Riot's reason for not implementing a Sandbox mode

I just read their reasoning and it seems embarassingly stupid.

It boils down to "we don't want players to expect other players to have skills that would best be developed in a sandbox mode" Except those expectations ALREADY EXIST.

Players expect players to know which walls they can dash and flash over Players expect players to know where to put wards so they illuminate a bush Players expect players to know which items, masteries, and runes to use in order to maximize their damage and survivability in a given situation Players expect players to know the shapes of the hitboxes of their champion and all their champion's abilities And most of all, players expect players to last hit properly in all situations including under turret

Every single one of those skills is better learned in a sandbox mode where you can set up the situations. Players get mad because other players haven't learned these skills and the only way they can learn the skills is to go into games where they encounter players who get mad at them for not knowing these skills. And in a game they might run into learning opportunities for these skills only a handful of times, and then have to sit through 20 minutes of gameplay completely unrelated to these skills while they forget that brief 30 seconds of learning. They want to learn these skills but have no opportunity to.

Even bot games have some toxicity over lane picks because people go in there to practice cs'ing and people fight over having a solo lane to properly practice in. If you don't want the game to have skills that would benefit from practicing in a training mode then you should start making a different game because this one has ward hopping and minion cs'ing and wall flashing so it's been game over on that design goal for YEARS.

If Riot wasn't planning on adding sandbox mode because of technical issues like what has delayed replays or because they thought custom games already had enough features then I could understand, but thinking that training mode would be bad for the game actually makes me angry.

I hope some clever hacker finds a way to make a debug mode in this game to force Riot to make the right choice just like how curse voice forced them to implement buff timers.

Players expect players to know which walls they can dash and flash over

That can be practiced in a custom game.

Players expect players to know where to put wards so they illuminate a bush

That can also be practiced in a custom game.

Players expect players to know which items, masteries, and runes to use in order to maximize their damage and survivability in a given situation

That can be learned through asking friends or reading the boards.

Players expect players to know the shapes of the hitboxes of their champion and all their champion's abilities

That can be practiced in a custom game.

And most of all, players expect players to last hit properly in all situations including under turret

That can also be practiced in a custom game and it is recommended to do so before taking ranked seriously.

Literally people can practice anything they need in a practice game and more often than not they can practice multiple things at once in a practice game/custom game. When i first started out in Beta i had very little idea what to do and i thought you could ignore enemies and go straight for towers (because i was fresh to Moba's at the time) and obviously it didnt go well.

I spent Hours in a custom games with friends asking how to play and learning everything i could and all my hard work ended in me being in High plat for all of season 2/3 (I think it was 2/3 could have been 4.) I stopped taking the game as seriously and took a break and my skills dropped significantly down to low gold level until i went back in and practiced in some custom games to correct my weaknesses and now i am working my way back up to high plat.

All it takes is a little patience and effort and people CAN get better and CAN understand what works and what doesn't. Honestly even if you don't understand something asking on the boards will get you the answer.

Would Sandbox mode be cool? Sure.

Is it absolutely needed so people can get better? No.

of course it isn't needed but it would be a huge boon.

All those things can be practiced with current tools, but it would be easier with a proper sandbox mode. Especially item choices which I think you drastically underestimate players' ability to itemize properly and tell how much they are getting out of items. Many people that have been playing for years still think that flat armor penetration is good when the enemy is building armor, and it is taking a long time for people to realize that ferocity is a better damage mastery for almost any champion that autos during a trade.

You're absolutely right, but I can almost Garen tee you that you won't hear a thing from Riot on this. They never respond to any reasonable requests that would make their game better, and pointedly ignore those posts that accurately criticize them in any way.

well the thing is you allready can practice everything in a customgame but if you want to practice any lategame scenarios or test duels with more items or higher levels, you just have to waste so much fucking time for it. like, a sandbox mode would just make things EASIER
