I'm pretty disappointed in the effort put into Harrowing this year

Danny DeVito··238 votes·6,237 views

No halloween summoners rift, no new game mode, no mention of halloween virtually anywhere on the client.

Yeah, we got doom bots and those deathsworn missions but it didn't really feel as halloween-themed as every other season. We didn't even get a login screen this year.

idk I guess it just feels like it was sort of swept under the rug because of worlds this time around

Edit: I feel like I should touch on the fact that I'm aware 'Harrowing' is something that can happen at any time or whatever the heck but the fact still stands that at least from my perspective very minimal effort was put in here. The skins are nice looking, but they just don't feel as fun as last year's Bewitching Tristana and what have you. I'm just hoping we get better treatment for Christmas.

never forget harrowing 2015 where we got a couple new champion updates, a new champion a new game mode, and assload of pirate skins+Halloween skins and an announcer pack

... i miss the harrowing, i dont think i can comfortable say this year or the year before we had one

Are you really surprised though? The quality of holidays has been deteriorating from Riot for a while now? I asked a friend today, "Remember April Fools Day this year?" She said "No"

I wasn't even surprised

I play every day and I can't remember what they did for April Fools... was there even any?

I just remember how disappointing "Draven Day" was.

I used to look forward to league holiday times a lot and I've kinda just stopped caring because Riot seemed to stop caring too. In the past I remember Pool Party skins coming out like halfway through September, right after summer hype ended and I swear the very same year the Harrowing skins came out AFTER Halloween... and then after that Riot basically made the whole concept of not following the holidays, etc. Since then it just feels off in general.

Unfortunately Harrowing happens in the midst of Worlds every year, it used be my favorite time of year on league but it's just been left in the dust in favor of Worlds,... the skins don't even feel very 'Halloween' anymore. Every year it's just gotten less and less... this is actually the first year Halloween went by and I forgot about the Harrowing completely. Sad.

What about last year's skins? They were extremely Halloween-esque.

Terozu9 votes

They did that "pvp changes everyones names to (their champ)bot and disabled all chat". It was kind of dumb.

Holy fuck I remember now. That was the stupidest thing I've ever seen for an event.

I thought it was pretty hilarious and clever. Sure, the novelty wore off after the first few games, but it was pretty great. We also got some more April Fools skins (Pugmaw, Renektoy, Moocow Ali, and Super Kennen)

Zed genius24 votes

yeah 3 god awful skins and a gamemode that is not even here for the first time.. think riot could do better

yay nibbers2 votes

I actually like the skins except maybe Zed's. They just aren't very Halloween-y.

Xonra2 votes

I wouldn't say god awful skins, but they weren't impressive by any means. Easily the worst "Harrowing" skins ever, but they weren't awful.

Yeah man, I'm not sure if anything will ever beat Harrowing 2012. They released Elise, a metric shit ton of lore, the new Twisted Treeline map, and an absolute ton of skins including Underworld TF and Headless Hecarim which were crazy high quality at the time. Every Halloween I get hyped for even a fraction of that much quality and I'm let down every time haha. Honestly the Death Sworn stuff and in game missions are a step in the right direction at least, they have that same Harrowing vibe even if it didn't capture everything right.

You don't even have to go that back in time, last year we got doombots back for Halloween/Harrowing. We got the ultra high class Teemo skin that fits Harrowing so perfectly along with two bewitching skins. Last year was exciting too, but this year Riot just considered Worlds as priority instead of the holiday. :(

They did say that the harrowing is coming back, but just not during halloween. I think what they want is for players to know that the harrowing is threat ALL year. I hope that this means we get a christmas harrowing or something!

Are you sure? They already put all of the halloween legacy bundles in the store and released the 3 new legacy skins, and enabled doom bots

They said they’re still doing harrowing events, just that it’s not always going to be around Halloween.

This was just an excuse for what they did during the 2015 halloween when they released skins that had nothing to do with halloween at all

I didn't even know that any of that stuff was halloween themed.

You didn't know spectre-like skins were halloween themed?

Show someone who hasn't played the game Deathsworn Katarina and Soul Reaver Draven and tell them to pick the one that's specifically for Halloween.

Basically they chose worlds over the community this time. Just wondering when a community gets tired of crap like this and pushes back actually. Riot's not as bad yet, but a company like EA is long overdue. Just hope Riot changes before they become like them.

Give it 1 or 2 years more. There are already mobas that evolve in quantity and quality as well , which their companies cares about their players in some sort. Riot just changes for the sake of change, and they dont give af about the players. They don't even do holidays ! Because they come from their Runeterra planet or w/e the fuck is it, and there are no holidays , especially not halloween

Blue Moon Wolf9 votes

I blame the Underworld 4.0 skins we call the Deathsworn. back when Underworld Wukong came out they did the Harrowing event and even then it still felt a bit boring. this year they pretty much just made another group of Shadow Isles skins and called it a day. Honestly its just not going feel very fun unless there are some actual Halloween skins.

LordForrest8 votes

Because the Harrowing isn't tied to Halloween anymore? They said it last year and again this year, that the Harrowing is a lore event that can happen at any point of the year.

Thats why we have the Tales of the Rift thing. Started last year with Little Devil teemo and the bewitching skins for Trist and Morg and this year is the Deathsworn.

Also doesn't help that worlds is going on during the normal time for a Halloween event and they don't want to detract from that, sadly.

Akali Prime7 votes

hasn't it been like this for the last 3 years? lol

OnanThaMan6 votes

Last year's wasn't bad, there was clear effort with the return of doom-bots and Satan Teemo. 2015 on the other hand faced more backlash, as the "The harrowing can happen at any time" excuse was thrown at us. Sadly this year it looks like they've successfully swept any potential backlash under the rug.

ntbcool7 votes

i think its just bad timing, this preseason is going to be fucking huge, and it's in the middle of worlds.

Tormentula6 votes

Yea, overall a pretty disappointing year so far.

  • Nothing for April Fools but a little "enemy team is named "bots" gimmick that we caught onto instantly.

  • Nothing for harrowing but legacy skins you wouldn't expect to be harrowing on sight (and one of them already does have a harrowing skin) plus emotes which I personally find overpriced for RP.

  • And I don't expect much for snowdown besides poro king going on rotation, snow rift being re-enabled for 2 weeks with no visual changes, some premade exclusive missions that require a poro icon, and some skins.

Honestly not gonna complain, the devs are focusing 90% on making Runes Reforged the smallest clusterfuck possible and rightly so.

I didn't even realize the Deathsworn skins were for Halloween... They aint sp00ky

I was just talking about this kind of thing with my boyfriend, who just got into League this year around June. I showed him a ton of videos circa 2014 with Hexakill, Harrowing, Kalista and the Harrowing Cinematic that came out that year (if you don't remember, it was the puppet show-themed one explaining the Black Mist), along with explaining the pumpkin carving contests Riot used to hold. I asked him "Looking at all that, now do you see why I'm so disappointed in this year's Harrowing? It doesn't even feel like a Harrowing".

Pretty much feels like they replaced Harrowing with Worlds this year. Halloween is my favorite holiday, but even as a fan of watching Worlds, I feel like they could've done it better. If I recall they always used to push worlds and the end of the season further into November so that there COULD be a Harrowing. Guess this year it just wasn't important.

I'm hoping Snowdown isn't as disappointing.

Pls "My Shop"

RogueWill3 votes

It won't. harrowing happen every year during worlds and that's why it has been getting less attention. There is nothing important on esport happening around that time so snowdown usually gets more effort, similar to Chinese new year which is around February. You should have the shop in either of those

TheWoollyMammoth4 votes

You know, I was hoping for the past few years that they would take their "Harrowing is not halloween" Statement and give us something awesome with it. Specifically, the black mist coming in the middle of snowdown festivities.

I mean, picture Piltover, Feeling safe, joyfull and happy, with all the normal snowdown cheer, when a ship from the bilge comes racing into the harbor, all the sailors screaming bloody murder. While cait and vi make their way over to investigate, a thin mist starts to appear over the city, (everyone thinks its The Grey) nobody pays any attention to the thicker darker mist on the horizon, they go about their business all cheerfull and dressed up. The mist hits Zaun first. Piltover soon after.

**Edit- Im starting to lose faith that this would happen at all. Cause for the last few years, it looks like the "Harrowing is not halloween" thing, was just corporate speak for, (fuck you, it takes to much effort, we ain't doing it. Our lore and skins teams are "busy" working on e-sports.)

SoQuiche4 votes

Yea it seems like Riot wanted to fuck us over this year. Not only did we get shit for Halloween, they also got rid of Pool Party and the PROJECT skins.. like wtf?

Dessem4 votes

They said it was a "Tales from the Rift" thing, but where are these tales? Not even stories? Lore team pls

Xonra4 votes

Riot doesn't care about holidays anymore but Chinese New Years (I mean, it's true). They sort of stated as much a few years back that they weren't really celebrating holidays and so on anymore, yet we still get those Chinese new years skins on time with no delay regardless, and all that jazz.

Is just what happens when you are owned by a company that is based in a country where halloween and such really isn't a thing they care much about at all.
