Unsung Heroes: The Anti-Carry

Hey everyone, I just thought I'd do a write-up on the unsung-role of anti-carry. People play by matchups and lanes, but little do people seem to know about their unappreciated roles, such as the anti-carry. In a teamfight, you take down the frontline and work you way to the backline. Everyone knows this. But people, no matter what ranked, forget their individual roles. You may be a support, but what does your support do? If you are Leona, you are initiator/peeler. Thresh and Blitzcrank are not true initiators, they do not force teamfights the way true initiators such as Malphite and Amumu do, they catch players and hopefully give their team the advantage in numbers when a fight breaks out. They also peel very well. You are a jungler? Sweet. Which jungler are you? You have jobs as a jungler such as ganking, warding, obtaining objectives, etc... but what else? This depends on your pick. Are you Tryndamere, Olaf, or Jax? Then you play the role of anti-carry in teamfights. You don't initiate, and contrary to popular belief you don't carry either. Carrying is your Marksmen's job, they are well protected by their team and through means of sustained damage output melt through the enemy team if left alone. If a teamfight breaks out, nobody says "Protect our Tryndamere! He does the damage!" They protect the carry while the Tryndamere/Jax/Olaf/etc.. charge in. They don't tank, atleast not as well as a true tank such as Malphite Mundo or Alistar. So if they aren't carrying or tanking, just what are they doing? They are destroying that pesky ADC. If the ADC attacks your anti-carry... THEN AWESOME!!! They aren't attacking your other 4 teammates, who should be DOMINATING the other team because your well-protected ADC is melting through them.

Here is an excellent example of the role of anti-cary. I just typed in "Jax Challenger Gameplay" on youtube and viewed this video, its of Dyrus playing Jax and proving my point. The anti-carry for the enemy team is Tryndamere, Jax the anti-carry for his. In most situations, yes, you are correct you should focus the people on the front line. The job of anti-carries however, such as Tryndamere, Jax, and Olaf are meant to charge through the frontline an kill the carry. That is why Jax is given multiple techniques which assist in his ability to do so (700 range leap that can be used both as an escape and as a gap closer, also his dodge technique which is meant to avoid auto-attacks and a stun.) This is why Olaf has a strong slow on a low CD that allows him to stick to the ADC and the ability to break all CC with his ult in his kit. He is relentless in chasing ADCs away from fights and killing them and can charge through the frontline to do so. Tryndamere has a gap closer, a slow to stick to targets (the slow also lower the attack damage of every in range by 80 attack damage. Notice how it doesn't lower AP? He is meant to dive the ADC) and the ability to prevent his death. This means Tryndamere has ATLEAST the duration of his ult to kill your carry, and it will take you ATLEAST the duration of his ult to prevent him from doing so. There a many more examples of anti-carries, but all have 2 things in common: The ability to close gaps, and the ability to stick to targets through means of CC.

I stopped counting at 4 times Jax (played by Dyrus) charged through the enemy frontline to get to the enemy Jinx. My personal favorite moment is at 35:45.

Notice how he jumps into an obviously bad situation? He charged into a Nidalee, Tryndamere, and Jinx (Jinx has Guardian Angel) What do you think he did? He jumped on the Jinx that had Guardian Angel, and despite being focused heavily by Tryndamere and Jinx, he was still able to remove her Guardian Angel before dying. Because of this, his Draven was able to clean up afterwards and land a kill on said Jinx. Speaking of, Tryndamere is obviously a good player, having played well vs a pro like Dyrus and is a Challenger-ranked player, but the difference between him and a pro like Dyrus is that Dyrus knows how to play the role of anti-carry better. Look at the map again. After Jax had taken Jinx's GA and leaped over the wall using a ward, Nidalee and Jinx continued chasing Elise and in doing so gained vision of Draven. What does Tryndamere do? He chases Jax and lands the kill, which did nothing for his team in the end. Had he gone with his team, he would have killed the Draven and possibly secured the kill on the Elise. Instead, Jinx and Nidalee both die because Tryndamere chased a low priority target. If Tryndamere charged Draven throughout the game the way Jax was on top of Jinx that whole game, perhaps Tryndamere's team would have won the game.

well that doesnt realy bring anything new to me this game is called "LEAGUE OF KILL THE ENEMY ADC" after all

a fun fact is how midlane meta shaped up in past time, you know we had loads of assasins sitting there ... so they could kill enemy adc

i think that riot should take the adc's of their high horse and put them on par with other roles, because entire meta is about who can kill or protect the carry better

LifeCyclesTWA1 votes

Actually, assassin's are being sent mid-lane not because they blow up the ADC, but because they tend counter the meta. Champions like Zed and Talon are counterpicks.

Years ago ADCs used to go mid but people started sending AP champs to counter them. AP Champions tend to be stronger early game because they benefit more per level than ADCs, whereas ADCs farm and farm until late game to gain strength because they are so reliant on items. So people started sending ADCs bottom lane and had them protected by a support champ that didn't need the minion kills so they can safely make it to late game.

well whatever works right ... but whatever happens its always the same gameplay pattern ... you chase enemy adc or defend yours

true then there was a kill lane meant to counter that but then riot killed it because they didn't like it

"Carry" comes from DOTA - there are heroes there that can 1v5 - (after getting some items ). Imagine Katarina with black shield from Morgana jumping into your team. Most of the champions that could 1v5 in Lol were nerfed or reworked - Jax, Yi, Yasuo, Xin, Nasus...

Agreed. My whole point was that most melee champions with carry-like damage capabilities are actually not carries in this game, but anti-carries. Every team in this meta is going to have a Marksman that will be lighting it up late-game.

But, melee champions with those carry-like damage capabilities ALWAYS have either CC, a gap closer, or both in addition to a defense mechanism. This helps them wreck the enemy Marksman. Compare the abilities of Marksman to that of what I call Anti-Carries. Marksman, with the exception of perhaps Twisted Fate, do not have reliable hard CC. Many anti-carries do, and if they don' they have gap-closers in addition to a means of removing/reducing the effects of CC.

I do not include Assassins in the anti-carry category, as they do not have the means of handling any sort of damage. Compare Zed and Talon to a true anti-carry such as Tryndamere, Olaf, or Jax. Zed and Talon will always have loads of burst damage and mobility, mobility being their own means of defense. Tryn, Olaf, and Jax all have CC and the ability to reduce damage dealt to them as they bumrush through the enemy frontline.

People play Anti-Carries like carries or tanks, which is totally wrong. If you want to play a carry, play a Marksman. Your team will make sure you stay alive long enough to do same damage. Nobody makes a major effort to protect the Olaf, they just watch him charge in and do work. If you want to play a tank, don't play Olaf or Garen, play someone like Alistar. Anti-carries are meant to charge in, blow up the guy that does more damage then the majority of his team combined, while everyone else protects your guy.

Hey man I just want to say I completely agree with everything you're saying here and this is my preferred play style. Also I was wondering if you think there are any other champions that might fit this role as well? Some of the ones I was thinking might work are Poppy, Jarvan, Hecarim, and maybe even Blitzcrank with some AP could wiz in with overdrive grab, stun punch, and ult combo an ADC and zoom away. Any other champs you think have potential here? Thanks!

Well, people play teams with just 2 main dmg sources - the midlaner and ranged marksmen. Why focus the tanks that deal no dmg? In games under lvl 30 you can see teams with 5 lategame champions - if they pass their weaker start, they destroy the enemy team - this strategy is not good in high level play, because there is not enough gold for everyone - only 3 lanes (+ jungle that not everyone can farm - without smite only few champions can survive - WW, Fiddle, Udyr, Diana, Yi ...) and you will lose inhibitors around 10 min mark from the stronger early game team. Utility champion (supports+tanks) don't need high gold income to be useful for the team. Fighters that you list like anticarries are not useful when behind, unlike someone like Alistar, Maokai etc

I disagree with this.

With the exception of the anti-carry, you should be focusing the person on the enemy frontline. With items such as BotRK that are meant to wreck tanks, shredding through enemy teams is not an issue when you have a well-protected Marksman regardless of whether the enemy is a tank or not.

The anti-carry should wait for team-fight to start, possibly wait for CC to be used (this varies based on champion, FE Olaf), then charge in on enemy Marksman/ADC and kill them. Then you just won the teamfight. I do not agree at all that the role of anti-carry is not useful when behind. It does not take much at all to kill an ADC once you are in their face because they build no defensive items at all until late in the game and have horrible base defensive stats.

I would argue the 2 hardest but most impactful roles in the game are that of the initiator and the anti-carry. A bad initiator will lose a game for you, and a bad anti-carry will lose the game for you. You ever have a team where you just sat there and thought, "Wow, how come everyone focused Malphite? How come no one got Jinx?" Imagine playing an ADC and every time a teamfight started you had a crazy Olaf chasing you down the whole time. You would have trouble having an impact right?

Thank you for knowing that you are supposed to kill the frontline first, contrary to popular belief. Anti-carries/assassins are a very interesting role in that they know that there is high chance they will die, but they have a job to kill the backline first; they are the only person who is going to be doing this in many situations. The ADC, for example, is not going to try to get into position to try and kill the other ADC that is behind a tank and two mages.

I will say that you don't always target the tank. If a squishy and/or threatening target is out of position and in front of the tank, for all good reasons, take them out first.

You are describing the assasins play pattern - fighters can play as assasins or tanks... Real anticarry would be teemo vs autoattackers or the old Kassa/ Talon/LB vs casters.

LifeCyclesTWA1 votes

I understand what you are saying, but hear me out. Pretend a teamfight is about to start. Your 5 members on your team are trying to force a fight at baron, and their 5 come to stop you. First thing that happens is someone initiates the fight, lets say your team does. Everyone then proceeds to attack the player that was initiated upon. The enemy marksmen then enters the battle and starts auto-attacking. As the anti-carry, your job is to stop him from melting your team. In order to get to that carry, you are going to have to run past the other 4 players on his team to get to him.

You listed Teemo/Leblanc/Talon as these types. Teemo does not have the means to charge through the front-line of an enemy team. LeBlanc and Talon do not either, they are amazing at blowing up enemy champions that are out of position and at clean-up duty, but not at charging through a well-organized team. That is why LeBlanc and Talon fall off so hard late game, they do not contribute nearly as much to a teamfight as other champions and lack the ability to split push well like an Udyr, Master Yi, or Jax. They are not anti-carries. However, against a disorganized team in solo queue they have the potential be very powerful even at that phase of the game.

On the other hand, Olaf/Jax/Tryndamere/etc.. have the means to charge through all 4 enemy champions and scare the hell out of the ADC due to their gap-closers, stickiness, and damage reduction abilities and force them to do one of 3 things: 1) immediately begin attacking you, 2) run like hell, or 3) die.

Tanks, fighters forces the opponent to take specific positions or actions. Range carries assassins tries to find out possibilities by this

The role is called ASSASSIN

LifeCyclesTWA1 votes

Its called you don't know how to read. Do not comment on my threads if you have trouble with your ABC's please.

I clearly went over the role of Assassins in the thread and how hard they fall off late-game in relation to true Anti-Carries such as Jax, Tryndamere, and Olaf. Do you honestly believe that a full build Zed would be more disruptive to a team than a full build Jax/Tryndamere/Olaf? If so, you are crazy.
