutely overloaded. Having four dashes + instant invisibility at will and perma empowered autos won't ever be healthy.

Do you have some sort of evidence to support your claim? Because just "facerolling" someone was not possible unless you somehow got a few early kills in an invade or something, and even then would be a hard thing to do.

If old akali went top lane right now, I guarantee you that she would be hard fucked by almost every match up. I don't know much of old akali playing top lane in the past because I almost solely played her mid, but I know for a fact that if she were to play top right now, she wouldn't be good.

Examples of champions that would stomp her: Kled, Garen, Urgot, Renekton, Illaoi, Aatrox, Darius, Riven, etc...

The only top laners I can think of that old akali might work against would be tryndamere, nasus, and irelia (maybe fiora, it's hard to tell with that one)

I liked playing the old Akali, but her design was far from good.

The problem is, most champion kits are far from good and not many in the game have "good" kits. I can agree that some kits are toxic to the game like vladimir or ryze, but a champion like akali's kit was nowhere near those levels of toxic.

the new one takes a bit more skill, her kit is absolutely overloaded. Having four dashes + instant invisibility at will and perma empowered autos won't ever be healthy.

Almost every champion in the game can be played fairly well if you understand the game. Champions like Xerath are fairly simple, their kits are quite basic, but it's the execution of the kits that are what differentiate a good player from a bad one. Old akali's kit had a basic combo with no skill shots, meaning to master her combo was not a hard thing to do. The thing that made akali different though was the fact that she was a squishy assassin that if caught out would be dead in seconds. You needed good mechanics and game knowledge to dive around fights, because she almost never just one shot people until the very late stages of the game, where today almost every mage, assassin, etc... can do.

The new kit overall takes less skill, but the initial learning of her is harder because her combos are a little harder to pull off. She is still somewhat the same in the fact that it's hard to one shot someone with her, but new akali is much more based on her shroud than old akali was because of how much larger and impactful the ability is. It's not hard to abuse shroud to q + passive auto some down, and I think the only hard part about her kit is knowing how much damage she can deal.

I miss old akali playstyle, personality. This new akali is a hoe.

I mained akali before her rework. so let's go with your misconception:

  1. akali's q e combo was removed because it had no counterplay, took no minion aggro and was murdering melee match-ups, making akali disgusting.

  2. she wasn't bad in the early game. Actually akali's early game wasn't bad. And because she had this reputation of being bad in lane, you could often get kills pre 6. Generally a reputation from people that didn't main her and played her barely if at all.

  3. she was not a late game carry. Late game was her weakest. Why? Because it's difficult to point and click the right target when 2-3 people are grouped together. Because she was melee and squishy. Even with her invisibility she would easily die to aoe and a pick/red ward would have counter her in is defense.

  4. you could only one shot if you were very far ahead. Her burst was one of the slowest from all assassins. Which is why she had 3 gap closers with resets. Since her targets had opportunities to escape/fight back. But when far ahead you could indeed oneshoot with qr auto. Or rq auto. As far ahead as a zed that will now one shot you with weq auto.

  5. akali was mainly hated because her power spike at 1-3 items was major. I could easily and constantly 1v2 adc and support after I got gunblade, even under their tower. Unless they were feed.

  6. I wouldn't mind an akali revert but she wasn't as bad as most of you are implying.

Edit and ps: Her top lane was strong due to her q auto trades with passive being very strong VS melee characters. I started maining akali since her tank build (top lane tank akali). Where she could 1v2 while being tanky. And continued to main her (ap build after tank build was nerfed) till rework.

She was bad. Only in very specific match ups could you have good lane pressence early game. Against almost every ranged match up you just got straight fucked, because she had no gap closer until 6 and her only ranged attack was her q. Her w gave some opportunities to poke early on with a few random q + autos, but it wasn't uncommon to be forced to use your q's to farm.

This was only true because supports were almost completely useless. It's hard to say how it would be now, but as I said near the end, thing would be a lot different because of how much the game has changed.

Serika Zero1 votes

yes, because Ardent Janna or Lulu back then were "useless".

Also, hmm sure. That's why every couple of months people came bitching to the forums to have akali removed as they got destroyed in lane by her. That's why this happened. Because you people kept spreading "oh, she is shit in lane".

Like fuck no. Sure she wasn't Phanteon, Renekton or Darius. But she was stronger than the other half of the cast. She wasn't nr1 primary lane bully, but if you weren't careful you would die and she would snowball. But sure, go ahead and deny it. Nothing I can do about it, but seriously, this nostalgia you are all feeling is kind of bad for your health.

I was okay with the old akali, mainly due to the fact that you can put a pink ward down to see her and than they took that away but it was still okay becuz her shroud wasnt as big as it is now. For the most part about akali that i dont like is how you cant really out play her with her smoke up. You just have to run away or move away from her smoke but than it just becomes a game of patients. Idk, i never like the new akali but not for the reasons that people play her would

Honestly I didn't much like the fact that her counterplay was a pink ward, because it was super frustrating while playing her to just have an entire ability become useless because someone spent 75 gold to counter it. Playing against these types of champions that were countered by a pink ward was never that fun either, because it forced you to hold a pink in your inventory, which late game was a very hard thing to do.

I completely agree with you so it was good for riot to change that. Same thing with Zed ulti with QSS. I dont know how i feel about morde ult with qss. I personally like that so i hope they dont change that cuz morde ulti is little bit op.

Old akali was a meme. New akali is an actual champion but she is hard to play, as shown by her 45% winrate in plat+

Rework her and make her not a balance nightmare. Also why do people want old Akali back? She was worse when it came to balancing and she was never played because she was trash unless she was fed.

Imo old Akali was kind of boring. She was my first main when I started playing league. Old Akali always struck me as the basic female ninja character. Her gameplay and visuals were very basic and her gameplay was very linear (go in, do your combo and either kill them or die) it was sort of stat checky.

New Akali isn't that bad; her gameplay is much more intuitive than before. She has a much more interesting niche of an assassin that requires you to go in and out. I honestly wouldn't like a revert, I wouldn't mind it but I think Riot should focus on keeping this version of Akali and balancing her.

So we're pretending kha has problems killing someone without isolation now? Lmao.
